Bank of America Invests in Youth Leadership
Bank of America is partnering with 90 nonprofits and putting 230 civic-minded high schoolers to work this summer as part of its Student Leaders program. The Student Leaders, selected in recognition of their service to the community, participate in eight-week local nonprofit internships, funded by $1 million from the Bank of America Charitable Foundation, where they gain hands-on experience
and learn the finer points of nonprofit management and leadership while providing valuable service to nonprofits in need of resources. |

Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund Supports Florida Projects to Protect Wildlife & Ecosystems
Efforts to protect sea turtles, coral reefs and scrubs-jays in Florida have
received support from the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund, which announced that 10 Florida-based
projects were among the 2010 recipients of nearly $1.5
million in grants to protect vulnerable wildlife and
ecosystems. |

Arsht Center's Masterworks Series Funded Through 2013 With Knight Challenge Grant
The Masterworks Season at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County will provide classical music and dance performances through 2013 with new support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.
The $600,000 grant, part of Knight Foundation's national Arts Program, will be matched with $1.2 million of private sector support. |

AT&T Supports Effort to Increase Graduation Rates
To help combat the alarming high school dropout rate among the nation's at-risk students, AT&T has announced a $1.5 million contribution to Communities In Schools,
which will use the funding to increase the number of school-based site coordinators who help connect at-risk-students in affiliate
schools with academic support, mentoring, counseling, after-school programs, career development, intervention, health care and other resources. |

Gates Foundation Joins
Initiative to Improve Math Success at Community Colleges
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation joined four other foundations to invest in improving student success in math at community colleges in Florida and four other states. The $14 million, two-year initiative aims to double the proportion of students who are mathematically prepared to succeed in further academic study and/or academic pursuits.
Three Florida community colleges are involved in the effort: Miami Dade College, Tallahassee Community College, Valencia Community College. |

Gulf Coast Community Foundation Invests in STEM Education
Gulf Coast Community Foundation of Venice launched a
five-year project to jump-start improved teaching and
learning results in science, technology, engineering and
math (STEM). The program will invest up to $2.5 million
at five middle schools and three high schools in
Sarasota and Charlotte counties, and act as an impetus
for community-wide involvement in STEM activities. |

Helios Foundation Invests in Florida's Early Childhood Education
Helios Education Foundation is investing close to $1 million in three early childhood education (ECE) initiatives that will expose children to positive learning environments and provide high quality training for ECE teachers in Florida and Arizona. The largest grant went to the Early Learning Coalition of Polk County, which received $497,608 to support
ECE teacher professional development programs. |

Jobs for the Future, Inc. Awarded Social Innovation Fund Grant
The National Fund for Workforce Solutions and Jobs for
the Future (JFF) received a two-year, $7.7 million grant
from the Corporation for National and Community
Services' Social Innovation Fund. Partnering with JFF, the National Fund will
work to increase economic opportunities for disadvantaged workers and jobseekers through investments in regional workforce collaboratives to identify jobs and career pathways in high-growth industries.
The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation is one of
nine core funders for the National Fund. |

Jacksonville Safety Net Organizations Receive Emergency Funding
Fifteen Jacksonville nonprofits have received almost $1 million
to help feed and house individuals and families suffering from the economic recession, thanks to the efforts of the community's major donors and philanthropic institutions. The grants represent the first wave of funding this year from
the Community Safety Net Fund at The Community Foundation in Jacksonville, which was re-opened in June with a $500,000 gift from the Jessie Ball duPont Fund. |

U.S. Charitable Giving Posted Largest-Ever Drop in 2009
Total estimated charitable giving in the United States
dropped 3.6% in 2009 (a 3.2% decline adjusted for inflation), according to the latest Giving USA report. This is the steepest decline in current dollar terms
since Giving USA began its annual reports in 1956. Giving rose for human service and health organizations but dropped for the arts and education. |

FPN President David Biemesderfer Appointed to National Philanthropy Board
FPN President & CEO David Biemesderfer has been elected to the board of directors of the Forum of Regional Associations of Grantmakers
in Arlington, VA, a national philanthropic leader and a network of 34 regional associations of grantmakers from across the country that collectively represent more than 4,500 grantmakers.
The Forum's membership elected Biemesderfer to serve a
three-year term on the board at the Forum's annual
meeting on July 27.
