State Budget Crises: Ripping the Safety Net Held by Nonprofits
A new report by the National Council of Nonprofits
paints a sobering picture of how nonprofits are facing
three serious threats from state governments owing to
the current economic recession: governments slashing
funds for programs they expect nonprofits to deliver,
withholding payments from nonprofits for contracted
services already delivered, and seeking revenue from
nonprofits through new fees and taxes. The report
outlines how these troubling trends impact all
nonprofits and produce a ripple effect hurting communities, charities, foundations and, paradoxically, government itself.

Trading Power
This new report shows that baby boomers, confronted with longer life expectancy and
shriveled retirement savings, are choosing to stay on in leadership positions in the independent sector. Unfortunately, this means that Gen X-ers and Millennials are left waiting for the torch to be passed. Produced
by the Council on Foundations, Andrea and Charles Bronfman Philanthropies’ 21/64, Emerging Practitioners in Philanthropy and Resource Generation, the report contains 18 interviews
with sector leaders, both younger and older, offering their perspectives on the impact of this trend
for the field, and what can be done about it. |
