| The Director's Corner |
During the past year, I have seen our Health Careers
Club members work hard to organize their 7th annual Health on the Block
community health fair. First created in 2002, Health on the Block is the club's signature
service program and is part of an ongoing effort to influence the community
to live a healthier lifestyle. Students worked diligently to recruit the
underserved by collaborating with local churches, homeless shelters, public
housing communities and community organizations.
I'm thrilled to report that Health on the Block was a huge success! More than 100 local residents
benefited from free health care screenings and other services. This
initiative allowed our members to directly interact with their community, and I am
proud of the commitment they demonstrated. By continuing Health on the Block, NC-HCAP is
exemplifying Carolina's
commitment to civic engagement as well as continuing to implement the vision of
NC-HCAP founder Dr. Cecil G. Sheps. Paula Borden Interim Director |

| Pre-college Initiatives | Rivera presents at the North Carolina State Leadership Conference
Koyah Rivera, NC-HCAP's pre-college coordinator, recently participated in a Health Career Expo at the Joseph
S. Koury Convention
Center in Greensboro.
As part of the NC-HOSA conference, Rivera presented, "So You Want to Go Into A Health Career:
Exploring Options, Preparing for Success," exposing
students to hundreds of different health career options and offering various tips
on how to reach success at the high school and collegiate level.
Rivera stressed the importance of students finding their passion, strengths, and abilities when
developing post-secondary plans and career goals. She also discussed the need for more minority
health care providers, the
importance of finding shadowing and volunteering opportunities, and the key role that communication and interpersonal skills
play in a health science student's development.

SEP adds Princeton Review NC-HCAP will now be hosting The Princeton Review twice a week during the SEP Program to prepare scholars for their professional/graduate school entrance exams. Princeton review will host a verbal accelerator course for the pre-medical students, math accelerator course for the pre-dental and pre-pharmacy students, and a GRE essentials course for the pre-graduate (research, allied health, physician assistant, etc.) students. We're excited about the addition of this new component and the impact it will make on the scholars' preparation.
