Manatee Community Foundation, Knight Foundation Partner to Increase Local Impact
The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation will invest up to $2.5 million to foster an "informed, engaged" Bradenton over the next seven years through the Manatee Community Foundation. The new approach will modify how the Knight Foundation works in the Bradenton region and other Knight communities. Grantseekers in Bradenton will apply for
funding through the Manatee Community Foundation, and an advisory committee in Bradenton will guide the community foundation on how to use the funds. |

Florida Bar Foundation Helps Haitians Apply for Temporary Protected Status
The Florida Bar Foundation has awarded grants totaling $297,000 to legal aid offices in Florida that have seen an influx of Haitians applying for Temporary Protected Status, which the U.S. government
extended to allow Haitians already living in the United States to continue to live and work in the country for 18 months from January 2010. |

FPN Meets With Haitian Ambassador
FPN representatives met with Haiti's ambassador to the
United States, Raymond Joseph, in a small private
meeting on Feb. 18 to hear the ambassador's firsthand
assessment of Haiti's short- and long-term needs in the
aftermath of the earthquake. FPN Vice President David
Biemesderfer expressed to Ambassador Joseph the
long-term commitment of Florida's philanthropic sector
to help rebuild Haiti and to support Haitians living in
Florida who have been impacted by the disaster, and
shared
FPN's summary of how Florida
grantmakers have responded to the crisis.

Three Florida Philanthropy Leaders Join Florida Philanthropic Network Board
At its meeting on Feb.10, FPN's board of directors elected three new
members to three-year terms on the board:
Katie Scanlan, Senior Vice President and Southeast Region Executive for Corporate Social Responsibility at Bank of America;
Ian Smith, Senior Vice President
and Chief Communications Officer for the Helios
Education Foundation;
Susan Towler, Executive
Director, Community Affairs for Blue Cross and Blue
Shield of Florida and Vice President of The Blue Foundation for a Healthy Florida. |

FPN Holds Second Annual Statewide Summit on Philanthropy
More than 150 people from Florida's grantmaking field
and other sectors gathered in Orlando on February 11-12 for
FPN's second annual Statewide Summit on Philanthropy. The
event explored how foundations in the state are working in new
ways to solve some of the state's most intractable problems in
such areas as health care, education, workforce development and
social services. Funders also had the opportunity to
network with others working on similar issues or having similar
