Oil Spill Relief   Greater Escambia Community Foundation Opens Pensacola Environmental Relief Fund in Response to Oil Spill Disaster
In response to what may become the Gulf Coast's most significant environmental disaster, the Greater Escambia Community Foundation has opened the Pensacola Environmental Relief Fund.  Proceeds from the fund will support nonprofits engaged in first-response work to help communities most affected by the oil spill in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties.
       
Sant La   South Florida's Haitian Community Gets Help to Ease Earthquake Repercussions
South Florida's Haitian community will receive new resources to cope with the severe local stresses resulting from the earthquake in Haiti, through grants totaling $600,000 from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. The grants will help five Miami-based nonprofits address basic needs assistance and counseling, legal services, and census and naturalization outreach.
 
> Martin County Community Foundation's Giving Day Raises Nearly $200,000
In an eight-hour flurry of philanthropy, 74 local nonprofit agencies raised nearly $200,000 as part of the Martin County Community Foundation's second annual Giving Day.
     
> Winter Park Health Foundation Helps Bring Culture Change to Assisted Living Facilities
Hoping to encourage the development of a home-like environment in local assisted living facilities, the Winter Park Health Foundation approved a $33,416 grant to the Florida Pioneer Network/Senior Resource Alliance to coach facility managers and educate consumers.
     
> Community Foundation in Jacksonville Helps Equip Region's Nonprofit Sector for Future
The Nonprofit Center of Northeast Florida received a $196,400 grant from The Community Foundation in Jacksonville for a new initiative designed to enhance the public's ability to connect with nonprofits and improve the ability of nonprofits to work together.

Nonprofits Going Green   Nonprofits Honored for Going Green
Nonprofit groups working to "go green" while making a difference were honored at the 3rd Annual Nonprofits Going Green Awards Luncheon on April 14 at the Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties. Fifteen nonprofits received a total of $25,000 in grants.
       
Publix   Publix Celebrates Earth Day With Donation to Arbor Day Foundation
In recognition of the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, Publix sponsored the planting of 40,000 trees within the company's five-state footprint. For each reusable bag sold at Publix stores April 22-25, Publix pledged to donate $1 (up to $40,000) to the Arbor Day Foundation.
 
> Disneynature Collaborates With Nature Conservancy to Save 35,000 Acres of Coral Reef
Disneynature announced that its "See 'OCEANS,' Save Oceans" campaign will protect more than 35,000 acres of coral reef in The Bahamas on behalf of the moviegoers who came out to see Disneynature's motion picture "Oceans" during its opening week.
     
> Wells Fargo Promotes Simple Actions to Protect Environment Through Banking
Wells Fargo encouraged banking customers to change their banking practices with five simple actions to help protect the environment, and gave $250,000 to the Earth Day Network.

Teacher   Grants Help Teachers Enhance Curriculum Through the Arts
The Community Foundation of Sarasota County approved $82,582 in grants from the Leslie and Margaret Weller Fund to help 23 Sarasota and Manatee teachers enhance their curriculum with innovative special arts projects ranging from poetry, music, writing and fine art to filmmaking and interdisciplinary science and technology.
 
> Gates Foundation Commits to Transforming Remedial Education
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation announced a commitment of up to $110 million to help community colleges boost graduation rates by replacing weak remedial programs with new technologies and fresh ideas. The funds will be used to research and scale innovative programs that help under-prepared students spend less time and money catching up and lead to improved retention and completion.
     
> Helios Education Foundation Releases 2009 Annual Report
The Helios Education Foundation's interactive, completely electronic, online annual report showcases its partnerships, investments and commitments over the past year.

The board of directors of Florida Philanthropic Network has named David Biemesderfer as the organization's new President and Chief Executive Officer, effective June 1.  David succeeds Katie Ensign, who will join the Jessie Ball duPont Fund as a Senior Program Officer.

Southwest Florida Communiity Foundation    Southwest Florida Community Foundation A Key Partner in New Project to Help Business Start-Ups
The Southwest Florida MicroEnterprise Project will provide training and loans to make it easier for people of low to moderate income to start a new business in Southwest Florida.  Southwest Florida Community Foundation is a founding partner of the project, with Goodwill Industries of Southwest Florida, Southwest Florida Enterprise Center, SCORE and ACCION, USA.
    
> Sarasota-Area Nonprofits Worry That Growth Is Fleeting As Funding Runs Out
Federal stimulus dollars and private funds have allowed some Sarasota-area nonprofit groups providing social services to hire and expand.  But there are concerns that much of the additional cash will soon run out, even as demand for social services remains high.
       
> Regional Workforce Funders Group Awards First Grants for Worker Training
The Manatee Sarasota Workforce Funders Collaborative made its first grants to help local employers prepare workers for higher-skilled, higher-paying jobs.  The two-county group of public and private funding organizations awarded $35,457 for worker training at area healthcare providers.
      
> Florida Expects $6 Billion Hole in Budget in 2011
Florida legislators closed out their 60-day session on April 30 with a $70.4 billion budget and fears that next year's financial picture will be worse.

Because It Matters     Two Florida grantmakers received Wilmer Shields Rich Awards for Excellence in Communications from the Council on Foundations, in the Public Information Campaigns category: Gulf Coast Community Foundation of Venice took a gold award for its Because It Matters regional civility campaign; the Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties received a bronze award for its Nonprofits Going Green campaign.
