"Duct tape is like the force; it has a light and dark side and it holds the universe together."
~ Oprah Winfrey
What Holds Your Universe Together?
It's a classic duct tape joke. Duct tape has miraculous properties, infinite uses, and fixes nearly everything within reach. It even comes in bright new colors giving it the ability to blend in almost seamlessly. But what actually holds your organizational universe together? Is it the person who answers the phones and knows each and every key donor and board member by voice? More importantly, does this person know something personal or otherwise important about each one? That's some powerful duct tape right inside your front door.
Who is the "duct tape" on your board? Is it the long-time board member who has served on every major committee, went off the board only because she reached her term limit, went on a task force and then back on the board? Is it the one who retired and was willing to tackle updating the bylaws and researching new accountability rules? The one who brings new supporters and partners to your organization, as naturally he breathes in and out? The one who shows up and asks vital questions after everyone else has settled back into their chairs? Which volunteer is full of special event ideas but also knows how to balance that approach compared to other ways to connect with your constituents?
There are always service-level volunteers whose passion, sincerity, jovial nature or kind-hearted smiles make everything flow. These are the award-worthy volunteers who would do the work even if no one noticed. And then there are the quiet ones. They may be the ones who cart in the cases of soda for the annual BBQ or the ones who type and clean and make phone calls to be sure the work gets done. There should be awards for the quiet ones.
Staff have duct tape affinities too. They range from the 20-year veteran to the youthful new kid-on-the-block. Each brings a special talent and sparkle that may or may not be fully realized. Who holds the staff together with a fresh sense of humor or a compassionate ear? Who knows the organization's history by heart?
In a sense, each player has some "duct-tape" qualities. Each board member, direct service or special event volunteer, and each staff person has an essential role. It would be a worthwhile exercise to take stock of each one's stand-out qualities. Compare them to the long-term organizational goals and maximize their value by being intentional about how they are treated, tasked, and take their places among the group. Tap "the Duct-tape force"! May the duct tape be with you,
