Greetings!
September is traditionally the kickoff of our 'season' here in the Desert. If this year holds up to last, immediately following the Labor Day weekend there will be an influx of out of state license plates indicating our snow birds have come home to roost.
Along with season comes a constant procession of social events, particularly charitable events. Executive Errands is heavily involved with three non-profit groups. We participate in charitable activities because we believe it is important for local companies like ourselves to give back to the communities who utilize our services.
We're only involved with three, but that doesn't mean we are exempt from all the other charitable organizations. In fact, it becomes even more important to attend and support as many events as possible because you want those organizations to attend and support the ones you're doing (quid pro quo).
That means our dance card (schedule) is already heavily booked between now and the end of this year. There are fashion shows and parades, luncheons and dinners and roundups. There are expos and award dinners and anniversary parties and mixers. There are breakfasts and networking events and spa days and meetups.
There will be hats and red fashion and silent auctions and a plethora of heartbreaking yet inspirational pleas for donations, contributions and all kinds of assistance, both monetary and labor-related.
The key to working with non-profit organizations, particularly those that raise funding for local charities is to strike a balance between volunteering and zeal.
What I mean by that is this: Your enthusiasm and belief in the cause coupled with a Type A personality can result in fatigue, over commitment, alienation of friends, and a loss of joy for the cause you so fervently want to support.
A volunteer, by definition, is "one who renders a service while having no legal concern or interest". That means volunteers neither receive nor expect any sort of compensation other than the satisfaction they receive by the difference they make in the lives of others.
And generally they want to satisfy their commitments in their own time and in their own way because it is a voluntary effort. They certainly do not want it to feel like another job or some sort of obligation. They want it to be fun.
Why do people join non-profit fund raising organizations? Sometimes people join because they want to give back. Sometimes it's because their life has been touched in some way by the organization. Sometimes it's purely for networking and relationship building. No matter the reason, anyone who stays in a non-profit for any length of time is sure to be touched deeply by the causes they support, especially when the impact of the organization is felt locally.
One of our non-profits, Soroptimist, does just that. Even though it is an international organization (www.soroptimist.org), we primarily support local programs. We get to write the donation checks directly to these local agencies and, if we want, we can get to know them, learn more about how they operate, meet the women who benefit from their programs - it's an amazing, emotional, and deeply moving experience.
This year I am President of our Soroptimist club and I hope to leave my mark on this wonderful organization by inspiring our members to even greater heights so we can have an even greater impact on the programs we support.
I worry though, that my enthusiasm coupled with a sometimes too strong personality will discourage rather than encourage and so I am consciously trying to rein it in. It isn't easy. The passion for the women we help and their programs is so overwhelming at times that I can feel myself becoming obsessive about tasks and agendas and opportunities for improvement.
The year runs July through June so we have a long way yet to go. I admire and deeply respect all the members of our club so it is doubly important that somehow I find a balance between the passion I feel for the programs and keeping it fun for the members (and for me).
I'm not sure yet how this is all going to work, but I do know this - two of the best things about a full dance card are the people you'll meet and the new dances you'll learn. I'm excited for the coming year and the social aspect of our charitable activities. Keep your fingers crossed that I am able to find the balance necessary to both do a good job and enjoy the dance.

Our Favorite Things... Microsoft Mr. Fixit
Do you find yourself with oddball computer errors? Does Internet Explorer suddenly freeze for no good reason? If so, you might want to try Mr. Fixit, Microsoft's free 'repair all' program that contains automated fixes for common computer problems.
Fixit can be found at http://support.microsoft.com/fixit/ You will need to be fairly computer literate (but not necessarily 'techie') to use this tool because you need to be able to pick the correct 'fixit' download for your particular problem; however Microsoft is working to create fix downloads that are easier for the average user to understand.
What we like about 'fixit' is that A. it's Free, B. it's pretty easy to understand and C. It actually does help your computer to run better.
If you aren't sure what to do or which program to select - STOP and get a professional. But if you have a fair understanding of the problems you're having with Internet Explorer, Microsoft Office, Windows, Entertainment or anything else, you might want to give Microsoft Mr. Fixit a try.
Microsoft Mr. Fixit - one of our favorite things! ["Our Favorite Things" gives us an opportunity to share people, places, events and things that we truly love and that you might too. We have no business affiliation with any company or individual featured here. We just want to share good things with you and if our recommendations help build business for someone else or saves you time or money, GREAT!!!] |
The History of Labor Day...
Did you know that until Labor Day became a Federally recognized holiday in 1894, workers who chose to participate in Labor Day parades or celebrations had to forfeit a day's wages? Seems pretty harsh considering Labor Day is intended to honor the working class.
In the late 1800's, which was considered the height of the industrial revolution, working conditions were particular bad. Most people worked at least 12 hour days, 7 days a week just to earn a modest living.
Despite restrictions in some States, children as young as 5 or 6 toiled in mills, factories and mines across the country, earning a fraction of their adult counterparts' wages. People of all ages, particularly the very poor and recent immigrants, often faced extremely unsafe working conditions, with insufficient access to fresh air, sanitary facilities and breaks.
As manufacturing replaced agriculture as the primary American employment, Unions and workers began to rail against the poor working conditions. Some of these uprisings turned violent, including the infamous Haymarket incident of 1886 in which several laborers and policemen were killed.
On September 5, 1882, 10,000 workers took unpaid time off to march from City Hall to Union Square in New York City, holding the first Labor Day parade in U.S. history. The idea of a "workingmen's holiday," celebrated on the first Monday in September, caught on in other industrial centers across the country and many states passed legislation recognizing it.
Congress didn't officially make it a holiday though until 12 years later when employees of the Pullman Palace Car Company in Chicago went on strike to protest wage cuts and the firing of union representatives. On June 26, the American Railroad Union, led by Eugene V. Debs, called for a boycott of all Pullman railway cars, crippling railroad traffic nationwide.
To break the strike, the federal government dispatched troops to Chicago, unleashing a wave of riots that resulted in the deaths of more than a dozen workers. In the wake of this massive unrest and in an attempt to repair ties with American workers, Congress passed an act making Labor Day a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the territories.
Today, most people have forgotten the real reason for Labor Day and the effort it took to create it; instead, Labor Day signifies the end of Summer and the back to school season. Sometimes it's worth taking a look back into our history to appreciate the sacrifices made so we can enjoy the comforts of life today.
No longer are children allowed to labor in sweat shops or anywhere. Breaks are mandatory and there are minimum wages set. Granted, the current minimum wage won't support anyone but a teenager after school, but at least there is some sort of guideline to prevent the exploitation of American workers.
If you're one of the millions of families celebrating Labor Day this year with a picnic or family outing, please pause and give a moment of silent honor to the men and women who fought to have better working conditions for all of us. And yes, have a Happy Labor Day!

Itsy Bitsy Spider....
What is it about August that suddenly there are spiders everywhere? Have you ever tried to wash away a spider web? It doesn't work. And the dirt and dust... wow! All summer long we've been tending to homes and come August, all of a sudden everything is filthy - what happened?
Maybe summer just catches up with itself or maybe the humidity associated with monsoon season acts as a magnet drawing the dust and dirt into all cracks and crevices. Whatever causes it, the fact is: the outside of homes are suddenly atrocious.
I don't know why this should come as a surprise. It happens every year. That's why we send out an email this time of the year recommending our clients schedule their Fall maintenance.
Time slots fill up fast and we want to be sure our clients get to the front of the line when it comes to scheduling Fall cleaning and maintenance. The unfortunate thing is, if your home is in a planned community, the yards are most likely subject to scalping and over seeding which scares up dust and grass and will dirty windows, but that won't happen until probably October so if you wait until the scalping is done, you may have up to two months when your home is unattractive and dirty.
If you plan to be here before October, your home needs to be cleaned now because you really won't be happy with it, but if you aren't coming until November, give us a head's up and we'll schedule around the scalping and make sure your home sparkles (ok, not literally sparkles, but it will be clean) for your return.
Our list of Fall cleaning and preventative maintenance includes:
· Housekeeping
· Window Cleaning
· Service AC units
· Pressure Washing of the exterior of the home
· Pressure Washing of the patios, walkways and driveway
· Carpet Cleaning
· Shutter and Blind Cleaning
· Upholstery cleaning (both inside and patio cushions if you'd like)
· Change out smoke alarm batteries
· Convert smoke alarms to combination smoke alarm/CO detectors (it's a new law in CA*)
If you're not yet a client (and why not?), we are happy to process a referral to our network of insured and quality-focused service providers. Referrals are always free. But better yet, become a client and let us facilitate these services on your behalf so when you get back into town everything is already done!
Executive Errands wants to help free up your life and we are here at your convenience. For more information or to become a client or to request a referral, please contact us at 760.898.9604 or 760.469.2487 www.executive-errands.com
*Carbon Monoxide detectors are required for all homes effective July 1, 2011 per CA Law SB183. Per the 2010 California Residential Building Code, these detectors must be hardwired and interconnected and placed outside all sleeping areas and in any room with a fuel burning appliance. |
BATTERIES...The Positives and Negatives
We don't like batteries. Not just dislike them. Or even extremely dislike them. No, we seriously don't like them.... I know that sounds harsh but in our line of work there is always a battery beeping somewhere.
There are three primary types of batteries causing us grief: Smoke alarm, golf cart and automobile.
The trouble with batteries is that the desert heat wreaks havoc on them and significantly reduces their usable life. Automobile batteries average just a year (maybe two if you're lucky) before they have to be changed. Golf cart batteries usually last a little longer, especially if you keep their water filled, but they too have a reduced life due to heat. And smoke alarm batteries... well, they need to be changed out twice a year no matter where you live.
We lost several car batteries this year and our clients, while doing their best to be understanding, sometimes have difficulty accepting why those things die so easily when they've had the same battery in their car for five, ten or 15 years in their other, more temperate climate. It's just a fact of life here. I have to change my car battery every year and I drive my car every day. Batteries just don't last long in the desert.
Smoke alarm batteries need to be changed at least twice per year and it's a good idea to do them when the time changes; that way you won't forget them. Unfortunately and despite our best educational efforts, there are still folks who leave their homes empty during the summer without home checks.
That means at 5 pm on any given Friday, our customer service line is ringing off the hook because a homeowner just got into town and the smoke alarm battery is CHIRPING.... Those things are like crickets. Annoying. Chirp... Chirp.... Chirp.... And they are almost always 14 feet up in the air. Lovely.
Of course most of the time we are able to get someone last minute to change them out, but gee, wouldn't it be nicer for the homeowner not to have to come home to that? Wouldn't it be easier to have a Concierge who checks on these things and who will proactively have the batteries changed before they drive you crazy?
It's not the battery's fault and we shouldn't berate them. When it comes to batteries, we want them to hold a charge and we do our best to maintain them in the manner to which they've become accustomed. We have procedures that were defined by golf cart and automobile mechanics who know how to do these things and yet, the batteries still die. And there's nothing anyone can do except change them out and properly dispose of them. RIP batteries... we wish you well. www.executive-errands.com 760.898.9604 or 760.469.2487 |

Keeping Your Cool...
While we're on the topic of heat related effects, it might be helpful for you to know that air conditioning units are also adversely affected by the heat. Central air conditioning systems have an average life expectancy of 12 - 15 years. Here in the desert, their usable life is reduced to about 10 years. The most common failures are the blower motor, the transformer, the thermostat and/or the circuit board.
The blower motor and circuit boards are exceptionally expensive and there is no way to predict when one or the other might fail. In homes where there are multiple units, these piece parts (or LRU's - lowest replaceable units) don't fail with any sort of consistency. In other words, just because one blower motor goes out and even though all your units are of the same age, that doesn't mean the other blower motors are soon to fail. It just doesn't work like that.
The heat is harsh here and to prolong the life of your AC units, please engage in twice yearly maintenance. Have the units checked, clean the coils, clear the condensate line, check all the connections and the freon levels, change the filters. Executive Errands' HVAC technicians are available to maintain your units. And when they do fail, let Executive Errands get you back up and running as quickly as possible. Just for Fun....

With all the earth movement lately and especially since there was a fairly large sized earthquake in, of all places, Virginia, we thought you might appreciate this new app, Earthquake Survival Kit Lite.
This pretty cool app has 14 different tools to assist you both pre and post earthquake. On the pre side, it will tell you the location of the most recent quakes, alert you to the probability of an earthquake in your area and provides safety tips in the event you are ever caught in an earthquake.
On the post side - there is a flashlight that turns your phone or iPad into literally a flashlight, there are first aid tips, there is an alarm feature that helps to keep you awake - an invaluable feature when you're pinned under rubble and waiting assistance - and this app even monitors your battery life so you can conserve it until help arrives.
One very cool feature is the SOS - it comes in acoustic, visual and and by position so whether you need someone to hear where you are, see you need help or have them track you by GPS, this little app does it all.
Earthquake Survival Kit Lite is FREE, but most of the features won't work until you download the 99 cent update. It would seem 99 cents is a very small investment in something so helpful, especially now that earthquakes are no longer just for California (they never were, by the way, but lots of people liked to think they were).
It doesn't hurt to be prepared. Check out Earthquake Survival Kit Lite - it is available for both iPad and iPhone. |

Executive Errands is very pleased to announce we are the first Concierge company to institute electronic absentee home checks!
The electronic forms are maintained in our secure website. Upon completion of the home check, the Concierge fills out the form online and when it saves, an email is automatically sent to the homeowner, letting them know a home check was just completed and the form is available to view online.
The client can then access their own account in the website and view their home check forms from anywhere they have internet access.
This technology was developed specifically for Executive Errands using specifications defined by us. We have full transparency for our clients, allowing them to view their Hours Logs and account information at their discretion. All non-critical information is communicated electronically.
Electronic communications include automated referrals, automated billing, automated receipts, online Hours Logs and now electronic absentee home check forms.
Executive Errands is a member of the International Concierge and Lifestyle Management Organization and we hold a Certified Concierge Specialist designation - one of less than 20 in the world. Executive Errands is proud to be a leader in the Concierge market!

Doing charity work is one of the most rewarding activities you can do. There are so many people in need, especially these days with the challenges of the economy and the loss of so many jobs. However, even when we're fighting our own battles, there is always someone worse off than we are.
That's why I believe everyone is capable of some sort of charity work. And I believe it's important to give of your time even more than your money. Oh, anyone can throw money at a problem and oftentimes money is truly helpful, but if you want to feel the difference you can make, then give of yourself.
It is only when we donate time that we see the impact of our actions and how one little act of kindness can impact another's life. Sometimes it is as simple as truly listening or holding open a door or even just letting someone in front of us in line. Even tiny actions can affect someone in a profound way.
The types of kindnesses I like best are the anonymous ones. The ones you feel in your heart but for which you get no recognition or feedback. Those are the fun things to do. It isn't about the personal recognition; it is about taking the time to be nice or thoughtful or considerate. You know there is a saying about that - people may not remember you, but they'll remember how you made them feel.
Sometimes our path through life is fraught with potholes but we get to choose whether or not we want to dance our way around them. Always take the time to help those less fortunate than yourself. Every day try to do one simple act of kindness. It doesn't have to be a big deal, just do something unexpected and see how the other person's face lights up. Or better yet, do something anonymously.
Have a wonderful Labor Day holiday - best wishes to all the kids going back to school - don't forget to have us schedule your home for Fall cleanup and when the road of life gets bumpy, constantly ask yourself, 'Shall We Dance?'....
