Florida Among 10 States in Fiscal Peril, New Pew Report Says
Florida is one of nine states, in addition to
California, that is in serious fiscal peril due to the
recession, according to a new report by the Pew Center on the States,
"Beyond California: States in Fiscal Peril." The report
ranks Florida has having the seventh-worst fiscal
outlook, and notes that "Florida's choices for bringing
its ledger into balance are limited because it has no
income taxes and its per-capita spending on education
and social services is already low, so cuts are
difficult to make."

Decline in 2009 Foundation Giving Steeper Than Anticipated, New Survey Shows
A new research advisory from the Foundation Center suggests that U.S. foundation giving will decline by more than 10% in 2009,
a bit closer to the high end of the range estimated by the center earlier this year, and that it will fall further in 2010. Despite reduced resources, more than three-quarters of foundation survey
respondents expect that the field of philanthropy will become more strategic as a result of having weathered the economic crisis.

High Expectations, High Opportunity
for Foundations
What do engaged Americans expect of foundations? A lot, according to a new report from the Philanthropy Awareness Initiative
that is based on findings from a survey by Harris Interactive. In a time of economic uncertainty, these citizens, who make up 12% of the American adult population, are looking to foundations to find solutions to society's problems, speak up about their work and lessons learned, stay independent
from government but accountable to the public, and take action to help the nation contain the fallout from a struggling economy.
