Helios Education Foundation   Helios Education Foundation Provides Match for Florida i3 Grant
Take Stock in Children, a nonprofit providing mentors, educational scholarships and hope for Florida's low-income and at-risk youth, received a $1 million grant from the Helios Education Foundation that fulfills its 20% match requirement as a recipient of $5 million from the U.S. Department of Education's Investing in Innovation (i3) grant program.
       
      Wells Fargo   Wells Fargo Supports Affordable Housing Efforts in Florida
Wells Fargo's Housing Foundation awarded grants totaling $5 million to nonprofit housing groups in 34 communities, including four Florida cities (Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Palm Beach, Tampa). The grants are part of the company's nationwide effort to increase the availability of affordable housing.
   
> Edyth Bush Charitable Foundation Profiled in "Philanthropy" Magazine
The Edyth Bush Charitable Foundation is profiled in the Fall 2010 issue of "Philanthropy" magazine, published by The Philanthropy Roundtable.  The article notes that Edyth Bush brought to Florida a "'Minnesota' style of philanthropy - low-key, careful, and above all tough-minded - that for nearly 40 years has been the hallmark of the foundation that bears her name."

Focus On: Media Innovation
  
> Knight Foundation Opens Media Innovation Contest, Receives Google Grant
The fifth year of the Knight News Challenge, a media innovation contest, funded and run by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, has opened for applications (deadline is Dec. 1).  Knight offers $5 million each year for ideas to use digital platforms to deliver news and information to geographically defined communities.  For the first time this year, the Challenge will focus on four categories: Mobile, Authenticity, Sustainability and Community.  Also for the first time, a grant from Google Inc. to Knight Foundation will be partially used to increase the prize money by $1 million.  Google gave $2 million to support Knight's media innovation initiatives.  
   
> Patterson Foundation Enables New Media Journalism Innovation
At a time when the future of traditional journalism is in flux, The Patterson Foundation recently supported the Block by Block Community News Summit in Chicago, where more than 100 operators of local news sites and blogs from across the country met for the first time to discuss community news innovation and sustainability.

Gates Foundation    Gates Foundation Commits to Increase Completion Rates at Two-Year Colleges
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation announced a $34.8 million, five-year commitment to raise stagnant completion rates in the nation's two-year public institutions.  Lagging completion rates in two-year colleges are seen as a major impediment to meeting the Obama administration's goal of regaining the world lead in college degrees by 2020.
   
> Helios Foundation & Open Society Foundations Fund Largest Scholarship Partnership in Hillsborough Community College's History
Hillsborough Community College announced the launch of the largest scholarship partnership in its history, a four-year performance-based scholarship demonstration designed to assist 750 low-income students succeed in math.  Helios Education Foundation and the Open Society Foundations have contributed $2.4 million to this initiative, with HCC receiving $1.5 million.

> Tampa Bay Funders Forum Merges With Florida Philanthropic Network
Tampa Bay Funders Forum, a network of charitable foundations and other grantmakers in the Tampa Bay region, will merge with FPN effective Jan. 1, 2011.  The purpose of the Tampa Bay Funders Forum will remain the same - creating an opportunity for funders to meet, share and discuss ideas impacting the funding community.
   
George Sheldon   FPN Program Video Archive: A Conversation With George Sheldon
George Sheldon, Secretary of the Florida Department of Children and Families, spoke at an FPN convening on Oct. 14 in Orlando about the Department's top priorities; successful and innovative public-private partnerships and the role funders have played in these partnerships; and how funders can help sustain and expand successful outcomes.

Urban Institute Report   Human Service Nonprofits Report Late Payments, Other Problems With Government Contracts
Almost 41% of human service groups nationwide, and 28% in Florida, reported late payments from state, federal and local government sources in 2009, according to a new report by the Urban Institute that is based on a survey of human service nonprofits.  Florida has the 11th-highest percentage of problems regarding changes to government contracts/grants, but is just 41st in problems related to late payments.  Other findings: 46% of Florida human services nonprofits say they reduced or froze salaries in 2009; 43% cut staff.  Download the report or the Florida profile.
   
> Community Foundation Grants Will Help Nonprofits Boost Revenues, Cut Costs
Gulf Coast Community Foundation of Venice awarded more than $200,000 in operating grants to help seven local nonprofits diversify their revenue streams or cut costs through new efficiencies amid the tough economy.

> Donations Dropped a Record 11% at Nation's Biggest Charities
The Chronicle of Philanthropy reports that donations to the nation's biggest charities dropped 11% last year - the worst decline in the two decades since The Chronicle started its Philanthropy 400 ranking of groups that raise the most from private sources.  Nine Florida nonprofits are on this year's list, led by Food for the Poor at No. 5, which saw its donations drop 27.6%.
