Get Googling Orlando   Edyth Bush Charitable Foundation Backs Orlando's Google Push
The Edyth Bush Charitable Foundation committed up to $100,000 to help nonprofits fully implement a ultra-high-speed Internet network if Google selects Orlando as a test site for the network. City residents and businesses can lobby Google to choose Orlando at GetGoogling.com.
       
Jessie Ball duPont Fund   Jessie Ball duPont Fund Helps Florida Girl Scouts Go Green
The Jessie Ball duPont Fund awarded $132,000 to Girl Scouts of the USA to pilot environmental projects in five Florida Girl Scout councils. The grant was among 14 awards totaling $1.9 million made by trustees in February, of which four grants totaling more than $530,000 supported work in Florida.
 
> Community Foundation of Tampa Bay Ranked Among Nation’s Most Efficient Charities
A recent editorial in the Tampa Tribune praised the Community Foundation of Tampa Bay for once again being ranked among the most efficient charities in the country, according to Charity Navigator. The foundation recently celebrated its 20th anniversary of giving.
     
> Patterson Foundation Helps Partnership for Needy Reach New Milestone
Season of Sharing, a 10-year community-wide fundraising partnership for the needy in Sarasota, Charlotte, Manatee and DeSoto counties, reached an unprecedented $1.5 million in donations in March, thanks to a $250,000 outright grant and a $250,000 matching challenge from The Patterson Foundation.  Season of Sharing was created by the Herald-Tribune Media Group and the Community Foundation of Sarasota County.
     
> Community Foundation of North Florida, Knight Foundation Partner to Advance "Informed, Engaged" Tallahassee
The Community Foundation of North Florida will receive up to $2.5 million over the next seven years from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation to foster an "informed, engaged" Tallahassee. The effort is part of Knight’s Community Foundation Initiative to deepen its focus on ensuring communities have the information they need to make decisions about their lives.

  FPN Meets With Legislators on Capitol Hill
FPN led a team of 10 Florida grantmakers to Washington, D.C., on March 17 for visits with 22 members of Florida's congressional delegation and their staffs, as part of the annual Foundations on the Hill event, which was co-sponsored by the Council on Foundations and the Forum of Regional Associations of Grantmakers.  FPN coordinated and led the Florida delegation for the event, as part of FPN's ongoing public policy efforts to protect, promote and strengthen Florida's philanthropy and grantmaking field.

State Budget Crises Report    State Budget Crises: Ripping the Safety Net Held by Nonprofits
A new report by the National Council of Nonprofits paints a sobering picture of how nonprofits are facing three serious threats from state governments owing to the current economic recession: governments slashing funds for programs they expect nonprofits to deliver, withholding payments from nonprofits for contracted services already delivered, and seeking revenue from nonprofits through new fees and taxes.  The report outlines how these troubling trends impact all nonprofits and produce a ripple effect hurting communities, charities, foundations and, paradoxically, government itself.

> Robert Briggs has begun his four-year term as chairman of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation’s board of trustees.  Briggs became a Knight Foundation trustee in 2002 and served as vice chair from 2005 until his appointment as chair elect in March 2009.  He is president of the GAR Foundation in Akron and chairman emeritus and former CEO of the law firm Buckingham, Doolittle & Burroughs.  Briggs succeeds W. Gerald Austen, M.D., who has been a foundation trustee since 1987 and served as chairman of the board for the past 14 years.
   
> Mark D. Constantine has been named vice president for strategy, policy and learning at the Jessie Ball duPont Fund.  He served as senior fellow for the Fund from 2005 through 2009, and before that, advised the Fund as an independent consultant.
   
> Julie Scales, executive director of the Pinellas Community Foundation, was elected to the board of directors of the Pinellas County Estate Planning Council.

This new report shows that baby boomers, confronted with longer life expectancy and shriveled retirement savings, are choosing to stay on in leadership positions in the independent sector.  Unfortunately, this means that Gen X-ers and Millennials are left waiting for the torch to be passed. Produced by the Council on Foundations, Andrea and Charles Bronfman Philanthropies’ 21/64, Emerging Practitioners in Philanthropy and Resource Generation, the report contains 18 interviews with sector leaders, both younger and older, offering their perspectives on the impact of this trend for the field, and what can be done about it.
     
Raising Their Voices   AT&T Releases Report on Ending High School Dropout Epidemic
AT&T has released a new report addressing the nation's high school dropout epidemic from the perspective of students, teachers and parents, offering a number of recommendations on how to confront the problem at the local level.  The report is based on group discussions that brought together teachers, parents and students for candid, face-to-face dialogues in four communities, and includes a discussion guide that can be used to facilitate similar discussions in other communities.

Gulf Coast Community Foundation    Gulf Coast Community Foundation of Venice’s 2009 Annual Report and 2010 desk calendar received honors in the 2010 Suncoast ADDY Awards competition. The awards for creative excellence in local advertising were presented recently by the American Advertising Federation-Suncoast Chapter.
