Jacksonville Kayak Fishing Classic, May 2-3
A wish for fish benefits Dignity U Wear!
Northeast Florida's online kayak fishing community, JaxKayakFishing.com, has announced plans for the world's largest kayak fishing tournament to be held in Jacksonville, FL this May 2-3. The 5th Annual Jacksonville Kayak Fishing Classic promotes kayak fishing in Jacksonville with a fun conservation- oriented format and raises funds for local children's and conservations charities such as Dignity U Wear and daniel. As part of the Dignity U Wear family of agencies, daniel is one of several social service agencies in Northeast FL, and just one of more than 300 agencies nationwide, that rely on Dignity U Wear as a resource to meet the needs of the children and families in their community; their programs are enhanced throughout the year by Dignity U Wear's ability to provide new, clean, size appropriate clothes.
Officials expect that more than 250 kayak anglers will target Redfish, Trout, and Flounder in a catch-photo-release format with more than $50,000 in prizes and gifts. Last year's Classic had a world's largest attendance of 282 paddlers with more than $50,000 in prizes and gifts. The premier eco-tourism event raised over $22,000 for charity. Extreme Makeover: Home Edition
DUW partners with ABC's Emmy winning show to clothe a deserving family in AL
Dignity U Wear contributed to the ABC hit TV show, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. Filmed in early February in Mobile, Alabama, the episode aired the evening of Easter Sunday, March 23rd. Dignity U Wear provided more than 230 pieces of clothing, with an estimated retail value of $10,000, to the Gaudets, a family struggling to rebuild in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. In keeping with the spirit of Dignity U Wear's mission, each of the jackets, pants, shirts, underwear - even shoes - provided met the specific size/ gender needs of each of the family's nine members. In this instance, Dignity U Wear was even able to provide clothing that addressed color blindness concerns. The items were hung in the closets of the bedrooms of the new home as it was being furnished and completed for the family.
Dignity U Wear has a history of serving families in Mobile, providing clothing to domestic violence victims and their children three times per year through the Stein Mart Partnership Program (see inset below) with Penelope House. In the state of Alabama, similar partnerships tackling poverty, foster care and literacy programs exist in Birmingham, Huntsville, Montgomery, Robertsdale and Tuscaloosa. And, Dignity U Wear's work with the Gaudet family extended its own outreach to families affected by 2005's devastating storm season - to date, over $6 million in clothing has been distributed to those affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Wilma in Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Florida.
Diane Korman, Senior Producer with the show, said that Extreme Makeover: Home Edition would be nothing without the volunteers that step up to help strangers in need. "It starts with our Builder, Heritage Homes of Mobile, who waived their fees and worked for free. Every nail, every stick of wood, every piece of furniture is donated. We recognize and appreciate community, where love and goodness is generated and contagious to the 20 million Americans who watch the show every week and then pay-it forward in their own neighborhoods. It just goes to show, when you ask people for help, companies like Dignity U Wear make the impossible possible. We cannot thank them enough." |

Spring Break students embrace a spirit of service
Ahh..."Spring Break." With it comes mental images of sunning on the beach, hanging out at the movie theatre, fishing, camping, or meeting up with friends.
Students from several colleges and faith groups around the U.S., however, determined Spring Break would be a time to give to others through volunteer service. These special groups converged on the Dignity U Wear distribution center in Jacksonville, FL this March to process brand new clothing donations - clothing that will make its way to agencies and communities around the country to serve children and families in need.
Students from University of North Carolina, Eastern Kentucky University, East Carolina University, and a church group from El Dorado, Arkansas sorted, sized, counted and boxed MANY new clothes. We are very grateful for their time and willingness to make spring break a time to provide "Brand New Clothes for a Brand New Life."

An Undie Sunday ● Undie Monday 2008 Update
US ● UM hits the road!!!
It's hard to believe that it's now just a memory, but Dignity U Wear's 3rd Annual Undie Sunday and Undie Monday campaign obviously had a lot of people "dropping their drawers" for the cause. While a few donations are still trickling in, our latest count brings the current total to 72,373 pieces!
Undie Sunday & Undie Monday began three years ago as a community drive to help us collect brand new children's underwear for kids and families in need in Northeast Florida and throughout the country. Businesses, faith groups, civic groups, schools and professional associations have participated each year, with new groups joining the effort each year. With this year's total, the generosity of participating groups and individuals has generated a combined total of more than 225,000 pieces of underwear!
Each year, the creativity of participating groups seems to get bigger and bigger. A highlight of the 2008 campaign was the "Undie 500," a road rally initiated by Sunshine Minis, a group of Mini Cooper owners/drivers. A group of 10 Minis took off from Jacksonville on the morning of Saturday, March 1st, with stops in Ocala, Tampa, Orlando, Jupiter (FL, not the planet), and Daytona on the 2-day trip. Along the way, they collected underwear for the campaign. Honorary Undie Sunday Undie Monday Chairperson, Richard Nunn, was on hand for the departure, helping to "decorate" some of the cute Mini's. Organizer and Sunshine Mini group member, Debbie Jeffries, tells us next year's event will be even bigger and better. We believe her!
While most of the Undie Sunday Undie Monday donations came from local Northeast Florida groups, we received donations from Oregon, New York City, and St. Louis this year, to name just a few.
Our deep appreciation and thanks to everyone who collected this year. And a special thanks to our sponsors, who helped us run and promote this terrific campaign: Stein Mart, WJXT-TV4, The Design Lounge, The Loop Pizza Grill restaurants and The Avenues Mall.
Clockwise from top right:
1.) Wachovia asks... 2.) Jacksonville's Children Commission joins DUW's effort to clothe children in need. 3.) The Mighty Minis!
4.) WJXT Channel 4's Richard Nunn (far left) joins the Sunshine Mini "Undie 500" Starter Team at kick-off! |
