Season of Sharing    The Patterson Foundation Creates Season of Sharing Endowment to Honor Herald-Tribune Publisher McFarlin
The Patterson Foundation has established an endowment fund to support Season of Sharing, an annual campaign that provides emergency assistance to individuals and families on the brink of homelessness. The foundation will match contributions dollar for dollar up to $250,000, and then invest the money to provide long-term stability and annual funds to Season of Sharing. The fund will be named in honor of Diane McFarlin, publisher and president of the Herald-Tribune, who started the campaign in partnership with the Community Foundation of Sarasota County.
       
3-D Project    Southwest Florida Community Foundation Launches 3-D Project to Strengthen Regional Nonprofits' Capacity
The Southwest Florida Community Foundation has launched the 3-D project (which stands for data, dialogue and decisions) to address the needs of the five-county region to help and enhance local nonprofits. The project will establish a collaborative network and platform that will allow the region to create efficiencies, share resources, openly communicate and make informed decisions to strengthen local nonprofits.
   
> ArtPlace Grants Mean Business in Miami
Miami received three of 47 creative placemaking grants from ArtPlace, a national initiative supported by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and 10 other foundations. The aim of ArtPlace is to drive community revitalization by putting arts at the center of economic development. Miami recipients of the recent ArtPlace funding were The Wynwood Arts District Association, The Light Box at Goldman Warehouse and the Bass Museum of Art.
    
> Jessie Ball duPont Fund Helps Edward Waters College Re-Launch Summer School
Edward Waters College was able to re-launch its summer school program this year thanks in large measure to a $200,000 grant from the Jessie Ball duPont Fund. The program, which was suspended in recent years, expects to have 175 students in 47 courses.
   
> Gulf Coast Community Foundation Helps Children First Expand Head Start Services
Children First has received a $100,000 grant from The Venice Endowment Fund of the Gulf Coast Community Foundation to expand its Head Start services for families in the Venice area. The funding will be used to renovate and furnish a newly leased building in Venice, where Children First plans to expand from two to five classrooms plus space for staff. The agency expects to move as many as 33 children from its waiting list into its programs through the grant.
    
> The Miami Foundation Supports 62 Local Nonprofits
The Miami Foundation awarded $1 million in grants to 62 nonprofits to support their efforts to improve Miami. Five groups received the largest grant of $25,000: Ronald McDonald House Charities of South Florida, Single Stop USA, National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts, Kristi House and uAspire.

Focus On: Health Funding
   
ASAP    Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida Foundation Helps Fight Childhood Obesity in Miami-Dade Schools
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida Foundation and ChildObesity180's Active Schools Acceleration Project announced 11 winners of a nationwide innovation contest, including Miami-Dade County Public Schools. The competition aims to identify and reward the most creative, impactful and scalable school-based programs and technologies to promote children's physical activity. The district's "Fit-tech Programs" incorporate technology into elementary physical education where no gym exists by bringing fitness into the classroom via "exergaming," gaming bikes and other equipment.
 
> Health Foundation of South Florida Supports Preventive Health in Broward, Miami-Dade
The Health Foundation of South Florida supported several preventive health efforts as part of the $1,282,700 in grants it awarded in June to 18 health-related nonprofits in Broward and Miami-Dade counties. Among the grants were $50,000 to the Jessie Trice Community Health Centers to conduct hypertension screening and provide education in underserved neighborhoods in Miami-Dade; and $40,000 to the Women's Breast Health Initiative, Florida Affiliate for door-to-door outreach in underserved neighborhoods and free mammograms to eligible women.
   
> Winter Park Health Foundation Supports Innovative Brain Health Initiative
The Winter Park Health Foundation approved a two-year, $185,000 grant to the Alzheimer's Association to support the launch of an initiative designed to educate Central Floridians of all ages that it is never too early or late to protect their brains.

Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund    Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund Named Corporate Conservationist of the Year
Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund was named Corporate Conservationist of the Year by the Florida Wildlife Federation. DWCF has provided nearly $4 million to support 257 programs and 59 organizations in Florida.
     
9.5 Minutes    Community Foundation of Broward Honored for Public Service Communications
The Community Foundation of Broward's publication "9 1/2 Minutes - HIV/AIDS Community Update 1989-2011" has received an APEX 2012 Award for Publication Excellence in the public service communications category. The publication details 22 years of the community foundation's work against HIV/AIDS, and promising approaches to combat the disease in the future.

> Waymon Armstrong, president of Engineering & Computer Simulations, and Paula Shives, community leader, were appointed to the board of directors of the Community Foundation of Central Florida.
   
> Janis Fawn has been elected to Gulf Coast Community Foundation's board of directors. The board also elected Lisa Carlton and Jay McHargue to a second term, and elected Tommy Taylor as chair and Jay McHargue as vice chair for the 2013 fiscal year.
   
> Martin Proctor, co-owner of the Proctor Dealerships in Tallahassee and vice president of Compass Marketing & Consulting, Inc., has been elected to the board of directors of the Community Foundation of North Florida. Giving USA 2012   Giving USA 2012 Indicates Long, Slow, Uphill Slog...If We Are Lucky
If there is one takeaway for most nonprofits from this year's Giving USA Report, it is that many nonprofits will be acutely feeling the effects of the recession for many years to come. This is unhappy news for many groups who may already feel that they have had to cut into their musculature to survive.

> Community Foundation of Broward: Re-Engage for Good: City Challenge
The Community Foundation of Broward will award 10 municipalities a $5,000 planning grant each to design sustainable ways that will connect retired baby boomers with opportunities to provide their services and experience to tackle key city issues. Approved plans will receive up to $30,000 to implement their strategy. Planning proposal deadline: Aug. 10.
   
> The Miami Foundation: GLBT Community Projects Fund
The Miami Foundation is accepting proposals for its grant program that supports organizations and programs that advance education and public awareness of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender issues in Greater Miami. Deadline: July 31.
   
> Quantum Foundation: Quantum in the Community Initiative
The Quantum Foundation welcomes proposals for its initiative to provide funding to small nonprofit organizations (less than $500,000 annual budget) in Palm Beach County focused on providing basic needs such as food, shelter, clothing, transportation, emergency financial assistance (for utilities, rent, etc.) and other necessities that impact the health and well-being of individuals, families and communities. Deadline: Aug. 24.
