Our Family of Shops...
oak

Oak

(short for "one of a kind"), is a bright new boutique off Newbury treet, in Boston, that specializes in handmade goods, and isn't your grandma's - or even your big sister's - crafts fair.
My daughter, Keara (yes, she is almost 21 years old, now!)
who grew up at Mother & Child, and whose entrepreneurial spirit sprang into high gear with this venture, sells the work of designers so unbelievably talented, you'll do a double take when you discover they're handmade.

Under the Nile ...
The '13 Villages Project'

A note from Under the Nile: fruit basket

We are proud to be part of a project contributing to the development of independent and self sustained communities.

The '13 Villages Project' is a campaign co-conducted by Under the Nile and its Farm in Egypt (Sekem). It takes place in 13 rural villages in Sharkeya, Egypt. Through vocational training and infrastructural development, the project is improving the health, skills and overall well being of the village inhabitants. We provide excellent health care as well as education on dental and over all physical health. We begin by educating the villagers on how to make our fruit and vegetable toys. Each village receives an advance for their work and the materials needed to produce that toy. Upon completion, we pick up the finished goods and pay them fair wages for their work.

13 villages

We are very excited to see the end result. Happy, educated, and healthy human beings.

Consignor News

Can't get here on a Monday, Wednesday, Friday, or Saturday? or
Don't want to make a special trip to M&C because of the price of gas??
How about working out a plan with a neighbor or relative in which you take turns bringing in each other's consignments?
Just be sure each batch of consignments contains no more than 30 items for the correct season, and each batch is clearly labeled.

As you know, we do not take consignments on Tuesdays or Thursdays.  We started this policy almost 2 years ago, when we found that in the Fall and the Spring, we could not keep up with the work involved in taking consignments every day.  We found that we could not get to the bottom of the piles, and some batches of consignments sat in buckets for as much as 2 weeks before we were able to "uncover" them, get them processed and onto the sales floor.  Please understand that we get asked to make an exception several times every Tuesday and Thursday, so if we made an exception for everyone who asked, Tuesdays and Thursdays would no longer be the "catch up" days that we need to keep things running smoothly and accurately.

Consignors, we ask that you be sure of the following:

1. all items have been freshly and thoroughly cleaned
2. you have not packed more than 30 items
3. you call, on the day you are coming, to confirm that we can take more of what you have to bring.
please visit our website to review the consignment policies.

Reminder: We do not take/sell any adult clothing except for maternity clothing.  We take only children's (baby to teen) and maternity clothing.  If you want us to donate a few articles of off-season, or adult clothing for you, PLEASE PUT THEM IN A SEPARATE BAG AND LABEL THE BAG "FOR DONATION."

In July, we accept "back-to-school clothing.'  Back-to-school is actually warm-weather clothing that is nice enough to wear to school, (eg:  polo shorts, oxford shirts, khakis, skirts and capris, ie: what the children wear in September.)    Acceptable shorts will be longer, better brands and in like-brand-new condition.

We do need more:
dresses for teens
very up-to-date, Summer Maternity clothing
very clean high chairs
up-to-date and clean pack 'n' plays
bed rails
baby gates
toddler beds
exersaucers
very clean potty seats
very clean booster seats (for at the table)
very clean step stools

It is always a good idea to call ahead, whenever you are bringing consignments, to be sure we have room for more of whatever you have to consign.
