Wells Fargo Supports
Affordable Housing Efforts in Florida
Wells Fargo's Housing Foundation awarded grants totaling $5 million to nonprofit housing
groups in 34 communities, including four Florida cities (Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Palm Beach, Tampa).
The grants are part of the company's nationwide effort to increase the availability of affordable housing. |

Knight Foundation Opens Media Innovation Contest,
Receives Google Grant
The fifth year of the Knight News Challenge, a media
innovation contest, funded and run by the John S. and
James L. Knight Foundation, has opened for applications
(deadline is Dec. 1). Knight offers $5 million each year
for ideas to use digital platforms to deliver news and information to geographically defined communities. For the first time this year, the Challenge will focus on four categories: Mobile, Authenticity,
Sustainability and Community. Also for the first time, a
grant from Google Inc. to Knight Foundation will be partially used to increase the prize money by $1 million. Google gave $2 million to support Knight's media innovation initiatives.

Completion Rates at Two-Year Colleges
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation announced a $34.8 million, five-year commitment to raise stagnant completion rates in the nation's two-year public institutions. Lagging completion rates in two-year colleges are seen as a major
impediment to meeting the Obama administration's goal of regaining the world lead in college degrees by 2020. |

Human Service Nonprofits Report Late Payments, Other Problems With Government Contracts
Almost 41% of human service groups nationwide, and 28% in Florida, reported late payments from state, federal and local government sources in 2009, according
to a new report by the Urban Institute that is based on a survey of human service nonprofits. Florida has the 11th-highest percentage of problems regarding changes to government contracts/grants, but is just 41st in problems related to late payments. Other findings: 46% of Florida human services nonprofits
say they reduced or froze salaries in 2009; 43% cut staff.

Donations Dropped a Record 11% at Nation's Biggest Charities
The Chronicle of Philanthropy reports that donations to the nation's biggest charities dropped 11%
last year - the worst decline in the two decades since The Chronicle started its Philanthropy 400 ranking of
groups that raise the most from private sources.
Nine Florida nonprofits are
on this year's list, led by Food for the Poor at No. 5, which saw its donations drop 27.6%. |
