New Tax Credit - Small Employers

If you have 25 or Fewer Employees:  New Tax Credit Available to Small Employers Who Provide Health Insurance Benefits in 2010

Do you qualify for the new tax credit that is available to small employers who provide health insurance benefits in 2010?  The new health care reform act creates a tax credit for small employers who provide health insurance for their employees.   Here is how you can tell if you are entitled to the credit:

1. Determine the total number of employees (not counting owners and family members)

     a. How many employees do you employ that work over 40 hours
        per week?
     b. Add to this the total number of part-time hours per year and
        divide by 2080.
     c. If the total of A + B is less than 25 go to step 2.

2. Calculate the average annual wages of your employees (not counting owners and family members).

     a. Divide the total average annual wages by the number of
         employees calculated in 1C.
     b. If the result is less than $50,000 go to step 3.

3. Do you pay at least 50% of your employees' single health insurance premiums?  If the answer is yes and you satisfied the tests in 1 and 2, you qualify for a tax credit.

4. The tax credit is equal to 35% of the EMPLOYER's payment for the medical plan.

If you have questions regarding the tax credit or how to cope with the new health care reform act contact your Health Insurance Carrier or your Tax Consultant.
