THE HIDDEN COSTS OF THE HOUSING CRISIS
The increasing housing burden, illustrated by the tip of the iceberg that is today's foreclosure crisis, poses a substantial threat to young children's odds of life success. Stable, affordable, decent housing can substantially boost young children's school, and life achievement, but rising costs put such homes increasingly out of reach for too many and will have ripple effects for decades to come. The full report from the Partnership for Economic Success will be available later this summer. To access this Issue Brief (PDF) click here. |

As highly valued as diversity may be as a societal ideal, questions remain as to how diligently the nonprofit sector has sought to achieve this goal in its own structure and operations. Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisor's new report, Philanthropy in a Changing Society: Achieving Effectiveness through Diversity (PDF) discusses the state of diversity in the philanthropic sector over the past 25 years.

JUST ANOTHER EMPEROR? THE MYTHS AND REALITIES OF PHILANTHROCAPITALISM

In Just Another Emperor: the Myths and Realities of Philanthrocapitalism, author Mike Edwards says: "A new movement is afoot that promises to save the world by revolutionizing philanthropy, making non-profit organizations operate like business, and creating new markets for goods and services that benefit society. Nick-named "philanthrocapitalism" for short, its supporters believe that business principles can be successfully combined with the search for social transformation." Despite its great potential, Edwards cautions, this movement is flawed in both its proposed means and its promised ends. It sees business methods as the answer to social problems, but offers little rigorous evidence or analysis to support this claim, and ignores strong evidence pointing in the opposite direction.
