As 2009 comes to a conclusion, we pause to reflect on our accomplishments and the tasks ahead. NC-HCAP's successes include pre-college initiatives such as Health Careers Day on the Hill and Health Careers Information and Enrichment Workshop presentations encouraging elementary, middle and high school students to pursue health related careers. This year, more than 400 pre-college students attended Health Careers Day on the Hill and it is our goal to exceed that number next year. College outreach program successes include referring and placing students in various internships, providing shadowing opportunities based on their area of interest in health care and offering individual counseling and advising sessions. Additionally, despite the impact of the recession, the Science Enrichment Preparation (SEP) Program has continued to grow. It is with great appreciation that we again acknowledge the support of our sponsors: NC AHEC, UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, UNC School of Medicine Department of Allied Health Science and The North Carolina Translational and Clinical Sciences (TRaCS) Institute. Although we are proud of our successes, we realize that there is much work to be done. The NC-HCAP team looks forward to working with our students, partners and supporters in the upcoming year. Happy Holidays! Paula Borden Interim Director |

NC-HCAP's Health Careers Leadership Society holds induction ceremony at Sanderson High School
The Sanderson High School chapter of NC-HCAP's Health Careers Leadership Society inducted ten new members into its organization on Dec. 1, 2009. The Health Careers Leadership Society helps high school students with an interest in the health sciences move to the next level in their career and college planning process. Society members have the opportunity to expand health career interests through exposure to health professionals and various shadowing opportunities. Since the program is sponsored by NC-HCAP, members also have the opportunity to participate in pre-college preparation events sponsored on the UNC campus.
Prospective members of the society must demonstrate a strong interest in a future health profession, present evidence of leadership experience at school or in the community and maintain a strong, consistent academic record. The program assists students in maintaining and enhancing their academic performance and honing their leadership skills by promoting goal-setting, college planning and career exploration.

Health Careers Club Update
NC-HCAP's health careers club has closed out another great
semester. Many of the students volunteered in the community this
semester and made a significant contribution to the various projects
including planning and implementing activities for the Pediatric
Playroom at UNC Children's Hospital, collecting eyeglasses for the
homeless which were distributed at Project Homeless Connect, cooking
dinner for families at the Ronald McDonald House and collecting
non-perishable food items,
toiletries and gently used clothing for the Interfaith Council of
Social
Services.
The club celebrated all their
accomplishments at their holiday party on Dec.1, 2009. They also recognized the
general members who were most active in the club during the fall semester. Elena Fenu was recognized as
the member who devoted the most time and service to the club and its projects. Crystal McCullough and Roshana Ashe tied for second place, and Shannon Woodson
came in third.
