Greetings!
Hello,
We recently had a bunch of fun playing for kids at the Placerita Junior High School in Newhall, CA.
This was to celebrate Black History and to introduce the kids to a different type of music. I'm always impressed with how good music from another era is STILL good for people no matter the age.
This theory held true at this event! The kids were dancing, laughing and singing. We're going to do more of these as it's great to see kids grow.
Cab Calloway |
 |
Cab Calloway was a consummate showman, singer, dancer and band leader.
He was born to middle class parents who quickly recognized his musical talents and got him into private lessons. As he grew older he became quite interested in jazz, despite their objections.
He later went on to substitute for Duke Ellington at the Cotton Club in Harlem. His shows were so popular, that he and Ellington shared the gig from then on.
Check out his classic "Minnie The Moocher" from this 1950 clip. The original song talked a bit about coke and opium, but this version is cleaned up.
Check out the joy and abandon that Cab and his band played with. That's Jazz!

Kids Having Fun! |
|
It was really cool to see how kids react to music that was written before their parents were born! The amazing thing is that everybody loves Duke Ellington, whether they know it or not.
Click the picture above to see more of how much fun we all had at that gig, while doing the great Duke classic "Don't Get Around Much Any More".
