Our Family of Shops...
1 World, 2 Wheels -by Andrew Wolfe
The
price of gas being as it is, some clever folks are looking toward
two-wheeled alternatives. Scooters are all right, but you can't do
better than bicycles, which burn nothing but calories (I get about 30
miles per pizza slice, or thereabouts). Paul
Keegan got into bicycling in a big way more than 20 years ago, when he
was invited to join the "Bike for Peace," a 1986 ride in the U.S.S.R.,
Soviet bloc nations and the United States. Keegan worked for many years as a mechanic at Goodales, and now owns 1 World Trading Co.on Main Street, where he's dipping back into the bicycle business with a side project, "Re-Cycles Bicycles." read more...

New Product news
Laptop Lunches WHAT'S THE PROBLEM?
As Americans we have come to
depend on the many convenience products that are available to us, and nowhere is
this more evident than in the school lunch room. Most parents pack lunch items
in single-use plastic bags, aluminum foil, or wax paper, or they purchase
single-serving items that come in their own disposable package. Admittedly,
these products are extremely convenient, but what is the environmental cost to a
country that relies so heavily on them? Landfills are full and overflowing.
Incinerators pump contaminants into the air. Communities are battling over who
will accept the nation's trash. We all enjoy these conveniences, but few of us
are willing to allow new landfills and incinerators to be built in our own
backyards. Much of the trash we generate comes from the packaging on the food we
buy, and lunch foods are no exception. In fact, it has been estimated that on
average a school-age child using a disposable lunch generates 67 pounds of waste
per school year. That equates to 18,760 pounds of lunch waste for just one
average-size elementary school. --from http://www.wastefreelunches.org/

Are the bottles insulated?
No, the bottles currently available are single-walled.
Will my water filter fit your bottle?
Our

wide-mouth Nalgene bottles. If your water filter fits on your Nalgene

Will the bottle fit in my cup holder?
It
depends on your cupholder. Below is a table listing the diameter of

Klean Kanteen Grown-ups love the 18 oz bottle for its compact, easy-to-carry,
lightweight size that slips into bags, cup-holders, and even the waterbottle
cage on your bike. But we've nicknamed it the Kid Kanteen because it's designed
for smaller hands, which has made it the top choice of our younger users.
As kids do, they've come up with all kinds of fun names for their
Klean Kanteens. Our favorites include "earth bottle," "world bottle," and "my
good-for-me bottle."
We love the fact that Klean Kanteen kids understand that every
bottle we make is body- and earth-friendly; because every Klean Kanteen is made
from 100% recyclable, high-quality, food grade stainless steel that's toxin and
BPA-free. Your Klean Kanteen doesn't have to have a special lining like some
other metal bottles, and it won't ever leach nasty tastes or chemicals into your
drinks - no matter how many years you use it.
The large-mouth design makes it easy to pour in ice cubes, chunky
veggie soup, or a smoothie packed with frozen strawberries. It's also easy to
clean - just scrub it out with white vinegar and baking soda (or mild soap and
water), or load it in the dishwasher.

We do need more: hip dresses for teens and younger school uniforms (2008/2009 styles only) Abercrombie, American Eagle and such names -current styles only, please :) for the tweens and teens. very up-to-date Maternity clothing very clean high chairs up-to-date and clean pack 'n' plays baby gates toddler beds exersaucers very clean potty seats very clean booster seats (for at the table) very clean step stools
Consignments are accepted: Monday 10 - 6:30 Wednesday 10 - 6:30 Friday 10 - 5:00 Saturday 10 - 6:30 It
is always a good idea to call ahead, before you put the consignment items in your car, to be sure we have room for more of whatever you have to
consign.
Consignors, we ask that you be sure of the following:
1. all items have been freshly and thoroughly cleaned 2. you have not packed more than 30 items 3. you call, on the day you are coming, to confirm that we can take more of what you have to bring. please visit our website to review the consignment policies.
Reminder: We do not take/sell any adult clothing except for maternity clothing.
We take only children's (baby to teen) and maternity clothing. If you
want us to donate a few articles of off-season, or adult clothing for
you, PLEASE PUT THEM IN A SEPARATE BAG AND LABEL THE BAG "FOR DONATION." Can't get here on a Monday, Wednesday, Friday, or Saturday? or Don't want to make a special trip to M&C because of the price of gas?? How about working out a plan with a neighbor or relative in which you take turns bringing in each other's consignments? Just be sure each batch of consignments contains no more than 30 items for the correct season, and each batch is clearly labeled.
As you know, we do not take consignments on Tuesdays or Thursdays. We started this policy 2 years ago, when we found that in the Fall and the Spring, we could not keep up with the work involved in taking consignments every day. We found that we could not get to the bottom of the piles, and some batches of consignments sat in buckets for as much as 2 weeks before we were able to "uncover" them, get them processed and onto the sales floor. Please understand that we get asked to make an exception several times every Tuesday and Thursday, so if we made an exception for everyone who asked, Tuesdays and Thursdays would no longer be the "catch up" days that we need to keep things running smoothly and accurately.
Thank you for your understanding and for helping to make Mother & Child such a successful community resource!! --going on 20 years!!
