Friendship Tree
After a winter in "dry dock" Steve Jensen's artwork "Friendship Tree" has returned to the Edmonds Waterfront Walkway where is was originally placed in 2004 to represent the enduring friendship between Edmonds and its Sister City Hekinan. The carved cedar sculpture was removed late last fall for maintenance work. Seattle artist Jensen is also creator of the "Crane" located outside of the Hekinan Japan City Hall. "Friendship Tree" was created in 2004 as a symbol of friendship between Edmonds and it's Sister City, Hekinan, Japan. It was designed by Jensen, incorporating drawings from students who had visited Japan, and carved by Jensen on the 12 ft, naturally fallen cedar. Jensen describes the images as follows: "The tree starts at the base with an abstract image of waves that moves into starfish, then into fish, and then into turtles, which are symbols of longevity. Next comes an iris, the symbol of Hekinan, and the work "friendship" in Japanese. Above are trees which go into the mountains. Next is the bird that flies in the clouds between the two sister cities, and on top is the sun which has been carved all the way through the tree so light can shine through the sculpture."
