MEASURE OF AMERICA:
AMERICAN HUMAN DEVELOPMENT PROJECT
This report looks at how Americans fare in the areas of health, education and income, for the first time putting all three rankings together. They call the category "Human Development," and ranked the U.S. No. 12 among industrial nations. Despite the second-highest income in the world, despite being the world's No. 1 economy, and despite spending $5.2 billion a day on healthcare -- more than any other nation -- America landed behind 11 other countries in overall human development. One of the main problems? One in six Americans don't have health insurance. Click here for the report.

READY TO LEAD: NEXT GENERATION LEADERS SPEAK OUT
A skilled, committed, and diverse pool of next generation leaders would like to be nonprofit executive directors in the future, according to a national survey of nearly 6,000 next generation leaders. However, the survey also finds that there are significant barriers: work-life balance, insufficient life-long earning potential, lack of mentorship and overwhelming fundraising responsibilities which may prevent many younger nonprofit staff from becoming executives. The survey, Ready to Lead? Next Generation Leaders Speak Out, is the largest national survey to date of emerging nonprofit leaders and was produced by the Meyer Foundation in partnership with CompassPoint Nonprofit Services, The Annie E. Casey Foundation and Idealist.org. |

REPORT: F AS IN FAT: HOW OBESITY POLICIES ARE FAILING IN AMERICA, 2008
The rates of obesity in the United States have grown in 37 states. Trust for America's Health conducted a state-by-state analysis of adult obesity rates and reviewed some of the federal and state programs designed to combat the epidemic. Although many promising programs have emerged in communities to promote healthy eating and exercise, they are not preventing the spread of obesity. More than 25 percent of adults are obese in 28 states, while more than 20 percent of adults are obese in every state except Colorado. Moreover, not one state showed a decrease in numbers of obese people. The report's authors recommend that the federal government convene a partnership of state and local governments, businesses, communities and schools to implement a national strategy to tackle obesity.
