Leadership Stripes
Picture this: As you walk into the new year, pledge to see leadership strengths in every person you see.
Whether you are the board chair, CEO, lead program staff, worker-bee volunteer, one of a large team, or the best greeter at an event, you need leadership skills, and you probably have them. Different leadership examples are evident throughout history. Albert Einstein, Amelia Earhart, Spike Lee, and Mozart recognize new possibilities and see signs of coming change, invent innovative solutions to problems, and are/were able to challenge the status quo. Maya Angelou, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Shakespeare displayed the ability to teach, help people understand in new ways, incorporate the role of values, and a deep understanding of how others feel. On the other side of the scale, Susan B. Anthony, Plato, and J. Edgar Hoover were able to overlook flaws, work at a highly practical and detailed level, and articulate structured plans. Finally, the geniuses Marilyn Von Savant, Newton, Aristotle, and Hippocrates excelled at gathering facts and analyzing issues, working with numbers and precise measurements, and forming insightful theories. It's common to recognize different learning or personality styles or even to say, "I'm really a right-brain, holistic, creative person," or, "I'm a left-brain analytical type." However, true leadership skills may be disguised by a style strength. We have stereotypical impressions of what real leaders look like. In reality, all strengths are needed to move a major goal forward. A well-balanced and diverse team is proven to be the most successful. As respect and opportunities for each person's leadership strengths emerge, goals are more likely to be realized in high quality ways.
Saluting our gifts,
