The Director's Corner
It has been an honor and pleasure serving as interim director for NC-HCAP. To follow the outstanding leaders who have preceded me was a humbling, challenging and yet rewarding experience. It has had its bumps and bruises, but from every challenge has come a time for reflection, growth and promise.

I would like to thank Dr. Carol Tresolini, associate provost for academic initiatives, for the opportunity to serve in this capacity and for her demonstrated belief in me and continued commitment to the organization.

I also want to thank our partners, for without their support we would not have grown SEP to the largest class to date. I appreciate not only your financial contributions, but the time you have given to our students.

As I transition back to associate director and college outreach coordinator, it is with great pleasure that we welcome Dr. Rosalyn Beecham-Green to the HCAP family. She comes to us from Ross University School of Medicine in The Commonwealth of Dominica, West Indies and brings a plethora of experience working with underrepresented student populations. Please join me in welcoming her to the helm of NC-HCAP.

Again thank you for your support.

Respectfully,

Paula Borden, M.A.

NC-HCAP Welcomes New Director
Dr. Rosalyn Beecham-Green has been appointed director of NC-HCAP, effective July 7. Prior to joining NC-HCAP, Beecham-Green was the associate dean of student affairs at Ross University School of Medicine in The Commonwealth of Dominica, West Indies.

In collaboration with the NC-HCAP team, campus and external partners and other stakeholders, Beecham-Green plans to build upon existing programs by developing mechanisms to sustain relationships with program participants throughout the academic year. In time, she hopes to create a continuous pipeline of programs for underrepresented and economically disadvantaged students in the State of North Carolina from K-16 interested in health professions careers.

Beecham-Green earned her bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees from The University of Iowa. She succeeds Dr. Patrena Benton, who led NC-HCAP from 2006 to 2009.

NC-HCAP Bids Farewell to Pre-College Coordinator
After two years of working with the North Carolina Health Careers Access Program (NC-HCAP), Koyah Rivera resigned from her position as pre-college coordinator to pursue a graduate degree full time. Upon leaving NC-HCAP, she plans to pursue her master's in adult education at North Carolina A&T State University.

Rivera joined NC-HCAP in the spring of 2008. During her tenure, she planned and implemented pre-college outreach initiatives across North Carolina, including NC-HCAP's signature Health Careers Information and Enrichment (HCIE) workshops, and other customized workshops to educate students on the many opportunities in the health professions. Additionally, she was instrumental in planning and implementing Health Careers Day on the Hill, a program designed to expose high school students to various health careers and to provide access to college preparation information.

NC-HCAP Recognizes Former Director with the 2010 Cecil G. Sheps Leadership Award

NC-HCAP presented its 2010 Cecil G. Sheps Leadership Award to Dr. Carolyn M. Mayo, recognizing her commitment to students' success both in the classroom and in the community. The award presentation took place on July 9 at the SEP Program graduation celebration.

Mayo served as director at NC-HCAP from 1990-2006. During her 16 years with NC-HCAP, Mayo acquired external grant funds totaling $2.58 million, forged viable partnerships statewide and expanded pre-college and college initiatives with the addition of HCIE workshops and the NC-ARC Program.

Now as an associate professor at North Carolina A&T University in the division of speech pathology and audiology, she continues to push students to become involved with NC-HCAP and encourages them to pursue careers in the health professions.

Past recipients of the award were: the Honorable Eva Clayton, Dr. E. Lavonia Allison, Dr. Robert Thorpe, Mr. Larry Keith, Dr. Clay Simpson, the NC Area Health Education Centers Program, the UNC Office of Minority Affairs, the NC Office of Minority Health and Health Disparities, the UNC School of Dentistry, former UNC Chancellor James Moeser, the UNC Eshleman School of Pharmacy and Dr. Brenda E. Armstrong.

SEP Program Wrap Up:

2010 SEP Scholars Honored at Graduation Celebration

The SEP class of 2010 was honored at a graduation celebration on Friday, July 9 at the George Watts Hill Alumni Center at UNC. More than 200 guests, including scholars' family and friends, academic advisors and SEP program sponsors turned out for the event.

Keynote Address
Dr. Michael Zollicoffer delivered the keynote address at the graduation. The owner, director and physician of Pediatrics and Young Adult Medicine in Baltimore, gave an inspiring speech to the recent graduates. Zollicoffer used the story of his father, the fourth African-American to graduate from UNC School of Medicine and his own personal experiences to express the importance of never giving up on one's goals. He explained to the audience that failure is an option, but giving up is not.

Citing the importance of persistence and dedication, he referred to his father's ten year journey to receiving an education at UNC and his own personal struggle to remain motivated after failing his first year of medical school. "Failure ain't failure until you give up," said Zollicoffer.

Zollicoffer received his bachelor's degree in biology from the University of Maryland and then followed in his father's footsteps, graduating from the UNC School of Medicine.
