Greetings!
Do you know what the most common day of the year is for birthdays? It's October 5th. That's because October 5th is exactly nine months (gestationally speaking) after New Year's Eve. Apparently there's quite a bit of celebrating on New Year's, hmmm?
December is my birthday month and while most people rue having a birthday in December, I rejoice it! My birthday comes two weeks after Thanksgiving when everyone is just itching to buy gifts and two weeks before Christmas (when everyone is tired of buying gifts). Gotta love it!
The very best gifts though are those where someone listened to you and/or where they made an effort.
One of my most favorite gifts is a simple vase I got for Mother's day. It isn't the vase itself. It was the fact my daughter and I were walking by a store one day, about six months before Mother's Day, and we saw that vase in the window. I said 'oh look, that's so cute'. She listened. She remembered. Six months later she gave me the vase. That was at least fifteen years ago and I still have it sitting on the counter in my hallway and every time I walk by it, I think about her thoughtfulness.
Gifts just for gifting sake are empty and meaningless, but when you listen to people, really listen, often you can create an 'oh wow' gift that will be remembered long after the gifting itself and may well bring tears to the eyes of even the most stoic person.
All too often though, shopping for gifts can be quite stressful. And the commercialism of the holiday season adds to that stress. This year there are just three shopping weekends before Christmas which also adds to the sense of urgency to get it all done.
Sometimes the pressure of working full time, plus the need to create the perfect holiday experience can lead to overload, depression or just plain hysteria.
Here are three suggestions to help make your holiday season more enjoyable:
1. Reduce the number of gifts you give. It isn't necessary to lavish three or four onto one person, unless that person is a child. 'Tis better to give gifts throughout the year and those should mostly include "the gift of you". Time together doing something fun whether that is a pedicure, a movie, a picnic, or a day at the mall. Anything that allows you to nurture your relationship with the other person is special, appropriate and fun!
2. Share baking duties. More than any other time of the year, during the holidays we are inspired to bake from scratch. A cookie or dessert exchange with friends allows you to bake several dozen of one item, and then exchange most of it for your friends' baked goods. This allows each of you to focus on the item you do best yet still allows you to have a variety of holiday goodies - all with less time, less cost and with the added benefit of a day together with your friends.
3. Outsource as many tasks as possible. There is no benefit to you spending 20 (or 40) minutes in line at the Post Office when your time could be better spent elsewhere. Likewise, shopping, wrapping and cooking duties can often be done more efficiently by someone else. And don't forget the holiday cards! Despite the fact we embrace all things technological and especially those that eliminate paper, when it comes to holiday sentiments, nothing beats receiving a hand addressed card in the mail. However, there is no rule saying the handwriting needs to be yours.
The key to a stress-less holiday season is organization and prioritization. Your time needs to be spent on those things that absolutely require your decision making processes or your talents. Everything else should be delegated. Go ahead, make your list of things to do this year and take a hard look at it.
What can you delegate? What can you eliminate? How can you operate more efficiently? Don't get bogged down by the commercialism. Try to maintain the proper perspective and focus on what's truly important.
The whole point of the holiday season is to celebrate - life, joy, friends, family, faith, community, and for me, my birthday. Close your eyes. Make a wish. Blow out the candles! And have a happy holiday season!!

Shopping - Money & Time Saving Apps....
As this is the biggest shopping season of the year, it only seems fitting to promote two really awesome iPad and iPhone shopping applications.
First is Cardstar - a free application to house all your loyalty card numbers. Grocery stores, Staples, Pet Smart, CVS, Best Buy.... No matter where you have a loyalty/discount card, you can manage it here. Cardstar for iPad also sends you discount coupons for your loyalty card library. That way, all you have to do is enter or swipe your loyalty card at checkout and the coupon is applied. You can even use the digital card on your iPhone. What an easy way to save!
Second is Grocery IQ - an electronic grocery list. This free application works for both iPad and iPhone and in fact syncs between them so your grocery list is up to date no matter where you are. In fact, if your significant other updates the list from the PC or Mac or other electronic device, your list will be automatically updated. No more phone calls to 'pick up milk on your way home'!
These days it is prudent to save time and money where you can. Reduce the number of trips to the grocery store (and the amount of gas you use) by using Grocery IQ and save money through Cardstar with coupons applied to your loyalty cards. Better yet, let Executive Errands do your shopping and we'll make sure you do both!
Cardstar and Grocery IQ - two great apps for one great price - FREE! For shopping assistance, please contact Executive Errands at 760.898.9604 or www.executive-errands.com We are here to help free up your life! |
The Gift to Avoid...
One gift we don't want to get for the holidays are the extra pounds that come with over indulgence in all sorts of seasonal goodies. Here are a few tips for Healthy Holiday Eating:
1. Be realistic. Don't try to lose pounds during the holidays, instead try to maintain your current weight 2. Plan time for exercise. Exercise helps relieve holiday stress and prevent weight gain. A moderate and daily increase in exercise can help partially offset increased holiday eating. Try 10- or 15-minute brisk walks twice a day. 3. Don't skip meals. Before leaving for a party, eat a light snack like raw vegetables or a piece of fruit to curb your appetite. You will be less tempted to over-indulge.
4. Survey party buffets before filling your plate. Choose your favorite foods and skip your least favorite. Include vegetables and fruits to keep your plate balanced. 5. Eat until you are satisfied, not stuffed. Savor your favorite holiday treats while eating small portions. Sit down, get comfortable, and enjoy. 6. Be careful with beverages. Alcohol can lessen inhibitions and induce overeating; non-alcoholic beverages can be full of calories and sugar. 7. If you overeat at one meal go light on the next. It takes 500 calories per day (or 3,500 calories per week) above your normal/maintenance consumption to gain one pound. It is impossible to gain weight from one piece of pie! 8. Take the focus off food. Turn candy and cookie making time into non-edible projects like making wreaths, dough art decorations or a gingerbread house.
9. Plan group activities with family and friends that aren't all about food. Try serving a holiday meal to the community, playing games or going on a walking tour of decorated homes. 10.Bring your own healthy dish to a holiday gathering. Practice healthy holiday cooking. Preparing favorite dishes lower in fat and calories will help promote healthy holiday eating. Take pleasure in the holidays, plan a time for activity, incorporate healthy recipes into your holiday meals, and don't restrict yourself from enjoying your favorite holiday foods. In the long run, your mind and body will thank you - and that's a gift you can truly enjoy!

Giving the Gift of Charity...
While you're making your list of tasks for this holiday season, be sure to include at least a few for the local charities. Take time for those less fortunate than yourself who need warm clothes, a warm meal, or just a warm hug.
It's the perfect time to teach your children and grandchildren about charitable giving. Have them help shop for an underprivileged child. Have them help collect clothes or blankets for a local shelter. Have them go with you to donate food to the local food bank. Explain to the children why the people you're helping are in need. Kids are never too young to learn to give of themselves in a charitable way. Another easy way to include charitable giving is to add an aspect to your company holiday party. In lieu of (or in addition to) your holiday gift exchange, consider asking each party attendee to bring food, school supplies, a blanket or any other item needed by your favorite charity. And don't forget our furry friends! The local animal shelters always need kibble and blankets. The warm feeling you'll get from helping others far outweighs any other gift you'll receive this holiday season and we encourage you to do whatever you can to help those less fortunate than yourselves. If you have items to donate, Executive Errands will pick up (or facilitate pickup) and deliver your items, free of charge, throughout the month of December. For more information or to schedule a pickup, please call us at 760.898.9604 |
Holiday Gift Exchanges... Simplified!
Do you still need to do a 'secret Santa' gift exchange? The best and easiest way to do it is by using Elfster (www.elfster.com) This free online application allows the party coordinator (you) to enter all your gift exchange participants and their email addresses. Once everyone is in, you select the date for your party, the price point for your exchange and hit 'go'! The program shuffles everyone then pairs up for Secret Santa giving and sends an email to each person notifying them of their gift recipient. Participants can enter wish lists if they'd like so their Secret Santa has an idea of what to give. One extra nice feature of Elfster is this: if you have the same participants year to year, Elfster tracks prior Secret Santa assignments and doesn't repeat pairings. That is especially nice when your family does yearly gift exchanges. Go electronic. Go elf. Go Elfster for gift exchanges!

Gift Ideas...
If you're like me, you like to give gift certificates but you may be concerned they lack the 'wow' factor from a gift opening perspective. Well we can fix that!
Our custom gift baskets solve the dilemma of how to make a gift certificate special. Each one is handcrafted and personally designed for your specific recipient. Love to sew? Avid bird watcher? Crazy about darts? A country music fan? Casinos? Cooking? All of these make great basket ideas and will create a very personal gift for that special someone.
What better way to show you listen than to have a gift created specific to their interests? And of course nuzzled inside are any of our great gift certificates. Or you can create a basket without. It's up to you.
Our gift baskets come in all price points and unlike other basket companies, these are not shrink wrapped or full of inedible products. Each food product is taste tested to insure it is delicious.
Packaging is minimal so you actually get great snacks with a lot of value. Gift baskets should be ordered at least a week in advance.
Baskets for Christmas must be ordered no later than December 16th.
To order or for more information, please contact us at 760.898.9604 orwww.executive-errands.com |

For a quick delicious holiday treat, try the following in place of regular, high fat egg nog:
Quick Holiday Nog - Four bananas, 1-1/2 cups skim milk, soymilk or almond milk, 1-1/2 cups plain nonfat yogurt, 1/4 teaspoon rum extract, and ground nutmeg. Blend all ingredients except nutmeg. Puree until smooth. Top with nutmeg.
I love the holiday season. The early darkness, the lights everywhere, the music in the stores, the cool nights. It is magical. I love giving gifts from the heart - both actual physical gifts to my family and friends and the spirit of gifting through charitable activities.
I'm already nearly done with my holiday shopping, our charitable efforts are in full swing and my plan is to enjoy a stress-free season that includes healthy eating, good friends and fun activities.
Please don't forget - if you have anything to donate for charity and you're pressed for time, give us a call for pick ups and deliveries.
The next time we meet, it will be 2012. Wow! Can't wait for what promises to be a fantastic, exciting and prosperous New Year!
Celebrate your holiday traditions, whatever they might be, enjoy your families, do your part for those less fortunate and please, let us know how we can help make your season more enjoyable.
We're right here, always available at your convenience.
Happy New Year!
