Greetings!

write a bookI am planning to write a book.  I know, that seems overly ambitious, doesn't it?  On the plus side, the outline was done several years ago for a proposed set of mentor workshops. On the minus side, I had planned to start this effort two months ago and yet it sits untouched.

What kind of book is it?  Well, mostly it is going to be a 'how to' for the average Joe who wants to start his (or her) own business. But rather than rehash the same old tired rhetoric, I want to approach this from an entirely different perspective.

I don't want to give the whole thing away, but the power of our minds will figure prominently.  All too often people defeat themselves by allowing negativity or destructive (or even paralyzing) thoughts to permeate their consciousness.

Why is it that human beings seem to focus on the part of our brain that wants to inhibit our personal growth?  We worry, we fret, we conjure up all kinds of disastrous scenarios and worst of all, we make assumptions about the actions of others.

We have no earthly idea what someone else is thinking or planning.  And all too often we find our assumptions are incorrect, but long before we determine the fallacy of our thoughts we've already wasted an exorbitant amount of time worrying, fretting and making more assumptions.  It is a truly vicious cycle.

MeditationHave you ever tried to quiet your mind?  That's a slick trick.  Meditation is intended to do just that - silence the chatter that is ever present.  Personally, I have difficulty with meditation but understand its value and thus am attempting to master the process.

However, it is possible to quiet your mind without meditation.  Hypnosis has been known to work and you can also work to consciously shut off the noise.  When you can quiet your mind, you'll find a deep calm and tranquility come over you.  It is such a relief not to have all that noise clanging around - especially when it's the negative chatter you stop.

Better still, if you can consciously recognize when you're making assumptions and STOP that... you'll find your life improving enormously.

I can't adequately express how much better your life will be if you can make that one small change - stop making assumptions.  Already this past month I deleted numerous emails before hitting 'send' because they were based on assumptions rather than fact.

I'm simply waiting to see if the other party (or parties as the case may be) will contact me about whatever it is they're thinking.  If they don't, well, then the issue(s) most likely wasn't important.

Key to HappinessCan you imagine how wonderful the world would be if we all ended up halting the assumption making process?  In many cases we'd never address a particular issue at all and then, glory be!, then we've avoided potential conflict, potential misunderstandings and the ever present potential for hurt feelings.  Wouldn't that be fantastic?

There are several keys to success and happiness in this life.  Two of them are to stop making assumptions and to ignore (stop or otherwise limit) your brain chatter.

These keys sound simple, but each is a challenging task.  However, like everything worth having in life, the benefit far outweighs the effort. That's a bit like the book writing ambition:  It is going to take a herculean effort, but in the end to actually have a book published will be an amazing accomplishment.

End of Season Information....

Plan FirstIt's that time again, when our clients begin planning their departure from their winter homes.  So many things to consider!  The following checklist may help make leaving easier:

  1. Be sure to notify Executive Errands of your planned schedule for the coming year (or as far out as you know).  Having advanced knowledge of your departures and arrivals helps us properly address the needs of your home.
  2. Have you changed your door locks or security alarm code?  If so, we need to know and may need new keys as applicable.
  3. Has anything changed at your home?  Did you add a golf cart or an automobile that will be staying throughout the year?  Did you get a new appliance that requires special attention?  Do you need your patio covers or cushions replaced before the sun rots them completely away?

4. key holderHas your 'authorized key holder' list changed?  We need to know who has access to your home.

  1. 5. Have you changed your billing or contact information?  If so, we need to know that too.
  2. 6. Which home maintenance services do you need before the heat of summer gets here?  AC service? Roof inspection for loose tiles or rodent access points? Pest control service? Pool equipment checks or upgrades?

7. If you'd like home remodeling done over the summer, now is the time for us to get the quotes and scheduling in place before you go.

8. Are there any routine maintenance schedule changes?  For example:  Where we've been doing housekeeping twice monthly, should that go to once monthly?  Where pest control was quarterly during the winter, should it be monthly for summer? Do you need any new service providers (pool or housekeeping or windows, Etc).

9. Have you changed your position on summer thermostat or water heater settings? If so, now is the time to tell us.

10. Is there anything being left that should go to charity or which should be otherwise disposed?

referral heartThese are the primary 'end of season' questions we ask.  When you're ready, we can set up a quick meeting to update your client profile (or you can call or email any updates) and we'll be all set for another summer of caring for your home like it was our own.

And don't forget, if you've made new friends during this winter season, please refer Executive Errands for affordable absentee home care.  Despite all the burglaries in and out of managed communities this last year, only one of our homes was breached and we interrupted the intruders so loss was minimized.

While we can't promise to prevent theft, vandalism, or damages, we can certainly identify them at the earliest possible opportunity.

Executive Errands is proud to be your Concierge and Lifestyle Management service.

March in History...Fun Facts & Trivia

ColluseumFor some reason, we've been on a calendar kick lately, wondering about the significance of varying calendar events or how the calendar came into being.

According to the Roman calendar which was allegedly created by Romulus when Rome was founded around 753 BC, the first month of the year was Martius, which is now known as March.  The total year lasted for 304 days. An additional number of winter days, reckoned between the end of December and the beginning of the following March, were not assigned to any month.

The actual months at the time were:

Calendar of Romulus

Martius (31 days)

Aprilis (30 days)

Maius (31 days)

Iunius (30 days)

Quintilis (31 days)

Sextilis (30 days)

September (30 days)

October (31 days)

November (30 days)

December (30 days)

Later of course, and in way too much confusion to go into here, the calendar changed multiple times until it settled to where it is today, with January as the first month.  March is the month when Winter ends and Spring begins.

springtime hare

The onset of Spring in the Northern half of the world is usually March 21st when the sun is directly over the equator.

March is also the month when the animals end their hibernation and many plants come to life again. The sap flows in the trees, and the buds begin to show up. Bears, woodchucks, and chipmunks leave their hibernating spots.  It's all very Disney-esque.

Money & Time Saving Apps....

shazamWhether it's age or just me, I can never remember the names of songs or music artists. I hear songs I love but when it comes time to add them to my iPod, suddenly I'm scratching my head trying to think of whatever it was.

Now that is no longer a problem with Shazam, the fourth most downloaded app of all time. Shazam will identify music for you, it will help you learn the lyrics, it will alert you when an artist has a new album coming out and you can use it even when you don't have a signal.

This app is like magic! It has the uncanny ability to recognize a music track and tell you everything about it. AND it works with television programs, commercials and sporting telecasts.

Shazam is available for both iPhone and iPad and it is a free app; however you will need to pay a small fee to upgrade in order to eliminate pesky banner ads and to receive Shazam recommendations.

New Features....

As many of you know, Executive Errands is one of the only Concierge companies performing home inspections via an online application we had created specifically for our use.

house checkThis month we enhanced our Home Access policy to use this form for any visit to your home.  Reasons we might access your home?  Absentee Home Inspections, to complete a task (i.e. laundry), to provide access for service providers, or for any number of errands.

We want you to know when we are in your home.  Using the home inspection form to note the access will keep you fully updated.  Please be sure to check the form carefully because depending on the task, the home inspection form may be only partially complete.

When we do an absentee home check, the form will be more fully complete.  When we use it to record other access, there may only be one or two areas filled in.  These forms are a part of our database records and live there indefinitely so there is no sense of urgency for your review; but they are available when you want them.

We offer full transparency to our clients - for hours used, for tasks completed, for access to your home.

Charitable Updates...

Dancing With Our StarsWE WON!!  Can you believe it?  Yes, I'm talking about the Dancing With Our Stars charity event this past February 12th at Agua Caliente Resort & Casino.

Many of you already know we won because it was all over our Facebook page (and if you haven't seen that, then you need to 'Like' us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/executiveerrands).  What an adventure!

We started practicing for the DWOS event in November.  Twice a week, up to three hours per practice until January; then we started daily practices from one to two hours each day.  All in all we rehearsed a total of about 80 hours.

For the first time in years my hips didn't hurt and I actually lost a pant size - woohoo!  My lungs however, gave me fits, but we got through it.  Dancing is hard work!  And oh, so much fun!

SHOH 30Despite all the practice and preparation, the final rehearsal on the day of the event was a disaster.  We couldn't hit our marks, everything felt awkward and I for one was near tears.  I rarely mind making a fool out of myself, but the last thing we wanted to do was reflect poorly on Soroptimist House of Hope, the beneficiary of our fundraising efforts.

In the end, my fantastic and charismatic partner, Gary Butler, owner of Asphalt MD's and I had an absolutely smashing good time!  Everybody said 'bad rehearsal, good performance' and that's how it turned out.

We won first place in the event, beating out 11 other charities by raising the most money, a gross total of nearly $6000.  Then we won Audience Favorite too - how incredible is that?  It was surreal.   When they called our name for Audience Favorite I remember thinking, wow, this must be how it feels to win an Oscar!  Gary and I smiled for days.  It was so fantastic!

I already miss the dance practice and need to sign up for either a dancing class or Zumba to help keep these hips flexible.  In the meantime, thank you all so much for supporting Soroptimist House of Hope and for supporting both me and Gary as we danced our way into DWOS history.  Your generosity is very much appreciated!

A Sweet St. Patrick's Day Treat...

HSPDAbout a hundred years ago, when I worked in private industry, I had a colleague who was full blooded Irish and each St. Patrick's Day his wife sent in Irish Soda Bread.

It is a wonderful treat that is oh so good right out of the oven.  My favorite thing about Irish Soda Bread is that it isn't overly sweet.  For your enjoyment, here is a traditional Irish Soda Bread recipe you can whip up as muffins.  These freeze well too so you can make a bunch and pull them out to reheat for a quick breakfast or late night treat.

Irish Soda Bread Muffins

Yield: 12 regular-sized muffins or 5 large

Prep Time: 25 min

Cook Time: 20 min

Ingredients:

2 cups all-purpose flour
3 Tablespoons granulated white sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup salted butter
1 cup buttermilk (low fat is fine)
1 large egg, beaten
3/4 cup currants (note: I prefer raisins over currants but both work fine)

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 375°F. Spray small muffin tins or large muffin tins with nonstick spray.

Irish soda bread2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. With pastry cutter or two knives used scissors fashion, cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. (You can also do this part in a food processor and let the blades mix the flour & butter together). In a small bowl, stir together buttermilk and egg until blended. Add buttermilk mixture to dry ingredients and stir to combine. Stir in currants (or raisins).

3. Spoon batter into prepared muffin cups. Bake 20 to 25 minutes (longer for the larger muffins), or until cake tester inserted in center of one muffin comes out clean.

4. Remove muffin tin or tins to wire rack. Cool 5 minutes before removing muffins from cups; finish cooling on rack. Serve warm or cool completely and store muffins in an airtight container at room temperature.

Tips:

--Try using 1 cup of white flour and 1 cup of wheat flour- yum!
--Try subbing raspberries and blueberries for the currants

Offer these tasty little muffins at your next St. Patrick's Day party!  Executive Errands, 760.898.9604 www.executive-errands.com

Over achieverSometimes I feel like I need to apologize for being an over-achiever.  Actually, I don't feel like an over-achiever, but often people say to me 'wow, do you ever sleep?' and then I can feel myself going on the defensive.  The answer to that question, by the way, is of course, no.  (Just kidding)

Here's a secret:  Until I was 40, all I did was work and raise my kids.  And my kids might even take issue with that and say all I did was work.  It wasn't until 40 that I realized 'hey, what kind of mark am I going to leave on the world?'

I was reluctant to step outside my comfort zone and wildly afraid to try anything new.  Eventually and with a huge amount of anxiety, I finally did - I started teaching adult continuing education courses at Cal State Northridge.

That was a huge undertaking.  Just to become an instructor took nearly two years of monitoring other teachers and leading Train the Trainer seminars and being mentored in effective facilitation.

Then there was all the class prep, three hours of teaching per class, standing up in front of an eager audience, the challenge to convert dry class information into relevant work/life metaphors.  It was a daunting exercise.

accomplishmentOnce I mastered it - and FYI, I ended up teaching for two and a half years - I wanted to do more.  It became an obsession to do things that terrified me because then you feel alive.  Most of them were not crazy adrenalin-inducing scary things, but they were activities that scare ME.  So little by little I've added some really cool things to my 'life resume'.

The Dancing With Our Stars experience is the latest to make that list.  It was terrifying waiting behind the curtain, watching the dancers who came before us, waiting our turn.  It was especially terrifying because of the poor rehearsal, but once we stepped out into those lights all the fear disappeared and we just did what we practiced.  It was too late for fear so why not just have fun?

That's how I've been living for the last 14 years - embracing new opportunities, especially those that thrust me out of my comfort zone and every day I work diligently to silence the chatter in my mind.

dont thinkThis 'no more assumptions' philosophy is new in the last few months but it is already proving to be an exciting and rewarding way to approach life.  You know, there is a saying that goes 'you don't have to accept every argument you're invited to'.  When you refuse to make assumptions, arguments melt away.

Yes, I'm human and sometimes my ego gets in the way and I forget my new philosophy and then I find myself embroiled in a negative and unproductive volley.  But those encounters are thankfully becoming fewer and fewer in my life.

So my newest endeavor, to write a book, scares the heck out of me.  It's a huge commitment, but sharing it with all of you means I've released the intention out into the Universe and I know you'll all hold me accountable.  I better get to writing!
