Greetings!
Hello!
Where has the time gone?! It's "been a few"
since I sent one of these out. Hope you're fine.
On last Sunday we performed at the Whitefire
Theater in Los Angeles, backing up Ruby Hayes
and her wonderful tribute show to Bessie Smith.
She recently completed her one woman show
tribute to Bessie Smith and we were honored
to be selected as her backing band!
Attending the show was none other than the
legendary Linda Hopkins, who is a blues
singer extraordinaire who earlier brought
life to Bessie Smith's rich collection of
songs. Linda has been a mentor for Ruby for
years.

Bessie Smith |
 |
Bessie Smith was perhaps the greatest blues
singer who ever lived. She was lovingly
known as "The Empress of the Blues", as she
stood out as the best of her contemporaries.
During her life she was wildly popular and
sold millions of records. She wasn't just a
singer, although she would have been a legend
if that was all she did. She wrote songs
about drugs, sex,
love lost and gained and other topics, in a
way that was
powerfully real and broke the taboos of the day.
