NC Health Careers Access Program

The Director's Corner
Research has shown that if the number of students pursuing health careers is to increase, students must be exposed t.o these careers prior to entering college. I worry that in the current state of our economy, fiscal resources will become even more limited for health professions educational pipeline programs. This would have severe consequences since there continues to be health professions work force shortages and these programs have proven to be effective in providing strong academic and enrichment preparation.

Despite the challenges, NC-HCAP is committed to increasing the health care work force, and is excited to share with you some new pre-college initiatives we have created to strengthen students' exposure. We welcome the opportunity to partner with all (including current health professional students and graduates) in assisting our state's youth with their academic pursuits.

NC-HCAP presents at 33rd annual NAMME conference

Koyah Rivera, pre-college outreach coordinator, and Paula Borden, associate director and college outreach coordinator, facilitated a workshop at the national NAMME conference in Arlington, VA last month. Their presentation highligted preparing for graduate/health professional school examinations (MCAT, DAT, GRE, etc.) as well as NC-HCAP's SEP Program. It was part of NAMME's College Student Development Program.

The conference allowed participants to network with colleagues from around the country, to attend interactive workshops, and to be a part of Legislative Day. Rivera and Borden met personally with North Carolina Congressmen David Price and Heath Schuler, and spoke with aides from other offices as well.

Pre-college Initiatives
NC-HCAP launches new Health Careers Leadership Society
NC-HCAP has partnered with Sanderson High School and Leesville Road High School to launch its first two Health Careers Leadership Society chapters. This outreach initiative is designed to introduce high school students to the various health professions and to assist them with their career and college planning. Additionally, students will have the opportunity for shadowing experiences and to attend pre-college events at UNC and other colleges around the state.

Career development coordinators Gwen Candada and Traci Claiborne (at Leesville and Sanderson, respectively) will serve as co-advisors with Koyah Rivera, NC-HCAP's pre-college coordinator. The two groups will hold their first meetings later this month.

Health Careers Day on "the Hill"

NC-HCAP's inaugural Health Careers Day on 'the Hill' will be held Saturday, October 18 from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Two hundred AHEC participants from across the state will converge on the UNC campus to hear from representatives from UNC's schools of medicine and pharmacy and the Department of Allied Health Sciences. The UNC admissions office and the Office of Multicultural Affairs also will present.
