Bob Graham Center   High-Tech to Help Turn Students Into Engaged Citizens
The Bob Graham Center for Public Service at the University of Florida received a $3 million grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the Center's largest grant ever, to support new efforts to encourage civic commitment among University of Florida students.
       
The Community Foundation of Sarasota County   Sarasota Nonprofits Get Help to Improve Operational Strength
Thirty-eight nonprofits received a total of $500,000 in grants in the second year of The Community Foundation of Sarasota County's "Building Organizations' Operational Strength Today" BOOST initiative, to help them sustain their operations and improve their fundraising capacity. This brings total BOOST grants over the past two years to $1.5 million.
   
> Jacksonville Nonprofits Receive Emergency Support From Safety Net Fund
Thirteen nonprofits received grants totaling $387,929 from the Community Safety Net Fund at The Community Foundation in Jacksonville to help provide food and assistance with rent and utility expenses for area residents in need. This was the second and final round of 2010 funding from the Fund, which was established by the Jessie Ball duPont Fund and other community donors.
    
> Winter Park Health Foundation Boosts Basic Needs Campaign
The Winter Park Health Foundation has given an additional $100,000 to Heart of Florida United Way's basic needs campaign, which was launched in partnership with Dr. Phillips Charities in May 2009 to provide assistance to Central Florida residents hurt by the economic crisis.
    
> Allegany Supports Health Improvement Projects in Underserved Communities
Allegany Franciscan Ministries awarded grants totaling $3,634,000 to 28 nonprofit community organizations in six Florida counties to support projects that address access to health services and information and improve the health status of underserved or marginalized communities.
     
> Florida's Largest Community Foundation Refreshes Brand, Launches New Web Site
Gulf Coast Community Foundation of Venice has refreshed its brand identity to more effectively tell the story of its work. The brand refresh for Florida's largest community foundation includes a modern logo and a completely redesigned Web site at GulfCoastCF.org.

EngAGEment Initiative   FPN Receives National Funding for Aging Initiative
Florida Philanthropic Network has been awarded a grant from Grantmakers in Aging's EngAGEment Initiative to raise awareness of aging issues and educate grantmakers about opportunities for funding in the field of aging in Florida. The two-year, $30,000 grant will be matched one-for-one with funding from Florida grantmakers.
     
The Patterson Foundation   Patterson Foundation Assesses How to Age With Dignity and Independence
A new initiative by the Patterson Foundation is in the early stages of gathering information from area seniors, as well as from those who interact with older people, to determine what experiences contribute to dignity and independent living.

Olivia Cortez-Figueroa   Olivia Cortez-Figueroa Joins FPN Staff!
FPN is pleased to announce that Olivia Cortez-Figueroa has been appointed FPN's new member services associate, a position in which she will serve as a key point of contact for FPN members.  She previously was director of student finance for Everest University Online in Tampa, and prior to that was community liaison for Rural Social Services Partnership Inc.  She has served as a board member for the Latino Coalition of Tampa Bay and has studied nonprofit management.  Olivia can be reached at olivia@fpnetwork.org, 813-983-7399.

International Giving Update   International Giving by U.S. Foundations Declines
Giving by U.S. foundations for international purposes declined 4% in 2009 from the previous year, according to International Grantmaking Update: A Snapshot of U.S. Foundation Trends, a new report prepared by the Foundation Center in cooperation with the Council on Foundations. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation accounted for more than two out of five international dollars in the 2008 grants sample.
   
> Biggest Gifts to Charity Falter in Bad Economy
Big donations from individuals and their foundations fell for the second consecutive year. The 10 biggest gifts donated by Americans in 2010 totaled slightly more than $1.3 billion, compared with $2.7 billion in 2009 and $8 billion in 2008.

Foundations & Public Policy Report   Many Foundations Increase Their Public Policy Engagement
The Foundation Center's first report benchmarking the level of engagement of U.S. foundations in policy-related activities shows an increase in grantmaker support for research, public education, and resources to policymakers in recent years. The report finds that one-quarter of the more than 1,300 foundations surveyed either fund or are engaged in such activities, and more than half of those who engage in public policy-related activities increased their levels of support over the last five years.
   
> Congress Extends IRA Charitable Rollover for Two Years
President Obama signed the Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization, and Job Creation Act of 2010 on Dec. 17.  The bill includes provisions to extend the IRA Charitable Rollover for two years through 2011, retroactive to Jan. 2010, allowing individuals age 70.5 and older to take tax-free distributions from their IRAs of up to $100,000 per taxpayer per taxable year. A special modification in the bill allows taxpayers age 70.5 and older to make 2010 contributions through Jan. 31, 2011.

> Disney Helping Kids Shine Grants, Walt Disney World Resort
Financial support is available for nonprofits in Orange, Osceola, Seminole, Polk and Lake counties that can demonstrate how their efforts improve children's lives in one or more of the following areas: connecting with adults, character development, constructive use of free time and compassion. Grants range from $5,000 to $100,000 and will be distributed in spring 2011.  Deadline: Jan. 31.
