Community Foundation of Sarasota County   Sarasota Community Foundation Awards 30 Grants to Celebrate 30th Anniversary
The Community Foundation of Sarasota County culminated its 30th anniversary celebration in November by announcing 30 BOOST capacity-building grants totaling more than $831,000 and a new grantmaking focus on helping improve nonprofit fundraising.
       
Hillsborough County School District   Gates Foundation Supports New Teacher Effectiveness Initiative in Hillsborough Schools
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has awarded $100 million to the Hillsborough County School District to support an ambitious new effort to improve teacher effectiveness. Over the next seven years, Hillsborough aims to use the funds, which it will match dollar for dollar, to transform the way it recruits, trains and retains high-quality teachers.
 
> Bank of America Supports Florida Nonprofit Leaders
Fourteen Florida nonprofits received $200,000 each from the Bank of America Charitable Foundation to participate in the Neighborhood Excellence Leadership Program with other nonprofit leaders from 45 communities in the U.S. and London.
     
> New Web Site Offers Detailed Portraits of Central Florida Nonprofits
The Community Foundation of Central Florida has launched a new Web site that gives the public a wide and deep look at more than 300 charitable organizations in Central Florida, with information on everything from a nonprofit’s management, governance and programs to its detailed finances.
     
> Knight Foundation Awards Infuse South Florida Arts Scene With New Funding
Emerging from 1,562 applications, 20 winners received $3.7 million in the 2009 Knight Arts Challenge, a community-wide contest by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation to find the best ideas for the South Florida arts.

Dade Community Foundation Report    Miami Nonprofits Report Growing Demand for Services, Declines in Funding
While 75% of Greater Miami nonprofits report an increased demand for their services, an equal share report their funding being down by 11% or more, according to the Dade Community Foundation’s new Nonprofit Economic Impact Survey Report. The report also shows that 45% of nonprofits had to lay off staff in 2009. Yet these groups maintain a resolve to keep up with demand for services - somehow. Download the report (PDF).
        
Pew Report   Florida Among 10 States in Fiscal Peril, New Pew Report Says
Florida is one of nine states, in addition to California, that is in serious fiscal peril due to the recession, according to a new report by the Pew Center on the States, "Beyond California: States in Fiscal Peril."  The report ranks Florida has having the seventh-worst fiscal outlook, and notes that "Florida's choices for bringing its ledger into balance are limited because it has no income taxes and its per-capita spending on education and social services is already low, so cuts are difficult to make." > Most Nonprofit Retirement Benefit Plans Under “Stress,” New Report Finds
Most nonprofits that offer retirement benefits to their employees report that their retirement plans are under stress, a new survey from the Johns Hopkins Listening Post Project finds. For those survey respondents offering defined benefit plans, 76% say their plans are under stress and 43% report that they are under severe or very severe stress.
       
> Federal Funding Helps Jacksonville Environmental Jobs Program
Federal stimulus dollars will fund free job training for Jacksonville residents in the booming field of environmental cleanup. Florida State College at Jacksonville has received $500,000 to help train at least 170 people. Jacksonville Youth Works, a local nonprofit, will recruit and screen applicants.
   
> The New Economic Model: Florida Nonprofits Learn to Live With Fewer Donations, More Seeking Services
The economic downturn has pushed central Florida nonprofits to reassess how they do business, a trend that's happening across the country.

Foundation Center Advisory    Decline in 2009 Foundation Giving Steeper Than Anticipated, New Survey Shows
A new research advisory from the Foundation Center suggests that U.S. foundation giving will decline by more than 10% in 2009, a bit closer to the high end of the range estimated by the center earlier this year, and that it will fall further in 2010.  Despite reduced resources, more than three-quarters of foundation survey respondents expect that the field of philanthropy will become more strategic as a result of having weathered the economic crisis. > Corporate Employees Remain Committed to Volunteering, Study Finds
Nearly 56% of corporate employees participate in volunteer events run by their employers, according to a new survey by LBG Associates and LBG Research Institute, and the second most common reason volunteers cited for their involvement was a concern that charities are suffering in the economic downturn. The majority of employees - 61% - said their interest in volunteering is the same as last year, while 27% are more motivated to volunteer now than a year ago.

PAI Report    High Expectations, High Opportunity for Foundations
What do engaged Americans expect of foundations?  A lot, according to a new report from the Philanthropy Awareness Initiative that is based on findings from a survey by Harris Interactive. In a time of economic uncertainty, these citizens, who make up 12% of the American adult population, are looking to foundations to find solutions to society's problems, speak up about their work and lessons learned, stay independent from government but accountable to the public, and take action to help the nation contain the fallout from a struggling economy.
