Knight Arts Challenge 2011   Best Ideas for South Florida Arts Receive $2.9 Million in Funding
Thirty-one ideas - many of them from small cultural groups helping to weave the arts into South Florida's DNA - have been selected as 2011 winners of the Knight Arts Challenge. The challenge, a program of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, is a communitywide contest helping to transform South Florida through the arts.
       
Jaguars Foundation   Philanthropy of Jaguars Foundation, Weavers Will Continue in Jacksonville Despite Sale of Team
Shortly after announcing the sale of the Jaguars, team owners Wayne and Delores Barr Weaver announced that they plan to continue their notable philanthropic work in Jacksonville, and the Jacksonville Jaguars Foundation said it will also continue operating, though without the Weavers' involvement.
   
> Gainesville Community Foundation Gets $1 Million Gift for Domestic Violence Prevention
The Gainesville Community Foundation has received a $1 million gift from Dr. Paul Schilling and Dr. Jay Dutton to establish the Circle of Hope Fund. The fund will support Peaceful Paths Domestic Abuse Network in its mission to serve battered women and children in Alachua, Bradford and Union counties.
    
> Jessie Ball duPont Fund Supports Campaign to Strengthen People's Financial Stability
The Jessie Ball duPont Fund awarded a $600,000 grant over three years for the United Way of Northeast Florida's Real$ense Prosperity Campaign, which provides free tax preparation services and financial education classes to help people strengthen their financial stability.
   
> Community Foundation of Sarasota County Joins DonorEdge Learning Community
The Community Foundation of Sarasota County has joined the GuideStar DonorEdge Learning Community, a group of community foundations that use the DonorEdge tool to collect data directly from the nonprofits in their communities.

As a generation ages, nonprofits in South Florida seek the next wave of philanthropists.

Last week 60 Minutes featured a follow-up segment to its "Hard Times Generation" piece that aired eight months ago, highlighting the plight of homeless families with children in Central Florida. One-third of all homeless families in America today are living in Florida.

Disney Second Harvest   Walt Disney World Resort Helps Second Harvest Build Larger Facility
Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida is closer to realizing its goal of building a new, larger facility with a $500,000 contribution from Walt Disney World Resort. The food bank's new headquarters will more than triple some of its storage areas, enabling the organization to accept and distribute significantly more food and reach more Central Floridians in need. Disney also pledged 20,000 pounds of fresh produce over the next year.
 
> JPMorgan Chase Helps Launch First Mobile Food Pantry in Liberty City
Feeding South Florida has partnered with JPMorgan Chase to launch the first Mobile Food Pantry in Liberty City. With the support of a $40,000 JPMorgan Chase grant, Feeding South Florida's mobile food pantry/farmer's market will distribute food weekly for one year to people in the community who are food insecure.
   
> Thousands Go Hungry in DeSoto County
The recession hit Florida's Gulf Coast hard, but it hit DeSoto County harder. With a rural economy based on agriculture and construction, DeSoto has nowhere near the money or the social service safety net of its coastal neighbors. The need for food has gone through the roof.

> Robin Lankton has been named director of public relations and communications for The Community Foundation of Sarasota County. Lankton most recently served as director of marketing at the Collins Center for Public Policy and has held marketing manager positions at the St. Petersburg Times, Atlanta Journal Constitution and the Herald-Tribune Media Group.
   
> Velma Monteiro-Tribble has joined the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida Foundation's executive team as the foundation's director of grants and programs. Monteiro-Tribble most recently served as chief operating officer and assistant treasurer of the Alcoa Foundation, where she led strategic direction and operations, including corporate citizenship and global programs. Her experience also includes five years at the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, where she specialized in leadership development programs, particularly for initiatives in Latin America and South Africa.
   
> Dennis Scholl, vice president of arts programs for the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, was profiled recently in The Miami Herald. The article describes Scholl as an "innovative thinker" who has brought new ideas and energy to the foundation's arts program.

Gardner Leadership Award, which is presented each year to an individual whose leadership in or with the nonprofit community has been transformative and who has mobilized and unified people, institutions or causes that improve people's lives. Impact 100 Palm Beach County, a charitable fund of the Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties, seeks applications for a $100,000 transformational grant for a project or program to be implemented in and serve residents of South Palm Beach County. The grant will be awarded to a nonprofit in one of the following focus areas: Arts & Culture, Education, Environment, Family and Health & Wellness. Deadline for Letter of Inquiry submission: Jan. 6, 2012.
   
> The Art of Community: Community Foundation of Broward
The Community Foundation of Broward has announced that it will invest $2.5 million in bold, unique projects as part of its Art of Community initiative. The five-year initiative and initial RFP will increase sense of community through collaborative projects that utilize the arts to make an impact on issues of public concern. First proposal deadline: Feb. 10, 2012.
