Manatee Community Foundation   Manatee Community Foundation, Knight Foundation Partner to Increase Local Impact
The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation will invest up to $2.5 million to foster an "informed, engaged" Bradenton over the next seven years through the Manatee Community Foundation. The new approach will modify how the Knight Foundation works in the Bradenton region and other Knight communities. Grantseekers in Bradenton will apply for funding through the Manatee Community Foundation, and an advisory committee in Bradenton will guide the community foundation on how to use the funds.
       
FL Bar Foundation   Florida Bar Foundation Helps Haitians Apply for Temporary Protected Status
The Florida Bar Foundation has awarded grants totaling $297,000 to legal aid offices in Florida that have seen an influx of Haitians applying for Temporary Protected Status, which the U.S. government extended to allow Haitians already living in the United States to continue to live and work in the country for 18 months from January 2010.
 
> Publix Customers Help Raise More Than $4.4 Million for Haiti Relief and Development
In its three-and-a-half week register donation program, Publix customers and associates raised more than $4.4 million in support of the American Red Cross Haiti Relief & Development Fund.
     
> Gulf Coast Community Foundation Reaches $100 Million in Grants
With a $100,000 grant to help South County Family YMCA launch Venice's first wellness-based public charter school, Gulf Coast Community Foundation of Venice has reached $100 million in grants awarded since the foundation's inception in late 1995.
     
> Quantum Foundation Helps Palm Beach Schools Promote Wellness
The School District of Palm Beach County recently received a $360,000 grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to help kids and their parents eat right and get fit, which was made possible in part by matching funds from the Quantum Foundation that helped the district begin the grant process.
     
> Southwest Florida Community Foundation Increases Designated Endowment Fund Grants
The Southwest Florida Community Foundation, through its annual Designated Endowment Fund granting cycle, has awarded 47 grants totaling over $273,000 to nonprofits in its five-county service area - a 33% increase over last year.

FPN Meets With Haitian Ambassador

  FPN Meets With Haitian Ambassador
FPN representatives met with Haiti's ambassador to the United States, Raymond Joseph, in a small private meeting on Feb. 18 to hear the ambassador's firsthand assessment of Haiti's short- and long-term needs in the aftermath of the earthquake. FPN Vice President David Biemesderfer expressed to Ambassador Joseph the long-term commitment of Florida's philanthropic sector to help rebuild Haiti and to support Haitians living in Florida who have been impacted by the disaster, and shared FPN's summary of how Florida grantmakers have responded to the crisis.

   Three Florida Philanthropy Leaders Join Florida Philanthropic Network Board
At its meeting on Feb.10, FPN's board of directors elected three new members to three-year terms on the board:

Ian Smith, Senior Vice President and Chief Communications Officer for the Helios Education Foundation;

Giving in Florida    Florida Giving Likely to Stabilize in 2010 Following Two Years of Declines, New FPN Report Shows
Charitable giving by Florida's foundations and corporations totaled $1.43 billion in 2007, an increase of more than 32% from 2001, according to a new report by Florida Philanthropic Network. But due to the economic recession, the report estimates that foundation and corporate giving declined by about 3% in 2008 and by more in 2009, but is likely to stabilize or grow slightly in 2010.  Media coverage of the report included stories in the Florida Times-Union and the South Florida Business Journal.
 
FPN Holds Second Annual Statewide Summit on Philanthropy
More than 150 people from Florida's grantmaking field and other sectors gathered in Orlando on February 11-12 for FPN's second annual Statewide Summit on Philanthropy.  The event explored how foundations in the state are working in new ways to solve some of the state's most intractable problems in such areas as health care, education, workforce development and social services.  Funders also had the opportunity to network with others working on similar issues or having similar job functions.  Click above to access resources from Summit sessions and view Summit photos.

County Health Rankings
The University of Wisconsin's Population Health Institute and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation have released County Health Rankings, the first set of reports to rank the overall health of every county in all 50 states. The report rates Collier County as Florida's healthiest county and Union County as its least healthy county.
