Greetings!

hummingbird feederI just put up my hummingbird feeder. It should have been up a couple months ago, but you know how it is with time - zip! it's gone!  With the advent of spring, lots of you planted gardens - both flower gardens and vegetable gardens. One of the most beautiful aspects of living in this part of the country is the extended growing season - it allows us to have fresh fruits and vegetables all year long, yeaaa!

One of the downsides of gardening though, are all the weeds. It doesn't matter if we're talking flowers or herbs or vegetables or fruit, at some point we're going to have to hoe, dig, trowel or spray to rid our gardens of those pesky weeds.

Weeds grow insidiously, sucking up all the space in a garden, spreading like a virus, working their way into every nook and cranny until, if left untended, they will choke out the very lovely produce we're trying to cultivate.

garden weedsOur lives are like that too. We get weeds. Like the weeds of the earth, life weeds are also insidious. They can permeate our consciousness, grow roots in our psyche and cause us to make poor life choices. They can challenge our self-esteem, convince us we are unworthy and can literally choke the happiness right out of our lives.

What do life weeds look like? Wow, they can come in so many forms. They can come in the form of toxic relationships and resentments and mentally living in the Past. They can come in the form of job dissatisfaction and grudges and gossip. In fact, life weeds are actually sown in the potting soil of negative thinking and unkind actions.

Ridding ourselves of life weeds is not as easy as eliminating earth weeds. While our earth garden relies on us to water and feed the ground, our mental garden is automatically aerating, watering and fostering the negative yet fertile environment life weeds need to thrive whether we want it to or not.

The worse our self-esteem, the bigger the weeds. The more poor life choices we make, the more drama we create, the bigger the weeds. The more unkind we are to ourselves and others, the more negativity that rebounds into our life.

dandelionIn fact, just like the perennial dandelion in our earth garden, life weeds are like a self-fulfilling prophesy of doom that recur year after year. If we expect our life to be small and drama filled and 'everything always goes wrong', then it will because our mind is a powerful gardener.

So how do we yank those life weeds and till a garden (life) that's full of happiness and good luck and a wealth of possibilities?

First, we have to recognize life weeds for what they are. Why our minds do this is way too esoteric for this newsletter, but if we can recognize the weeds, then perhaps we can begin taking the steps necessary to rid them from our life.

Second, we have to be proactive. The life weeds that materialize as drama often results from a lack of follow through and procrastination or otherwise ignoring the tasks that will prevent life weeds in the first place and then we misplace the blame which is the equivalent of over-watering our life weeds so they will flourish.

Self esteemFor example, when our children have a science project due in three months, but they don't even start on it until the day before the project needs to be turned in, then they've sewn life weeds. And when they fail because the project is incomplete or poorly done, and they blame the teacher instead of acknowledging that they were the source of the problem, then they've sewn more life weeds.

And when they get a bad attitude about school and life treating them poorly and they walk around victimized with a cloud over their heads because life is simply unfair and everything bad always happens to them, then they've sewn perennial life weeds. And the sad thing is, all of this could have been avoided by simply taking ownership and via proactive time management; working on the project a little each week until it was done.  Can you see how easily life weeds are sown?

Third, we need to examine carefully our relationships and the activities in our lives. Do they make us happy or are they draining our energy (weeds)? Life is too short to do things that cause us to feel bad or to be interacting with people unless they add to our lives in a positive way. Saying 'no' is the equivalent of a trowel or a hoe. Just say no and pluck those life weeds right out!

apple treeAnd finally, recognize that a life garden is a series of choices and the consequences of those choices. Be accountable. If you opt to take a given path, accept it. If it turns out to be the wrong path, make a change. Consciously strive to cultivate a happy and weed-free garden, not one full of negative and choking weeds.

As Bill Mayer, Baseball coach from 1892-1957 once said "Every thought is a seed. If you plant crab apples, don't count on harvesting Golden Delicious."

Weeding our mental garden is challenging, especially when the sprinklers break and the weeds grow rampant; it can feel overwhelming and scary and it may even seem not worth the effort because no matter how hard you try, it seems like the weeds are everywhere, reproducing faster than you can pull them.

Don't give up. Truly. Just like pulling weeds from your earth garden one at a time will eventually leave it weed-free; so too will this work for your mental garden. One step, one action, one choice toward the positive - again and again - it's all you need....

Our Favorite Things... The Tower Garden...

Tower GardenFor many of us condo dwellers, having a garden is just not feasible. Now, though, it is possible to have a beautiful garden anywhere - even on a patio or a balcony. Introducing the "Tower Garden".

The Tower Garden is a hydroponic, aeroponic and organic self-contained growing system that allows you to grow as many as 28 plants per pot with no soil, no weeds, and no bending.

Sound too good to be true? It almost is! This amazing Tower Garden allows you to grow your own Farmer's Market right in your backyard. And the best part is, you can't forget to water it because it is self-contained.

These lovely growing systems are perfect for children, the physically challenged and older adults who no longer have the desire or ability to tend to a full-fledged garden. They are perfect for homes with little growing space or seasonal homeowners who have little time to cultivate a big garden.  They are perfect, too, for the seasoned gardener who wants to increase the amount of fruits, herbs and vegetables they produce.

Tower Garden 2Even senior centers, shelters and recovery agencies could benefit from having a Tower Garden. It gives the residents something to do and provides nourishing, pesticide-free produce.

Join the Locavore Movement - a Locavore, by the way, is someone who prefers eating food produced locally and avoids any foods transported over long distances - If you like organic produce but don't like the high cost - A Tower Garden might be right for you!!

Short Term & Seasonal Rental - Updates...

Home Owner insuranceLast month we covered the huge topic of short term and seasonal rentals.  One of our faithful readers generously pointed out that we omitted the subject of insurance.  Homeowners who rent seasonally may want to check with their insurance carrier regarding coverage.

The traditional insurance market doesn't cover seasonal rentals so you may need to obtain additional coverage to protect yourself from an uninsured claim.  Happy Renting!!

Rent by owner

Thank you Ellen for reminding us about this very important topic!

And please don't forget, Executive Errands is experienced with rental properties and can assist your 'by owner' rentals to insure your guests have a great stay and your property is properly cared for.  When you need someone local and on-call, we are your go to resource!

Special Projects....

food drive posterIn the last month we've been assisting several communities with FIND food bank drives.  In particular we are concerned about the amount of fruit being thrown away this time of year but we're also concerned with the amount of food being discarded by seasonal homeowners who are just now leaving.

Many managed communities already have fruit collection programs coordinated with FIND and Hidden Harvest.  Others though, may not.  If you see a lot of fruit in your own yard or that of your neighbor's yards and it's too much for you to consume, please consider collecting it and donating it all to one of those two worthy agencies.

Did you know FIND feeds 80,000 people PER MONTH here in the Coachella Valley.  Bless them for the work they do!  If you have any non-perishable foods to donate, and if you don't have time to get it to FIND, please give us a call and we'll either pick it up or coordinate a pickup so your food can help someone sleep on a full stomach tonight.

Thank you in advance for your generosity!

Building Relationships...

CRMThe one thing that makes us happiest is getting new clients or referrals from existing clients. Getting new clients is especially sweet when they have been working with us for years, but in a distant way.

What we mean by that is: We have two business models. On the one hand we offer Concierge Services. We do personal services, absentee home checks, run errands, assist with laundry, shopping, home office work - we've even re-written letters for those who have less than a commanding grip of the English language. Basically we'll do anything to free up your life as long as it is legal and kind.

On the other hand we have a large network of licensed, insured and local companies who support all the other services we offer. Oftentimes someone will call and ask for a plumber or a handyman or an electrician. Maybe they need their slider fixed or have a roof leak. Sometimes they need a housekeeper or to have their blinds cleaned. The request list is endless!

When people call for our network services, we always ask "would you like us to handle this or would you prefer a referral?" When they want a referral, we lose the opportunity to directly build a relationship with that person, so in effect, while they are working with us, it is in a distant way.

loyalty circleWe do add them to this newsletter distribution and we do find that most homeowners come back to us several times over the course of a few years. Then, suddenly, we'll get a call and one of these homeowners will say 'we want to use your absentee home check services'.

Every time that happens it is a thrill. Why? Because we built credibility with these clients from afar. Each of them tells us they were exceptionally happy with the vendors we provided. They tell us they like our newsletter message and the way we do business and now they are ready to entrust the care of their home to us.

There are no adequate words to explain how rewarding that cycle is. When you can build a relationship without ever meeting someone...... wow...... like we said, speechless....

No matter what you need, we'll do our best to provide or facilitate it. And if for some unfathomable reason we can't support a request, we will find someone for you who can.

Executive Errands is so very proud to be your Concierge and Lifestyle Management company.

Charitable Updates...

HeroesOn May 5th, we're supporting Heroes in Recovery, a 6K run/walk event to be held in Palm Springs.  The event starts and finishes at the Palm Springs Art Museum.

Heroes in Recovery celebrates the heroic efforts of those involved in fostering a society where people can seek the addiction and mental health help they need without feeling ashamed or isolated.  Nobody takes the road to recovery alone and we're hoping Heroes in Recovery will help raise public awareness so more people will seek the help they need.

DreamsThis inaugural event is being hosted by Foundations Recovery Network (FRN) out of Nashville. FRN is the parent company for Michael's House in Palm Springs.  As announced in a previous newsletter, Executive Errands provides concierge services for Michael's House and they are aware of the volunteer work we do for Soroptimist House of Hope.

Therefore, when FRN decided to do the Heroes in Recovery event and they were looking for a local recovery agency who might benefit from the proceeds, they remembered Soroptimist House of Hope (SHOH).  Soroptimist House of Hope has been selected as the beneficiary of this event.  FRN plans to make Heroes in Recovery a yearly signature fundraising event so we need to help it be successful this first year!

SHOH 30We are looking for health and wellness vendors who would like to display at this event (at no charge) and we're looking for sponsors to donate 'in kind' services and products.

We're also encouraging companies to walk together - our realtor friends, our business associates, other charity groups and other Soroptimist clubs.  Let's all do what we can for Heroes in Recovery and Soroptimist House of Hope!

If you'd like to run or walk in Heroes in Recovery 6K, please sign up today at www.heroesinrecovery6k.com
We are also accepting same day registrations, but would appreciate an advance registration.

luck and opportunityWhy is it that some people are constantly victimized and bad things always seem to happen to them whereas others seem to be lucky in everything they do? Well, let's set one thing straight right up front: We make our own luck.

Yes, I do believe that keeping a positive frame of mind is the path to a better life, but it is the ability to continually put one foot in front of the other, to follow an action plan designed to help us achieve whatever goals we set, to stay present in the moment and the ability to expediently handle life's little challenges that creates the illusion of 'luck'.

We must do the work. That's the key. No one owes us anything. And believe me; nothing comes to us without first putting forth the effort. Even lottery winners had to get up off their butt and go purchase a ticket.

Lately, much of our charitable and community activities are centered around alcohol, drug and mental illness recovery programs. Why? I don't know. I've never used drugs and don't drink. Still, we are being drawn into the world of recovery and the one thing that stands out for me is AA's 'one step at a time' program.

Thank positive weedsAA's philosophy is true in all of aspects of life. One step. One more step. Keep moving forward.

When you use a garden as a metaphor for life, it is easy to imagine life weeds crawling into the corners of our minds, choking out all the good and dragging us both emotionally and physically into a deep morass of dark thoughts, bad decisions and "poor me's".

But it doesn't have to be that way. Our minds are incredibly powerful. Look for the opportunity in every challenge. Search for the options in every situation. Learn from the bad decisions and celebrate the good ones.

Above all else, be kind to yourself. Give yourself a break. If you have to, dump the hoe and trowel and get out the rototiller. You might have to start that garden over from scratch but the positive seeds you cultivate now will become beautiful produce indeed.... And a happier life is sure to be yours...

Until June, let me leave you with these two thoughts:

"I always plucked a thistle and planted a flower where I thought a flower would grow"  ~Abraham Lincoln

"Now 'tis spring, and weeds are shallow-rooted;
Suffer them now and they'll o'ergrow the garden."...William Shakespeare, Henry IV
