21-22 for visits with Florida's
full 27-member congressional delegation and their
staffs, as part of the annual Foundations on the Hill
event. At a time when more people than ever are
struggling to make ends meet in Florida during these
difficult economic times, we hit the Hill to stress to
our legislative leaders the important role that
philanthropy can play to help our state recover and
thrive. |

Jessie Ball duPont Fund Supports New Partnership to Create Summer Jobs for Low-Income Teens in Jacksonville
Up to 100 low-income teens in Jacksonville will have paying jobs this summer thanks to a new collaboration of local nonprofit organizations and for-profit businesses. The collaborative, called the Jacksonville Summer Youth Job Preparation and Employment Program, will be funded by a $240,000 grant from the Jessie Ball duPont Fund, which will support training, job stipends and transportation costs. The program provides a triad of supports - pre-employment training,
on-the-job coaching and outside-the-job monitoring - for youth as they experience the world of work for the first time. |

Mosaic Contributes to the Florida Wildlife Corridor Expedition
The Mosaic Company is supporting the "Florida Wildlife Corridor Expedition: 1,000 Miles in 100 Days" project,
where four environmental advocates are traveling 1,000 miles on foot, on horseback and in kayaks to raise awareness about the need to create a viable wildlife corridor from the Everglades to Georgia. Mosaic is sponsoring update reports airing on WUSF stations, and is the exclusive sponsor of a PBS documentary
about the project.
The expedition kicked off on Jan. 17 in Everglades
National Park and will end at Okefenokee Wildlife Refuge on Earth Day, April 23. |

Giving Challenge Raises $2.4 Million in 36 Hours for Southwest Florida Nonprofits
The 36-Hour Giving Challenge - a first-of-its-kind online fundraising event in Southwest Florida made possible by
the Community Foundation of Sarasota County, Gulf Coast Community Foundation, Manatee Community Foundation and The Patterson Foundation - raised
$2,401,601 on March 27-28. The challenge generated
10,705 donations to support 109 area charities enrolled in The Giving Partner program. The foundations pledged $501,000 in matching dollars
and special grant prizes. The one-to-one match, up to $1,000 per donor per organization, was met in the first four minutes of the challenge. |

New Boys & Girls Club in Cocoa Gets Big Boost From Disney Cruise Line
Disney Cruise Line presented $250,000 to Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Florida in honor of the newest and fourth ship in its fleet, the Disney Fantasy.
The donation will help fund a new Boys & Girls Club location in Cocoa near Port Canaveral, the homeport for the Disney Fantasy. |

Students Honored With #FreeToTweet Scholarships to Celebrate the First Amendment
For sharing online how they enjoy exercising their First
Amendment rights, 22 students from coast to coast will
each receive $5,000 scholarships to continue their high
school or college education, funded by the John S. and
James L. Knight Foundation and coordinated by the First
Amendment Center and the American Society of News
Editors. Their entries were judged the best from a
cascade of more than 17,000 tweets and messages sent as
part of "Free to Tweet" on Dec. 15, 2011, the 220th
anniversary of the ratification of the Bill of Rights. |

Community Foundation of Broward Promotes Increased Sense of Community Through Arts
The Community Foundation of Broward has announced the first grants from its $2.5 million Art of Community Initiative. Three organizations - Coral Springs Museum of Art, H.O.M.E.S. Inc., and Palms Community Action Coalition - will share
$157,000 to support three unique projects to bring residents closer together through common efforts to address issues of public concern through arts. |

Martin County Schools Will Expand Arts Integration in Classrooms With Community Foundation Grant
The Education Foundation of Martin County received a $76,600 grant from the Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties to support its S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics) initiative. The grant will be used to expand arts integration opportunities for students as well as the education foundation's Engineers Teaching Algebra program, professional development for educators,
and project-based learning programs to increase student awareness of S.T.E.A.M. careers and student achievement in these areas. |

Cesar Alvarez, Paul Grogan and John Rogers Jr. stepped down in March as trustees
of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation,
which honored their legacy of service by awarding $50,000 each to three nonprofits recommended by each of the retiring trustees. Alvarez, executive chairman of international law firm Greenberg Traurig, proposed support for El Memorial Cubano, a monument dedicated to victims of the Castro regime. Grogan, president of The Boston Foundation, asked Knight to create a donor-advised
"Opportunity Fund" to build the capacity of nonprofits that focus on producing upward mobility for low-income minority youth in Boston. Rogers, chairman and CEO of Ariel Capital Management, asked Knight to make a donation
in his name to the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools, a private day school on Chicago's South Side known for its experience-based curriculum.

Foundation Funding for Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene
In recent years, the number of U.S. charitable foundations awarding grants for water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) projects around the world has more than tripled,
according to a new research brief by the Foundation Center.
The report finds that between 2003 and 2010, this growth in the number of active funders
was accompanied by a nearly five-fold increase in the number of organizations receiving these grants, to the tune of $144 million in 2009-2010.

Connect Detroit: Lessons From One City's Efforts to Bridge the Digital Divide
Three years ago, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation set out to find ways to bridge the digital divide in Detroit, where less than 40% of households have broadband access.
It approached the challenge by focusing on three high-poverty neighborhoods, and set out to fund a broadband network there in addition to digital literacy training.
The lessons learned from the foundation's efforts are
detailed in a new report, which looks at what works and what doesn't
for communities trying to digitally connect the 100
million Americans without home broadband access. |

Bank of America Charitable Foundation: Housing Grants
The Bank of America Charitable Foundation invites nonprofit organizations throughout the United States to submit funding proposals for programs that address the nation's ongoing housing challenges. The company will invest $15 million to support impactful local and national programs and services addressing housing issues,
including foreclosure counseling and mitigation, neighborhood stabilization and affordable housing.
Grant application deadline: April 30. |

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida Foundation: IMPACT Grants
The Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida (BCBSF) Foundation announced that it will open its Improving Access to Health Care (IMPACT) grant cycle on April 30 using a new,
highly efficient two-step process and expanded focus that will make applications more user-friendly. The IMPACT program seeks to increase access to quality, health-related services for Floridians, especially those who are uninsured and/or underserved. On April 30, applicants can access the online application system and submit a letter of inquiry, the first step of the new application process.
Deadline to submit a letter of inquiry: May 28. |

The Community Foundation in Jacksonville/Chartrand Foundation: Jacksonville Conversations for Education
The Community Foundation will be offering grants of up to $15,000 through
funds provided by The Chartrand Foundation to help nonprofit organizations better understand various forms of advocacy and the issues that affect educational outcomes; be better prepared to share that knowledge with others; and develop
actionable plans that result in more positive educational outcomes for students in Duval County. Letter of
intent deadline: April 20. |
