2010 EDUCATION CONFERENCE

CIGA members returned from the 29^th Annual January 10-17, 2010 Conference at the beautiful Ritz Carlton in South Beach Miami Florida. We enjoyed record breaking temperatures (the lowest in 55 years) and yes, CIGA was there!

Jim Pelley, Laughter Works (www.laughterworks.com) kicked off our Education with "Social Media 101". Attendees were walked through the social medias available for promoting your business online including: Facebook; UTube; Twitter etc. Become a fan of CIGA by typing in California Independent Grocers Association on your Facebook account and view event photos and upcoming events.

Our next Conference presenter Dennis S. Brown (http://www.dennissbrown.com/index.html), writer and international speaker, shared his contagious insights as Mr. Attitude. "Change your attitude and change your life". Dennis believes "The only difference between A GOOD DAY & A BAD DAY is your ATTITUDE!"Ž He explains that positive attitude differs from positive speaking by simply one word--ACTION! In fact, he says that "attitude is feeling, belief, and passion, and if we stir up those ingredients in the bowl of life--oh how sweet our days will be!"

CIGA REMINDER

BEGINNING February 1 to April 30, 2010 you must post your Cal OSHA form 300A* (the Annual Summary of Work-Related Injuries and Illnesses) for 2009 work-related injuries and illnesses.

This posting is required even if no work-related injuries or illnesses occurred during the year.

EXEMPT EXCEPTIONS:

1. Employers with 10 or fewer employees are exempt

2. Companies classified in a low hazard Standard Industry Classification (SIC)

IF YOU ARE NOT EXEMPT:

Complete a Cal OSHA 300 form* (the "Log of Work-Related Injuries and Illnesses) then transfer the total number of incidents in each category listed to the "Summary" (form 300A).

California law requires employers to post the "Summary" form from February 1 to April 30 of the year following the year covered by the "Summary." It must be displayed in a conspicuous location where notices to employees are customarily posted. A copy of the "Summary" must also be made available to employees who move from worksite to worksite and employees who do not report to any fixed establishment on a regular basis.

At the end of the three-month period, the "Summary" should be taken down and kept on file for a period of five years. You are not required to send it to Cal OSHA.

Nominations

It's time to submit your nominations for the Retailer of the Year and Associate Member of the Year Awards for 2009.

Please submit your nominees with a brief resume of their achievements by going to CIGA's website www.ciga.org and fill out the form provided.

Deadline for nominations is: March 10, 2011.

CRITERIA: Nominees must be members in good standing and demonstrate leadership and dedication in their community, the industry, and CIGA.
