Eckerd Family Foundation   Eckerd Family Foundation to Spend Last Dollar, Close Up Shop
The Eckerd Family Foundation, endowed with $100 million from Jack Eckerd's fortune from his Eckerd Drugs chain, is winding down its long-held mission to help troubled youth and foster children. The foundation plans to spend the remainder of its funds by 2012 and close its doors by 2014.
       
Bringing Science Home   Patterson Foundation Helps Launch Chronic Disease Collaboration
The Patterson Foundation has partnered with the University of South Florida to help people better manage chronic disease. The partnership includes a $5.6 million gift from the foundation to launch Bringing Science Home, an initiative to develop new ways of educating, training and caring for populations with chronic disease.
   
> Community Foundation of Central Florida Expands Its Knowledge Base
This summer, the Community Foundation of Central Florida continues its "Make a Difference" campaign to promote its new knowledge base - located at www.MyCFCF.org - that features detailed information on hundreds of Central Florida nonprofits. Central Florida nonprofits are invited to complete a portrait in the knowledge base. Grantmakers who fund in Central Florida can use the resource to help with their due diligence. > Dr. Phillips Charities Helps Ready Students for the Workforce
More middle and high school students could be financially literate and ready for the workforce by their graduation thanks to a new grant from Dr. Phillips Charities to Junior Achievement of Central Florida. The grant was among more than $4.6 million in grants and pledges that Dr. Phillips Charities awarded to local nonprofit organizations in April and May.

Jessie Ball duPont Fund   Jacksonville Grantmakers Relaunch Community Safety Net Fund
As the number of needy persons in Jacksonville continues to grow, the Jessie Ball duPont Fund and other private donors in the Jacksonville area have come together to reopen the Community Safety Net Fund, which sustains nonprofit organizations providing food, shelter and emergency assistance. The Jessie Ball duPont Fund invested $500,000 in the Safety Net Fund, the Lucy Gooding Charitable Foundation contributed $200,000 and other private donors have added an additional $110,000.
    
> Basic Needs Campaign Gets Boost From Winter Park Health Foundation
The Heart of Florida United Way's Basic Needs Campaign received $75,000 from the Winter Park Health Foundation Older Adults Work Group to help families where an older adult resides in Eatonville, Maitland and Winter Park.  Work Group members were moved to provide additional support after receiving reports that older adults continue to struggle in this economy.  The Basic Needs Campaign provides immediate financial help to Central Floridians needing assistance with food, rent, transportation and other life essentials.

Mote Marine Laboratory    Foundation Considering Multi-Million Dollar Prize for Gulf Spill Fix
The X PRIZE Foundation, which offers cash awards for solutions to large-scale technological challenges, is building its latest $10-million competition around the BP oil spill, according to Fast Company.  The foundation says it is "considering, but has not yet developed," such a multi-million dollar competition. "We are currently consulting with experts and advisors on the viability of this potential competition to incentivize the development of rapidly-deployable methods for the clean-up of crude oil along our coastlines and within our oceans," the foundation said in a statement.

The Better Business Bureau Wise Giving Alliance cautions that the Gulf oil spill is unlike previous disasters, and offers specific advice to potential donors and volunteers.

Scholarship Winners   Florida Community Foundations Help Hundreds of Students Achieve College Education
Three of Florida's largest community foundations recently awarded scholarships to nearly 700 deserving students to help them reach their goal of higher education.  Gulf Coast Community Foundation of Venice awarded 366 scholarships totaling more than $450,000 to students from Sarasota and Charlotte counties and Boca Grande for the 2010-11 academic year.  The Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties helped 75 inspiring local students attend college with $558,600 in scholarships from 40 separate scholarship funds established by donors.  The Community Foundation of Sarasota County awarded scholarships totaling $515,900 to 251 students in Sarasota, Manatee and Charlotte counties, part of the more than $1.1 million in scholarships that the foundation awarded in its 2009-10 fiscal year - the third year in a row that its scholarships have surpassed $1 million.
   
> Helios Education Foundation Teams Up With Tampa Bay Rays to Support Education
The Helios Education Foundation has teamed up with the Rays Baseball Foundation and the United Way of Tampa Bay to help children achieve their education potential.  Each time the Tampa Bay Rays score a run from May 24-July 11, Helios will donate $250 to the United Way's education initiative focused on helping children and youth increase their school readiness, build academic success and develop strong life skills.

Volunteering in America   Number of People Volunteering Up in 2009, Report Finds
Despite difficult economic times, the number of Americans volunteering in their communities jumped by 1.6 million last year, the largest increase in six years, a new report from the Corporation for National and Community Service finds.  The annual Volunteering in America report found that 63.4 million Americans volunteered through a formal organization last year, giving more than 8.1 billion hours of volunteer service worth an estimated $169 billion.  Florida's volunteer rate ranks 47th out of the 50 states and DC.

> FPN President, Members Named to Florida Chamber Quality of Life Caucus
FPN President & CEO David Biemesderfer has been named to the Florida Chamber Foundation's Quality of Life & Quality Places Caucus, a group that will provide long-term and visionary policy recommendations to the Florida Chamber on quality of life issues in Florida.  Members of the Quality of Life Caucus Steering Committee include several FPN members: Teri Hansen, Gulf Coast Community Foundation of Venice; David Odahowski, Edyth Bush Charitable Foundation; and Susan Towler, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida.
   
> FPN Forms Oil Spill Task Force

> John Bracken named director of new media for the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. Previously, Bracken served as a program officer at the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, where he managed investments in technology and innovation and global Internet freedom.
