Edyth Bush Charitable Foundation   Edyth Bush Charitable Foundation Announces New Mission
After 37 years, the Edyth Bush Charitable Foundation has announced its new mission: "Creating Innovative Civic Solutions Helping People Help Themselves." In line with this mission, the foundation reached out to homelessness experts in Central Florida to develop an innovative solution to help a community affected by joblessness, home loss and a weak economy.
       
Quantum Foundation   Quantum Foundation Supports Health Projects in Its Neighborhood
The Quantum Foundation awarded the 2010 grants from its Quantum Neighborhood Initiative Fund to support community health improvements within the neighborhood surrounding its headquarters. The grants fund collaborative grassroots and innovative projects with the potential for transformational and sustainable impact on the health of the neighborhood.
   
> Jacksonville Jaguars Foundation Funds Local Youth-Serving Agencies
The Jaguars Foundation awarded $764,000 in its first grant cycle of 2010 to 27 local nonprofits serving economically and socially disadvantaged children and families in Northeast Florida. The grants included general program grants and youth anti-obesity grants.
     
> Charlotte Community Foundation Helps Wildlife Center Create a Home
Grants from the Charlotte Community Foundation helped the Peace River Wildlife Center improve its shore bird habitat, to offer a natural setting for its inhabitants, and refurbish its pelican pond.
   
> Olive Garden's Pasta for Pennies Raises Record $6.1 Million for Leukemia & Lymphoma
More than three million students throughout the U.S. pooled their spare change to raise $6.1 million for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society through Olive Garden's Pasta for Pennies program.

State of the Sector Report   Jacksonville-Area Nonprofits Stretched Thin and Financially Distressed, New Report Finds
While the nonprofit sector in Northeast Florida has grown at a healthy pace in the past decade, the sector today is stretched thin and financially distressed, according to the latest edition of the State of the Sector, a periodic status report on the region's nonprofit sector underwritten by the Jessie Ball duPont Fund for the Nonprofit Center of Northeast Florida. The report notes that the financial health of the region's nonprofits has suffered as a result of the recession, with 42% operating in the red in 2008 - up sharply from 33% in 2007.  Download the report.

Charitable giving not only creates good works but pays off in jobs and improved quality of life, writes Kathy Baylis, president and CEO of the Economic Development Corp. of Sarasota County, in the Sarasota Herald-Tribune.
   
> Knight Foundation Invests in National Fund for Workforce Solutions
The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation has awarded $1.1 million to the National Fund for Workforce Solutions to test local approaches to preparing jobseekers and workers for careers. The grant directly supports the participation of the National Fund in the Social Innovation Fund.
   
> Nonprofits Added Jobs While Businesses Lost Them, Study Finds
Nonprofit employment grew by an average of 2.5% per year between the second quarter of 2007 and the second quarter of 2009, compared to a for-profit employment drop of -3.3%, according to an analysis of 21 states by the Johns Hopkins University Center for Civil Society Studies.

The Giving Pledge   Floridian Tom Monaghan Signs Gates/Buffett Giving Pledge
Tom Monaghan, the founder of Domino's Pizza who now focuses his time on Catholic philanthropy, is among 40 billionaires who have signed the Giving Pledge, a campaign by Bill and Melinda Gates and Warren Buffett to encourage the nation's wealthiest individuals and families to commit at least half of their wealth to philanthropy. Monaghan's Ave Maria School of Law moved to Naples, Fla. to be located near Ave Maria University.
   
> America's Biggest Companies Hold Steady on Their Giving
73% of businesses expect their cash and product giving in 2010 to be about the same as in 2009, according to a Chronicle of Philanthropy survey of 162 of the country's largest corporations.

IRS Tax Revocation   IRS Offers Small Charities One-Time Relief From Tax Revocation
Small nonprofits at risk of losing their exemptions because they failed to file required informational tax returns for 2007-2009 by the required deadline can preserve their status by filing returns by Oct. 15, 2010, under a one-time relief program offered by the IRS.  Check the IRS list of more than 14,000 Florida nonprofits at risk of losing their tax-exempt status.

> Veronica Brady named vice president for philanthropy and donor relations for the Gulf Coast Community Foundation of Venice. She was previously senior vice president of private wealth management for SunTrust Bank.
   
> Siobhan Canty has joined the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation as program director for strategic initiatives, where she will help identify effective strategies for engaging people in transforming their communities. > John Noland, a Fort Myers attorney, is the new president of The Florida Bar Foundation, where he has served on the board of directors since 2001.
    
> Upendo Shabazz-Phillips will join Allegany Franciscan Ministries as regional vice president, Palm Beach region (serving Palm Beach, Martin and St. Lucie counties) on Sept. 20.  Currently, she is vice president of community impact for the United Way of Palm Beach County.
