Eckerd Foundation   Foundations Urge Full Implementation of Fostering Connections Act
The Eckerd Family Foundation in Tampa is part of a nine-foundation coalition that has announced a nationwide effort to fully implement the Fostering Connections Act, the most comprehensive federal reforms to child welfare policy in over a decade, and has launched the Fostering Connections Resource Center.
       
Nonprofits First   Federal Grant Will Help Build Nonprofit Capacity in South Florida
The Department of Health and Human Services awarded a $498,857 grant to Nonprofits First of Boynton Beach to provide capacity building services for nonprofits that serve the most at-risk populations in South Florida. Eligible organizations can apply to receive training and services in leadership development, organizational development, program development and community engagement. > Southwest Florida Community Foundation Supports Local Nonprofits
The Southwest Florida Community Foundation in Fort Myers awarded over $370,000 in grants to 21 nonprofit organizations in the region through its Major Annual Grant Cycle.
     
> Florida Bar Foundation Launches New Program to Increase Pro Bono Services
The Florida Bar Foundation has launched a Pilot Pro Bono Grant Program to help legal aid programs across the state develop new or enhanced models for their pro bono activities. The pilot projects will be based on the findings of the foundation's 2008 study, which found that Florida lawyers don't lack the desire to provide pro bono legal services, they just lack the time.
     
> Gulf Coast Community Foundation Funds USF, Red Cross, Others
In its second round of grants focused exclusively on providing operating support for nonprofits, Gulf Coast Community Foundation of Venice awarded more than $839,000 to 20 local nonprofits. The largest grant was for $170,000 to the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee to improve the USF College of Business program delivery at the south Sarasota County education center.
      
> Tampa Bay Teachers Gain Real-World STEM Experience in Helios Foundation Program
Helios Education Foundation and Florida’s Technological Research and Development Authority recently completed the first year of a pilot program that provides secondary school teachers in the Tampa Bay area with six-week employment opportunities over the summer in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). > Community Foundation Leads in Helping Nonprofits "Go Green"
The Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties was the first nonprofit to be certified by GreenNonprofits.org, the new gold standard for nonprofits seeking to "go green."

Embrace Logo   Jacksonville Nonprofits Get More Ammo to Fight Childhood Obesity
Several nonprofit organizations in Jacksonville have more resources to support their efforts to reduce childhood obesity. As part of its statewide initiative, called Embrace a Healthy Florida, The Blue Foundation for a Healthy Florida announced 17 Healthy Kids, Healthy Jacksonville Community Grants to organizations that are tackling the health epidemic in the city.
 
> Health Foundation Grants to Help Older Adults Stay Healthy and Independent
Nonprofits in Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties will be able to help older adults stay healthy and independent by offering programs funded recently by the Health Foundation of South Florida. The foundation awarded more than $1 million in grants to 16 nonprofits as part of its Healthy Aging Regional Collaborative.
     
> Recession Slows Charitable Giving for Health Care
Philanthropic giving for health care in the United States grew a tepid 2.9% in 2008 - about half the growth rate in 2007 - according to a new report by the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy.

Floridia' Civic Health    Recession May Be Adding to Florida’s Civic Weakness
Florida's civic culture is in failing health, and the recession has only made the problem worse, a new study by the Florida Joint Center for Citizenship finds. Funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the survey found that the state ranks 46th in the nation in civic culture, 49th in volunteering, 48th in the percentage of citizens who have attended a public meeting, and 37th in the percentage of citizens who have worked with others to address a community issue. What’s worse, 70% of Floridians say they have cut back on civic activities in the past year. Download the report (PDF).
    
> Florida Groups Receive Stimulus Funds to Support Nonprofits
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services awarded $46 million to 84 government agencies and nonprofit intermediaries, including three in Florida, under a program to improve the ability of nonprofits to promote the economic recovery of people with low incomes. The program, the Strengthening Communities Fund, was created by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Florida recipients were the University of Central Florida ($1 million), LEAD Brevard ($249,915) and Broward County Board of County Commissioners ($218,150). View a list of grantees.
       
> Fundraising Strategies Adjust to Economic Realities
Golf tournaments, silent auctions and sit-down meals might still draw crowds together for a common benefit, but many Jacksonville nonprofit officials have started thinking outside the box to garner attention - and raise much-needed revenue for their causes.
       
> Study to Track How Stimulus Spending Affects Race, Poverty in Florida
Researchers from Ohio State, Florida International University and the Miami Workers Center will track racial biases of stimulus spending across four metropolitan regions in Florida - Jacksonville, Orlando, Tampa and Miami-Dade.

Michelle Fonseca   Michelle Fonseca Joins FPN Staff
Michelle Fonseca has been named FPN’s Administrative & Member Services Associate. She will provide key support for FPN's internal office operations and services to our members. Fonseca was previously an independent contractor providing administrative and graphic design support to such clients as the Symphony of the Americas Society of West Palm Beach and the Broward Partnership for the Homeless. She also worked as Marketing Coordinator for Easter Seals of South Florida. Community Foundation Investment Report    Community Foundation Assets Dropped in 2008
The assets of U.S. community foundations fell 27% during 2008, according to a new report from the Council on Foundations. Based on a survey of 200 community foundations, the 2008 Investment Performance and Practices of Community Foundations Report found that community foundations' equity exposure fell by nearly 7% in 2008 - the steepest decline since 1996. > Nonprofits Expect Fundraising Decline This Year, New Survey Shows
The nation's most successful fundraising organizations anticipate that giving will decline in 2009 by a median of 9%, according to a new survey by The Chronicle of Philanthropy.  Donations to the 400 top fundraising groups rose by 1% last year when adjusted for inflation.
     
> Income and Education Are Key Factors in Donor Motivations, New Report Finds
Contrary to longstanding perceptions, regional trends and values have less of an impact on donor motivation than income and education, a new report from the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University finds. Based on a survey of more than 10,000 households, the report could have implications for nonprofits’ fundraising messages.  Download the report (PDF).

Career Pathways    Career Pathways to Philanthropic Leadership 2009 Baseline Report
This new report from the Council on Foundations examines the professional and individual characteristics of foundation and grantmaking executives appointed during a five-year period (2004-2008). The report lends new insights into how leadership is chosen in the philanthropic sector and what leaders themselves say about the process. A look at 440 foundation leaders who entered their positions from 2004 to 2008, for example, found that almost 80% of them were hired from outside, as opposed to being promoted from within.  Download the report (PDF).
    
> Current Practices in Family Foundations
This new publication from the National Center for Family Philanthropy shares results of the first-ever random survey of practices in family foundations. It provides benchmarking information to help foundations assess their own practices with those of their peers.

> Dade Community Foundation’s Community Grants Program
The program provides grants though the foundation's unrestricted and field of interest funds to honor both the donors’ interests and address significant community issues.  Deadline: Nov. 16.
   
> The TK Foundation Youth Development Programs
The TK Foundation, a donor-advised fund of the Orange County Community Foundation, is interested in supporting youth development programs from around the nation that are meeting the needs of motivated disadvantaged youth ages 15-21 by preparing them for employment and careers that allow self-sufficiency. Grant requests may range from $50,000 - $500,000.  Funders can nominate up to two organizations for this grant, or agencies can self-nominate with the support of a funder.  Deadline: Dec. 15.
