As we celebrate Black History
Month and reflect upon the numerous contributions made by African Americans, it
is imperative we remember there is still much work to be done. Legends such as Dr. Benjamin Carson, the
first to successfully separate Siamese twins joined at the back of the head,
Dr. Charles Drew, researcher in the field of blood transfusions who applied his
expertise in developing large-scale blood banks early in World War II, and Dr.
Jocelyn Elders, former vice admiral in the Public Health Service Commissioned Corps and the first African American appointed as surgeon general, all paved the way for today's health care professionals. These pioneers are only a few of
the many African Americans who are making great strides in health care. It is the goal of NC-HCAP to increase the
number of underrepresented minorities in this field. Through programs like the
NC-HCAP Health Careers Club, Health Careers Day on the Hill, Health Careers
Information and Enrichment (HCIE) Workshops and the Science Enrichment
Preparation (SEP) Program, we are making our mission a reality. NC-HCAP is in the process of
recruiting students for SEP 2010. We encourage
all of you to refer prospective students to the program, for they are the next
generation of health care professional leaders. Paula Borden Interim Director |

Rivera encourages students to "step it up"
Pre-college coordinator Koyah Rivera spoke to over 300 8th
grade students at Red Oak Middle School in Battleboro, NC
during a recent assembly.
Her talk focused on turning dreams into reality and
highlighted finding their true passion and letting that guide them towards a
career, doing more now than ever before to utilize their full potential in
school, and ignoring peer pressure and staying on course for success.
"It was awesome to have the opportunity to speak to the 8th
graders. It was around the time of the students choosing their high school
courses, so the timing was perfect to remind them of just how important those
course selections are in preparing for college entrance," shares Rivera.
