| The Director's Corner |
Dear Students and Colleagues: Happy Holidays! As I reflect upon my first five months here at NC-HCAP, I have to wonder: Where has the time gone? It seems like just yesterday I was taking the helm of this organization and now the holiday season is upon us. This is truly a time of reflection and thankfulness and my heart is full of gratitude. I'm grateful for the NC-HCAP team that has welcomed me and embraced the vision I have for this organization. I'm grateful for the students I see almost daily who are committed to becoming health care professionals and who are dedicated to improving the health disparities in our state. And I'm grateful for the collaborative spirit that thrives on this and other campuses statewide. It is your willingness to partner with us that allows us to expand our efforts in reaching students from kindergarten through graduate and health professional schools. To the individuals who have played a role in the successful implementation of our endeavor these past few months, please accept my heartfelt thanks. On behalf of the NC-HCAP team, I would like to thank all of you for your support in 2010. We look forward to continuing our efforts to ensure that our students are well-positioned to become health care providers in the future. I wish you all the happiest of holidays and look forward to seeing you at NC-HCAP events in the New Year! Warmest regards,
Dr. Roz
Rosalyn Beecham-Green, Ph.D. Director

NC-HCAP News
| NC-HCAP collaborates on a healthy living curriculum for local elementary school students
This semester, NC-HCAP has been collaborating with Dr. James H. Johnson, Kenan Distinguished Professor of Entrepreneurship & Strategy, Kenan-Flagler Business School and the Union Independent School in northeastern Durham to implement a community health curriculum to teach healthy living life skills and discuss various health careers to at-risk kindergarten through third grade students. NC-HCAP has partnered with faculty and staff in the UNC health professions schools and Counseling and Wellness Services, community organizations and civic-minded individuals to carry out this initiative and to introduce the students to health careers. NC-HCAP coordinates Deamonte Driver Dental Project's only North Carolina visit
We also collaborated with Dr. Robert Selden, a UNC graduate and alumnus of our SEP Program and the Medical Education Development (MED) Program, on the Deamonte Driver Dental Project (DDDP), a nationally recognized children's oral health initiative, to coordinate the DDDP Mobile Dental Unit's only stop in North Carolina. Private tours of the mobile unit were conducted to increase community awareness about the link between good oral health and good overall health and to encourage dentists and dental students to recommit to improving oral health in underserved communities.
The DDDP Mobile Dental Unit is a full service state-of-the-art clinic featuring three dental units, digital x-rays and other amenities. The Project was named in memory of a 12 year old boy from Prince George's County, Maryland who died in 2007 from untreated tooth decay. View more photos.

SEP 2011 is right around the corner! The holiday break is a great time to apply. The deadline to enter is March 1, so visit our Web site and start your online application today!
UNC Health Careers Club: DREAM. JOIN. ACHIEVE.
Between exhibiting at FallFest, collecting and packaging toiletries for Project Homeless Connect, decorating cookies with the residents of Orange Community Residence (Orange House) in remembrance of World AIDS Day, and serving as ushers at UNC home football and basketball games to raise funds for their projects, our health careers club has had a busy semester. There are over 60 dues-paying members involved in the club that meets bi-weekly. And while these activities help make them well-rounded citizens and help fulfill Carolina's (and NC-HCAP's) commitment to public service, none are as important as the enrichment activities available to them and other students pursuing health careers.
A deans panel was held on October 6 and afforded students the opportunity to network with deans from local health professions schools, to learn valuable information about the admissions process and strategies for becoming a competitive applicant and to ask questions of the panelists. View photos in our gallery.
Panelists: Brenda Mitchell, UNC Department of Allied Health Sciences; Dr. Aldridge Wilder, Jr., UNC School of Dentistry; Dr. David Bristol, NC State College of Veterinary Medicine; Lovest Alexander, Jr., Duke Physician Assistant Program; Dr. Brenda Armstrong, Duke University School of Medicine; Dr. Mitchell Prinstein, UNC Clinical Psychology Program; Dr. Robert Bashford, UNC School of Medicine; Che Smith, UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health; Pam Goldston, UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy; Dr. Rumay Alexander, UNC School of Nursing and Jennifer Brame, UNC School of Dentistry Dental Hygiene program.
A panel of UNC graduate students was also held in October. Panelists talked candidly and openly about the challenges of graduate school, shared how they prepared for standardized tests, balance life and academics, and were available to answer questions from the audience.
Participants: Dorian Brown, pharmacy student; Ejiofor Ezekwe, medical student; Elizabeth Perez, dental student; Brittaney Swift, nursing student; Sallie Wallace, student in speech and hearing division of the allied health department; Kiera Grier, dental hygiene student; and Callie Womble, student in public health.
November's meetings featured a summer program/internships panel and a test prep informational session.
On November 3, representatives from various summer enrichment/internship programs gave a brief overview of their programs and highlighted the benefits of participation, admissions processes, and more. This was followed by a Q&A session.
Panelists: NC-HCAP's own Paula Borden, SEP Program; Claudis Polk, MED Program; Tina Evans, Doula Program; Dr. Felicia Mebane, Summer Public Health Fellowhsip Program; and Vaughn Stewart, Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship and SMART Program.
For the club's last enrichment activity of the semester, Kaplan Test Prep facilitated a free seminar for students who will be taking the MCAT, DAT, GRE and PCAT for the first time and for those who need to retest to improve their score.
Many thanks to all the presenters who gave of their time and the students who attended.

HCAP: UNCP students perform health care internshipsby Scott Bigelow, UNC-P University and Community RelationsNine UNC Pembroke students performed Clinical Health Internships this summer through the North Carolina Health Career Access Program (HCAP). It was a diverse group of students who, like Nyeisha Bradley, dared to test uncharted waters. Bradley, whose ambition is to become a flight medic, worked on a Robeson County ambulance. "Every morning before going out, we checked the truck, medicines and equipment," she said. After the routines were performed, the excitement began. Bradley went everywhere and saw it all. "I saw a lot of Robeson County," she said. "You never know what you're going to get in this job. "You might get a call for one thing, and it turns out completely different," Bradley said. "You have to be ready." "The goal of the internships is to make students ready for careers in health care," said Sylvia Johnson, UNCP HCAP director. "This was a very diverse group that was exposed to a variety of experiences in health care," Johnson said. "An internship with the EMS and with an optometric clinic were firsts for our program." News from NC-HCAP at Elizabeth City State University

Tyler Thompson, a rising senior biology major in the School of Mathematics, Science and Technology at ECSU participated in the Kaplan PCAT program this past summer through an NC-HCAP progam. Tyler has been active with a number of enrichment programs sponsored by NC-HCAP, including the 2009 SEP Program. He has worked closely with the NC-HCAP office to remain focused on his goal of becoming a pharmacist, and with the mentoring of Dr. Lastasha Weeks this past semester, is more committed than ever to seeing this become a reality. Thompson was recently accepted into pharmacy school at Campbell University.
