Jacksonville Nonprofits Receive Emergency
Support From Safety Net Fund
Thirteen nonprofits received grants totaling $387,929 from the Community Safety Net Fund at The Community Foundation in Jacksonville to help provide food and assistance with rent and utility expenses for area residents in need.
This was the second and final round of 2010 funding from the Fund, which was established by the Jessie Ball duPont Fund and other community donors. |

Olivia Cortez-Figueroa Joins FPN Staff! FPN is
pleased to announce that Olivia Cortez-Figueroa has been
appointed FPN's new member services associate, a
position in which she will serve as a key point of contact for FPN members.
She previously was director of student finance for
Everest University Online in Tampa, and prior to that
was community liaison for Rural Social Services
Partnership Inc. She has served as a board member
for the Latino Coalition of Tampa Bay and has studied

Big donations from individuals and their foundations fell for the second consecutive year.
The 10 biggest gifts donated by Americans in 2010 totaled slightly more than $1.3 billion, compared with $2.7 billion in 2009 and $8 billion in 2008. |

Many Foundations Increase Their Public Policy Engagement
The Foundation Center's first report benchmarking the level of engagement of U.S. foundations in policy-related activities shows an increase in grantmaker support for research, public education, and resources to policymakers in recent years. The report finds that one-quarter of the more than 1,300
foundations surveyed either fund or are engaged in such activities, and more than half of those who engage in public policy-related activities increased their levels of support over the last five years. |

Congress Extends IRA Charitable Rollover for Two Years
President Obama signed the Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization, and Job Creation Act of 2010 on
Dec. 17. The bill includes provisions to extend
the IRA Charitable Rollover for two years through 2011,
retroactive to Jan. 2010, allowing individuals age
70.5 and older to take tax-free distributions from their
IRAs of up to $100,000 per taxpayer per taxable year. A special modification
in the bill allows taxpayers age 70.5 and older to make 2010 contributions through Jan. 31, 2011.

constructive use of free time and compassion. Grants range from $5,000 to $100,000 and will be
