Foundation Center Advisory   U.S. Foundation Giving Likely to Increase Modestly in 2011, New Survey Finds
Giving by the nation's foundations is likely to post modest growth in 2011, although it will probably be several years before giving matches the peak levels of 2008, according to a new advisory from the Foundation Center. About 21% of foundation respondents to a Sept. 2010 survey indicated that their giving will rise next year, with corporate foundations being most likely to anticipate an increase. Most foundations (59%) expect their giving to remain about the same as in 2010.

High Net Worth Study   Wealthy Donors Remain Strongly Committed to Nonprofits, Though Giving Levels Declined, New Research Shows
High net worth households continued to support charitable organizations in 2009 at levels consistent with those seen in 2005 and 2007, with 98% of wealthy households donating to charitable causes in 2009, according to the 2010 Bank of America Merrill Lynch Study of High Net Worth Philanthropy. But wealthy households' average gift amounts decreased 35% from 2007. Wealthy donors contributed just over 9% of their income to charitable causes last year, compared to approximately 11% in 2007.

PILOTs Report   Cities' Attempts to Seek Payments From Nonprofits Could Backfire, Study Finds
At least 117 municipalities in 18 states are collecting payments in lieu of taxes (PILOTs) from nonprofits, according to a new study by the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy. The study says that although PILOTs can provide cities with crucial revenue, they are often "haphazard, secretive and calculated in an ad hoc manner that results in widely varying payments among similar nonprofits."  The report warns that a municipality's attempt to collect PILOTs can prompt a battle with nonprofits and lead to years of "contentious, costly and unproductive litigation."
