| To the Friends of Abby's Closet ~
The countdown begins ... It is only 4 months until the 6th Annual Prom Gown Giveaway, scheduled for April 10-11, 2010 at our new location: DoubleTree Hotel - Lloyd Center.
Although we are busy with holiday plans, our Board and volunteers are already hard at work making plans for this year's event. We need your help to make it even bigger and better. As we near year-end, be sure to remember to donate any formal gowns you aren't going to wear again and consider making a cash contribution to Abby's Closet that can be used to purchase additional gowns or to help pay for the event. All donations are tax deductible and will directly benefit teens. |
| YOU ARE OUR VILLAGE |
|
A MESSAGE FROM OUR DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR, SUZANNE SHEPANEK:
My neighbor has a Christmas village of small, lighted ceramic houses and buildings she displays every December. It's full of memories, as each house was given to her over the years by her Dad, and she thinks of him and all they shared as she creates the yearly display. Reflection on the year gone by is hallmark of the Christmas season and so connected to the decorations and bustle.
Our Abby's Closet village has no buildings yet, but is full of energetic and dynamic people with giving hearts. So very much was accomplished this year, and nothing could happen without you, each and every one. Whether you donated a dress or a dollar, gave your time to sort gowns or gather them, reached out to schools or to girls in our community, you made room for us in your lives and pitched in again and again wherever, and whenever we needed you.
Thank you so much for all you have done this year to help Abby's Closet. You, our generous donors and wonderful volunteers are the precious treasures that make our village shine bright. |
| STUDENT ADVISORY BOARD |
|
This year's Abby's Closet Student Advisory Board is an energetic and enthusiastic group of local high school students. As members of the Student Advisory Board, they meet once a month to plan events that will help Abby's Closet achieve its goal of providing prom gowns to young women.
A Report from This Year's Board:
We are proud to be the 2009/2010 Abby's Closet Student Advisory Board. Most of us chose to volunteer for Abby's Closet because it

is not your typical charity and it benefits young women our age in our local communities. A prom dress might sound frivolous to some people, but it gives the young women who recieve them the opportunity to attend one of the quintessential high school events with confidence.
As Emily McNabb says, "Girls should feel beautiful on prom night." To help make that happen, each of us will hold a dress drive in our school and another Portland area high school this January and February. The more dresses we collect the better the chance that the young women attending the giveaway event will be able to find their dream prom gown. In addition to the dress drives we will be holding unique fundraisers at each of our high schools to help fund the Prom Gown Giveaway event. By doing our part to help we hope every high school student has the opportunity to create wonderful and lasting memories of her prom. We are so glad to be a part of such a great organization and community!

Scappoose High School senior Rebecca Bode chose Abby's Closet as her Senior Seminar project. Through posters throughout the community, talks with friends and donation site that she set up ( Dianna's Formal Affair), she collected a number of dresses for us.
Additionally, her mother, who works for Nike, located a seamstress who sewed ten new dresses for us!
We are pleased to say that Rebecca received a 98% on her project....thank you, Rebecca!
