Cobra Subsidy Extention
|
Kim Silvers, Silvers HR, LLC
President
Obama signed H.R. 4851 the Continuing Extension Act, on April 15th. This law extends several federal unemployment compensation
provisions and the COBRA subsidy. What you'll see most immediately is the
extension of the 65% COBRA subsidy for employees who have been involuntarily
terminated. (An earlier extension allowed the subsidy through March 31,
2010.) The new law will be retroactive to March 31, 2010 and will cover all
involuntary terminations through May 31, 2010. The Act requires employers
to notify employees who were terminated since March 31, 2010 of their
eligibility.
We don't
believe this will be the last you'll hear of the COBRA subsidy extensions.
There is a bill currently before Congress to extend federal unemployment and
COBRA benefits through December 31, 2010. We'll keep you posted if this is
signed into law.
We encourage you to work with your insurance
broker or COBRA administrator on the details of the COBRA notification.
