Medicaid Reform   Foundations Help in Understanding the Significant Changes Looming for Florida Medicaid in 2012
Two new briefing papers by the Health Policy Institute at Georgetown University shed light on the dramatic changes that could be coming to Florida's Medicaid program in 2012. The Jessie Ball duPont Fund, in partnership with the Winter Park Health Foundation, commissioned researchers to analyze the various proposals for change, the approvals needed and the potential impact on beneficiaries.
       
Gulf Coast Community Foundation   Gulf Coast Grants Target Social-Service Delivery
Gulf Coast Community Foundation approved several grants in December aimed at strengthening social-service delivery in the region, a critical priority identified by the Gulf Coast board for the foundation's grantmaking this past year. In the last three years, Gulf Coast has granted more than $11 million to meet the community's most pressing health and human service needs.
   
> Disney's Support of Covenant House Helps Youth Build Solid Foundation
Walt Disney World Resort provided cash and in-kind support to the Covenant House Florida, which focuses on helping runaway, homeless and at-risk youth - including teen parents and their babies.
    
> Indian River Community Foundation Receives $100,000 Gift for Unrestricted Grants
The Indian River Community Foundation's unrestricted grants program received a substantial boost with a gift of $100,000 from a local philanthropic couple who have been the lead givers to the fund for the past three years.
   
> JPMorgan Chase Helps Low-Income Residents Achieve Long-Term Economic Stability
Hispanic Unity of Florida received a $75,000 grant from JPMorgan Chase to support the Center for Working Families, which aims to help low-income residents achieve long-term economic stability. The grant will help the center serve 120 clients, who can get help in launching entrepreneurial ventures, employment training or other needed assistance.
    
> Jaguars Foundation Tops $1 Million in Giving in 2011, $15 Million Since 1995
In its final 2011 grant cycle, the Jaguars Foundation awarded $293,000 to 10 local nonprofits serving economically and socially disadvantaged children and families in Northeast Florida. The grants bring the total for the year to almost $1.1 million. Since 1995, under the leadership of Jaguars owners Delores Barr and Wayne Weaver, the foundation has awarded nearly $15 million for youth-serving programs in the Jacksonville area.
    
> Power2give.org Launches in Miami
On Dec. 14, the Miami Dade-County Department of Cultural Affairs, the Arts & Science Council and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation introduced Power2give.org, a new fundraising platform to support arts and cultural projects in Miami.
    
> Community Foundation of Tampa Bay Provides Funding for Food Providers
The Community Foundation of Tampa Bay awarded a total of $30,000 from its Community Impact Fund to four local food providers to help needy residents during the holiday season.
   
> Community Foundation of East Central Florida Helps Flagler Nonprofits Address Hunger
The Community Foundation of East Central Florida gave four grants to nonprofits in Flagler County that are working to provide food for residents in need. The grants came from the foundation's Flagler Community Fund, which was established by local residents to sustain local nonprofits.

Helios Education Foundation   Helios Education Foundation Funds STEM Middle School Residency Program
Helios Education Foundation has funded a $430,000 planning grant to support the development of a new teacher education program for STEM (science, technology, engineering, & mathematics) middle school teachers at the University of South Florida College of Education.
 
> Community Foundation of Sarasota County Awards 119 Adult Learning Scholarships
The Community Foundation of Sarasota County awarded adult learning scholarships to 119 promising scholars who are returning to school or a university to get a degree or learn a trade after years of raising a family or working. The scholarships, which totaled $236,335, will help students in Sarasota, Manatee and Charlotte counties reach their goal of higher education.
   
> Florida Receives Grant to Improve Student Achievement, College Readiness
Florida is one of 10 states to receive a grant from Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors to help its K-12 and postsecondary education systems align to the Common Core State Standards and assessments that will measure them. The grant program aims to foster long-term collaborations between state higher education and K-12 entities that will improve student achievement and college readiness and, ultimately, increase rates of enrollment and graduation. The state will receive $200,000 per year for three years, pending annual reviews of progress against goals.

Health Foundation of South Florida   Institute for Child & Family Health Receives $100,000 From Health Foundation of South Florida
The Institute for Child and Family Health has received a $100,000 grant from the Health Foundation of South Florida to implement electronic health records for the organization's behavioral health services. The grant funding will be used to develop health information technology infrastructure and expand the use of electronic health records.
 
> Nemours Expands Childhood Obesity Prevention With WPHF Grant
Nemours Children's Hospital and the Winter Park Health Foundation launched a childhood obesity prevention initiative in Eatonville, Maitland and Winter Park child care settings to help grow a healthier generation. The expansion of this one-of-a-kind initiative into 14 child care centers was made possible by a $50,000 grant from the foundation.
   
> Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida's The Pursuit Campaign Selects Florida Chapter of ALS Association As November Winner

> Tatiana Hernandez, arts associate for the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, has been elected to the Emerging Leaders Council of Americans for the Arts, the nation's nonprofit organization for advancing the arts and arts education.
   
> Gene Marshall is leading the Community Foundation of Tampa Bay while the foundation searches for a new president and CEO. Former foundation president and CEO David J. Fischer retired at the end of December. Marshall, a retired senior vice president of JP Morgan Chase, is the foundation's current board chair, and was recently selected as a winner of the prestigious Local Hero Award by the Bank of America Charitable Foundation.
   
> Sandi Scannelli, president/CEO of the Community Foundation for Brevard, was named to Florida Today's "10 to Watch in 2012" list.
   
> Andrew Sherry has been appointed vice president of communications for the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. Sherry was senior vice president, online communications at the Center for American Progress. He was previously director, online ventures at USA TODAY and vice president of a Hong Kong-based travel technology start-up, after a journalism career that included serving as AFP correspondent in Vietnam and Cambodia and regional editor of the Dow Jones-owned Far Eastern Economic Review.
   
> Tina Snider has been named director of marketing and communications at the Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties. Prior to joining the foundation, Snider was managing partner of Elin Communications, a marketing communications firm serving nonprofits. She also served as marketing director at the Achievement Centers for Children and Families in Delray Beach.

> 2012 William E. Simon Prize for Philanthropic Leadership
The Philanthropy Roundtable is seeking nominations for the William E. Simon Prize, which honors living philanthropists who have shown exemplary leadership in their charitable giving, either directly or through the foundations they have created. The recipient of the prize receives a $250,000 award, payable to the charity of his or her choice. Nominations deadline: Feb. 24.

The Miami Foundation is accepting proposals for its 2012 Community Grants Program. Through this program, the foundation invests in quality and innovative programs and organizations that strive to build a Greater Miami. Deadline for submission of pre-proposal: Jan. 20.
   
> Helping Kids Shine Grants Program: Walt Disney World Resort
Walt Disney World Resort welcomes applications for its 2012 Disney Helping Kids Shine Grants program, which will provide a total of $1.5 million in financial support for eligible local nonprofits in 2012. Eligible nonprofits in Orange, Osceola, Seminole, Polk and Lake counties are encouraged to apply. Grant awards may range from $10,000-$75,000, and will be distributed in spring 2012. New this year, the program has revised guidelines to reflect a focus on children and families in three major areas: creativity and innovation; caring for ourselves, our community, our world; and caring neighbor. Application deadline: Jan. 31.
