I am not afraid of storms for I am learning how to sail my ship."
~ Louisa May Alcott
Efficiency Myths and the Sailing the Right Ship
Adjust your sails; it's time to ride the waves of your to-do list. It's already February, so you probably cleaned off your desk in December, backed up computer files and wrestled hard copies from your fingers so you could go "green." In January, you cut back your extraneous commitments so you could focus on the most essential tasks without distraction. Right?
The Myth of Efficiency can lead to mission drift. It can also lead to a false sense of security. How sure are you that you are on the right task, at the right time? Are you saving time on the right thing so you can spend more time on the other thing? Are you saving money on a project when, maybe, it should not be done at all? How has your best strategy paid off? How do your accomplishments help fulfill your mission? Are your principles compromised due to operational demands?
So how do you point the sails and ensure you are mission-bound? A mission review works wonders. If you have staff, it's a good use of time for staff to deliberate first. Work backwards. Describe what your constituents need most and for what result. What do they need that they don't know they need? Resist jargon and routine assumptions. In a perfect world, what would your organization do to put itself out of business because your goals were met? What does your organization do best that is also needed most? Have opportunities been passed by because of lack of creativity rather than lack of resources?
Now consider your current mission with a new perspective. Is it clear, compelling and inspiring? Does it have energy? What does it mean to each person on your staff? Capture key words that come to mind. Each step of this process should be embraced thoughtfully. When staff has initial recommendations, it's time to engage the board. Expect a little discomfort as sacred cows are discussed.
Taking time to schedule a mission review can pay off with well-placed resources. A strong sailboat ride points into the wind. Embrace the breeze while you refresh, refine, and renew. The reward is sailing the right ship to the right places for the right constituents using the right strategies.
Adjusting the sails,
