Our Family of Shops...
oak

Oak

(short for "one of a kind"), is a bright new boutique off Newbury treet, in Boston, that specializes in handmade goods, and isn't your grandma's - or even your big sister's - crafts fair.
My daughter, Keara (yes, she is almost 21 years old, now!)
who grew up at Mother & Child, and whose entrepreneurial spirit sprang into high gear with this venture, sells the work of designers so unbelievably talented, you'll do a double take when you discover they're handmade.

handmade by local parents
Not only have these items not traveled from accross the country, or overseas, they usually get delivered when the artisan happens to be shopping at Mother & Child or running an errand nearby. When you but a locally-made product you are supporting an artisan that lives in your community, buying a product with a low carbon footprint, AND.... gettting a one-of-a-kind item!  These are not only baby items.  We have  hair clips, belts, handbages and more.

Consignor News

Can't get here on a Monday, Wednesday, Friday, or Saturday? or
Don't want to make a special trip to M&C because of the price of gas??
How about working out a plan with a neighbor or relative in which you take turns bringing in each other's consignments?
Just be sure each batch of consignments contains no more than 30 items for the correct season, and each batch is clearly labeled.

As you know, we do not take consignments on Tuesdays or Thursdays.  We started this policy almost 2 years ago, when we found that in the Fall and the Spring, we could not keep up with the work involved in taking consignments every day.  We found that we could not get to the bottom of the piles, and some batches of consignments sat in buckets for as much as 2 weeks before we were able to "uncover" them, get them processed and onto the sales floor.  Please understand that we get asked to make an exception several times every Tuesday and Thursday, so if we made an exception for everyone who asked, Tuesdays and Thursdays would no longer be the "catch up" days that we need to keep things running smoothly and accurately.

Consignors, we ask that you be sure of the following:

1. all items have been freshly and thoroughly cleaned
2. you have not packed more than 30 items
3. you call, on the day you are coming, to confirm that we can take more of what you have to bring.
please visit our website to review the consignment policies.

Reminder: We do not take/sell any adult clothing except for maternity clothing.  We take only children's (baby to teen) and maternity clothing.  If you want us to donate a few articles of off-season, or adult clothing for you, PLEASE PUT THEM IN A SEPARATE BAG AND LABEL THE BAG "FOR DONATION."

In June we do not accept much clothing.   What we do take must be very Summery(for beach, pool...)  Please call just before you bring consignemnts to be sure that we are able to take the sizes and items that you have to bring.  In July, we accept "back-to-school clothing.'  Back-to-school is actually warm-weather clothing that is nice enough to wear to school, (eg:  polo shorts, oxford shirts, khakis, skirts and capris, ie: what the children wear in September.)    Acceptable shorts will be longer, better brands and in like-brand-new condition.

We do need more:
Summery, very up-to-date, mall-brand shorts and dresses for teens
very up-to-date, Summer Maternity clothing
very clean high chairs
up-to-date and clean pack 'n' plays
bed rails
baby gates
wagons
tricycles
outdoor ride-on toys
toddler beds
exersaucers
very clean potty seats
very clean booster seats (for at the table)
very clean step stools

It is always a good idea to call ahead, whenever you are bringing consignments, to be sure we have room for more of whatever you have to consign.

Amherst  Plaza (repeated for those who did not see last week's e-mail message)

Our thoughts and prayers are with our previous neighbors in Amherst Plaza.   We are glad that no one was hurt and hope that the challenge of re-building their businesses will go as smoothly as it possibly can.

It occurs to me that this event may cause our customers to question  what safeguards we have in place regarding our computer system, and your consignment accounts.
We do a daily back-up of all transactions and inventory on two external back-up drives.  One back-up drive is always stored in a fire-proof safe.
Yes, we do have sprinklers throughout the store, and we do get our fire extinguishers inspected as reccomended.

Re-use is an important part of "reduce...re-use...recycyle"

Did you know that whenever you spend over $100 at Mother & Child, you may have a free organic cotton, grocery-sized tote bag??  You will love this bag so much that you may want to purchase a  few more at the incredibly low price of only $5.99 each!  ;)

At Mother & Child, we will re-use your surplus grocery and shopping bags.   If you have too many plastic or paper grocery bags or shopping bags at home, you can bring some to us.  :)
