Issue #11

Greetings!

It's that time of year when everything is changing: the weather gets cooler, leaves start to fall, and the Pumpkin Spice latte is back at Starbucks. And inside CYT, the flurry of activity is picking up speed for our fall shows: the warehouse has set pieces being built, props are flying off the shelves,  and costume mom's are sewing up a storm. Don't miss our exciting fall shows, you'll want to see every one!

Praying for Real Life Orphans
Sara Lepek is currently rehearsing in Kane's Jungle Book. Her mom sent us this note and we thought it was too great not to share!

Sara's Cast Pic for Jungle Book

We have been a part of CYT for 3 years now, and this is my daughters first time in a production.  She has been chosen as one of the Villagers in Jungle Book, and is so excited to be a part of the show.

A couple of weeks into rehearsal, I was out running errands andreceived a text from Sara with a photo of "her orphan" in Thailand, with his name and village.  She then sent me a photo of a hand wovenbracelet she received as a gift from the orphanage in Thailand. Tears filled my eyes, as my Sara's compasion for this boyshe has never met was just overflowing and she couldn't wait to sharethis with me!  We spent the afternoon talking about the Palaung HillTribe, and what it means to be an orphan.  We prayed for the familiesand children on the other side of the world.

Our director chose to work on a project that would help make the storyof a young orphan named Mowgli (in Jungle Book) real, and at the same time promote Christianity in our cast. They decided on"Pray for an Orphan"and it was THE perfect choice!  Sara continues towear her bracelet and to think of Lufuluabo Biata G from the KinshasaEast Orphan Home (DR Congo). Thank you for bringing another piece of God's message into our home.

10 Quick Questions

We caught up with one of our newest AC's, Christy Chapel to ask her 10 quick questions. Christy grew up in CYT, and has directed and taught classes for many years. Now she's excited to serve the parents of Kane county!

Christy (R) with her sister Bethany (L) & "Ursula" (C) from Little Mermaid

1. What is your favorite aspect of directing/teaching? Working with the kids and families and forming those relationships with them! It is so cool to see how God can unify a cast based on their mutual love of God and Theater!
2. Do you have a favorite show/musical? I love Newsies! That's a great one!!
3. How many shows have you directed/classes taught? Oh man..... thats a hard one. I think I have probably taught around 20 classes and have been on 5 directing teams!
4. Favorite food? Good food for you....... probably a really nice salad with chicken on it and all the fun toppings. Favorite junk food... candy! Definitely candy!
5. What musical should be written that doesn't already exist? A Day in the Life of a CYT Kid. You know, like High School Musical... only CYT!
6. What stands out to you in an audition? Confidence and a bright smile!
7. Who should play you in a movie? Reese Witherspoon. I just love her!
8. What book should all aspiring actors read? Um......
9. Guilty pleasure? Laying in bed all day a reading a good book!
I love the relationships and lifelong friendships that you build!

Are you a CYT Student interested in HYPE?!?
We are SO excited about the future of HYPE! (High School Youth Pursuing Excellence). We're in the process of clarifying what HYPE's goals and purposes should be. Our goal is to relaunch the program officially in January. When HYPE was started years ago the goal was to re-engage high school students and give some ownership of the program through serving. We've had some success with the model of keeping it open to student's defining goals and objectives. In fact, many programs across the country have vibrant HYPE programs. For some reason, the program has been hit or miss here and  we'd like to identify the core reason. Is it lack of
oversight? Lack of student interest? Also, what types of goals and
objectives would re-invigorate the program? Do we need stricter
critieria to participate? Does even need membership? What qualities
make for a good advisor? Any issues we need to be aware of moving
forward? Would HYPE be more successful here in Chicago if there were more clear goals and objectives?

We would love to hear your ideas/answers to these questions. If you are
on a HYPE team keep doing what you are doing. If you are interested in HYPE please contact us directly. Feel free to email any thoughts you would like to share at jparks@cytchicago.org
