Blackbaud Report Cover   Charitable Donations Dropped in 2008, Two Studies Show
Two new studies join a growing body of research showing that 2008 was not a good year for nonprofit fundraising.  The latest survey from the Association of Fundraising Professionals reveals that less than half of charities raised more money in 2008 than in 2007, a new low in the eight-year history of the survey.  And donations to 75 of the nation’s largest charities fell by a median of 3.3% in 2008, after rising by 3.1% in 2007, according to a new report by Blackbaud’s Target Analytics research division.

Obama Signing America Serve Act   President Signs National Service Bill; Issues Call to Volunteer
On April 21, President Obama signed the landmark Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act, which will greatly expand government national-service and volunteer programs. At the signing ceremony, Obama asked Americans to “stand up and play your part.” The new law is boosting interest in community service across the country, leading some to speculate whether it may usher in a new era of volunteerism:

> AmeriCorps Could Add to “Compassion Boom” of Volunteers in Florida

> National Service Act Could Help Spur Interest in Nonprofit “Encore” Careers

> Group Hopes to Renew Post-9/11 Spirit of Volunteerism

However, the nonprofit sector may have more work to do to take full advantage of this renewed spirit of volunteerism.  A new survey by Deloitte LLP shows that neither charities nor corporations are taking the right steps to help skilled people provide pro bono assistance to nonprofits.
