The Director's Corner

This truly is a bittersweet time in the academic year. Seniors are graduating and while we are joyfully celebrating with them, their presence will be dearly missed.  Many will be entering graduate and health professional programs across the country and will become the next Benjamin Carson, Charles Drew and Jocelyn Elders. For those students remaining in high school and college, they still have the opportunity to participate in pipeline programs, like SEP, that will help them gain the competitive edge they need for admission into graduate and health professional programs. Please encourage them into and along the pipeline.

We are excited to welcome the SEP class of 2010 to campus this weekend. Please stay tuned to learn about the scholars and their experiences. In addition to SEP updates, we will continue to keep you abreast of all the great things that are occurring at NC-HCAP.

NC-HCAP to host sessions at Future Leaders in Health Care Conference

NC-HCAP will host its annual health professions forum in conjunction with NC-AHEC's Future Leaders in Health Care Conference May 21-May 23 at Wake Forest University and Winston-Salem State University.

NC-HCAP's sessions will be Friday evening and will include its Inspirational Speakers in Science (ISIS) Lecture followed by a student panel presentation. Undergraduate students will share their academic experiences, goals and strategies for overcoming obstacles in college and health professional school.

The ISIS keynote address will be given by Ernest Grant, the nursing educator clinician and director of outreach and prevention for the North Carolina Jaycee Burn Center. Grant promotes continuing education on the immediate care of burns, wound care treatment modalities and the prevention of burn injuries. He serves on several national committees that establish the standards for the care of burns and has received numerous honors and awards for his work in the prevention of burn injuries and for his work with nursing students and the nursing profession. Grant recently completed a 6-year term on the board of directors of the American Nurses Association and is now president of the North Carolina Nurses Association.

Health Careers Club holds its recognition ceremony

At a recognition ceremony honoring the 2009 Health Careers Club members on Wednesday, April 21, the Patrena N. Benton Leadership Award was presented to Brittany Macon for her dedication and service to the club. The award honors a club member who has distinguished him/herself as an emerging leader of vision, service-mindedness, superior communication skills and organizational focus. As membership chairperson, Brittany exemplified these qualities as she volunteered tirelessly planning the Physician Assistant Panel presentation, preparing for Health on the Block and raising money for the club.

The three most active club members for the second semester of the 2009-2010 academic year were Elena Fenu, Jade Packer and Callie Womble.

Elena Fenu was named Member of the Year as she surpassed all other general body members with her continuing service and commitment.  Elena gave much of her time and dedication to attending club meetings, volunteering with the group and preparing for Health on the Block.
