Edmonds Arts 30+ Years
Founded in 1890, Edmonds has recently seen a number of its key sites and buildings turn 100 - e.g. the Beeson Building and the Edmonds Center for the Arts former Edmonds High School site in 2010, and the Carnegie Library building, now the Edmonds Historical Museum, celebrates 100 on February 17 during the Third Thursday Art Walk from 5-8 pm (118 5th Ave N). www.historicedmonds.org
Edmonds also has a number of arts organizations with impressive history:
Gallery North's 50th year was celebrated during the Third Thursday Art Walk on January 20. Gallery North, an Artist Cooperative, opened in 1961 and features monthly exhibits including sculpture, pottery, woodwork, glass work, baskets and jewelry created by artist members. Enter the Annual Miniature & Small Painting Show - details at www.gallery-north.com . They are open 7 days a week at 508 Main St.
Olympic Ballet Theatre's 30th season will be celebrated with the premiere of a new full-length production of the comedic ballet "Coppelia", choreographed and staged by Mara Vinson and Oleg Gorboulev. Performances: April 16 at 2:00 and 7:00 and April 17 at 3:00 at EdmondsCenter for the arts. For information and tickets call 425-774-7570 or visit www.olympicballet.com.
Edmonds Arts Commission's 35th anniversary was celebrated last summer with a gathering at the home of former Commissioner Edwina Baxter. About 30 past and present Commissioners were in attendance including Joan Swift and Dick Floyd, members of the original Arts Commission in 1975!
Other arts organizations over 30 include:
Driftwood Players - 53 years
Edmonds Arts Festival - 54 years
Cascade Symphony Orchestra - 49 years.
Congratulations to all these cultural organizations which contribute to making Edmonds such a special arts community! |

New Flower Basket Poles Several years ago the Arts Commission identified the need for new flower poles as an opportunity to create unique artist-made sculptural elements in our downtown. The placement of commissioned artwork on the new poles will eventually create an outdoor exhibit stretching along parts of Main Street and 5th Avenue. The first three "prototype" poles were installed this fall - two on Main St, outside the Frances Anderson Center and one on 5th Avenue N, just south of City Hall. The Edmonds Arts Festival Foundation funded the artwork for the first three poles. EAC commissioned Jean Whitesavage and Nick Lyle, who created and installed unique botanical art work for each pole (lily, kelp, and salmonberry flower) using forged and galvanized steel. The program for new poles with artwork will become part of the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Dept. Gift Catalog similar to the bench program. Plaques will be placed on each pole to commemorate or honor a person or organization as specified by the donor. For more information contact the Arts Office, 425-771-0228
