Greetings!

Business objectivesHere's another little known fact about me:  I'm addicted to business books.  Oh yes - I have highlighted and dog-eared copies of 'The Goal', 'Who Moved My Cheese', 'The One Minute Manager', 'The E-Myth', 'Rich Dad Poor Dad' and at least 50 others.

I read them all and keep them, like some sort of security blanket, just in case I need one of their little pearls of wisdom.  In fact, I rarely reread them or even scan the highlights.  They just sit on a bookshelf gathering dust and every time I've ever tried to discard one, I read the cover or flip through the pages and find myself inspired and with renewed enthusiasm for the work I do and thus cannot part with any.

However, this last month, I embarked on yet another ruthless sweep through my home and office to rid myself of unused clutter and found myself face-to-face with my cherished business books.  You have to understand, some of these gems have been around for at least 20 years.

business books'The Goal', as an example, was handed out to every employee of the company where I worked in 1992.  It was required reading at the time and worthwhile too.  The gist of it?  The Goal of your company is to Make Money and every decision, action, policy and process in your company should be aimed at accomplishing that goal.  Duh!  And I didn't even have to pick the book back up to remember its lesson - some things you never forget.

I ended up letting almost all of my business books go, but not without perusing them first.  Two of them, both also handed out and required reading by that same employer but in 1994 and 1997, were specifically aimed at the new Information Age and how it was going to impact the work environment.

They are 'Mind Shift' and 'New Work Habits for a Radically Changing World'.  Since they both were intended to be forward looking and prophetic, I took the time to re-read them and then had to go check their facts and figures to see how the World has actually changed.  This just might astonish you.  It did me!

Today most people have basic living necessities that once were considered only for the rich.  Some of these include:

It's easy to see how growth in one area reduces others.  For example, since the percentage of people owning one or more cars has risen to 91%, the need for truck, bus and taxi drivers is reduced.

cell phonesCell phones, non-existent in 1983, jumped to 16 million by the end of 1993.  By 2010, there were 5 BILLION cell phones in use.  That's a sobering number since the World's population is predicted to hit 7 billion in October of this year. And of course along with cell phones comes the entire cell phone industry, not even on anyone's (literal) radar scope in 1910.

In 1993, 19 million people carried pagers and they left 12 billion messages that year.  Now pagers and its industry are obsolete, having been replaced by cell phones and email.  In 2010, 294 billion emails were sent PER DAY in the US.  Holy Cow! (Some days it seems I actually send that many myself)

In addition to the changes in occupations and labor distributions, there have been other interesting developments in debt, wages and the industries in which we find work.

We've been watching intently the public debt crisis* but do you know how fast the debt has been rising?  Here is a quick look (data for 2011 captured July 22nd):

gdpWhat kind of work do we do?  We have to ask: What makes up our Gross Domestic Product (GDP)?  In the late 1800's, the service economy represented 33% of the GDP.  It grew to 66% after WWII, to 75% in the late 1970's and to 80% by 1996.  In 2010, the service industry still represents 78% of the GDP.  Compare that to Agriculture (1.2%) and Industrial (22.2%) and you can see that the services sector is an important part of our economy and future.

Having said education is key, it is my opinion (and only my opinion) that the entrepreneur will make up the new middle class, especially now that factory work and manufacturing is all but gone from our country.

As traditional jobs disappear, more and more of us will 'find a need and fill it'; the hallmark of all successful entrepreneurs.  And while I am an education advocate and junkie (love to fill my brain with new facts and figures), it doesn't always take a formal education to be successful.  You just have to surround yourself with the kind of people who can help get you where you need to go.

key to successThe keys to success in a World that changes as quickly as ours does is to be flexible, embrace change, keep your eyes open and seize new opportunities and be wise enough to continually upgrade your knowledge base so as to be useful and value-added no matter what line of work you opt to pursue.

Charles Darwin said 'It's not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change'.  As our world changes, so we must change with it.  We do need to shift our thinking and embrace the fact technology is here to stay.

Every time I think surely we've maxed out in technological growth for one area, another new avenue pops up.  Newer, faster, shinier, slicker, amazing things we can do electronically and by using our brains instead of our brawn.  That is fact.  And I figure it is an amazing era in which to live.....

Hand Car Wash of Palm Desert, Inc

hand car wash of palm desertBecause the name of my company is prominently displayed on my automobile, I have my car washed every single week.  About four years ago, I started using Hand Car Wash of Palm Desert, Inc - located at 42185 Washington St - in the Albertson's shopping center at Hovely and Washington.

At the time, I lived near there so it was convenient.  They do a great job - in fact, the best job of any car wash I've ever used.

Two years ago I moved away from that area so it is a drive and even though there are at least two car wash businesses closer to my new home, I still make the time to go back to Hand Car Wash

Seriously, the windows are absolutely streak free.  They blow the water out of the cars joints so you don't get blowback on your freshly cleaned surfaces.  They are quick, friendly and their facility is kept up nicely.

hand car washThey offer quantity discounts ($2 off every so many washes) and they offer discounts on Wednesdays.  The fact is, they do a great job and on the few times I used a car wash closer to home due to time constraints, I find myself always disappointed and end up going back to Hand Car Wash.

For more information about discounts, windshield repair, or express detailing, please contact them at 760.360.4990 or by email at hcwpd@yahoo.com

Figuring Out Your Electronics...

early vcrWhen was the last time you checked the facts about your home theater equipment?  Are you still using multiple remote controls?  Do you have more than one receiver?  Does your surround sound surround you or are there dead spots?  Does your home theater system support BluRay, iPod, iPad, internet, Hi Def, photographs, streaming video and video games?

Technology advances at lightning speed and while it may not be cost effective to keep up with it 100%, it does make sense to review what you have every two years or so and ask yourself the following questions:  Is my system efficient? Is it doing everything we want it to do?

What happens to most of us is we kluge together a system by adding a new piece of hardware every once in awhile - maybe a high tech surround sound system or just a new BluRay player - without taking into consideration the balance of our equipment.

updated home theaterThis means that we may or may not be enjoying the total capabilities of our new hardware and / or we may be overcomplicating what should be a straightforward home theater experience.  Home theaters - whether it's just a television and a DVD player or the whole gamut of audio/visual products - are complex systems with astounding capabilities.

Whether you're a sports nut or a soap opera addict, a reality tv junkie or a game show aficionado, whether you play XBOX, Wii or Playstation, listen to music or post pictures online, if you surf the internet or utilize the latest software applications (apps), you need a technologically updated home theater system.

And as you have probably already figured, Executive Errands can help you realize your dream of simplified home theater operation while still providing the latest in technology.  For more information or to request an in home evaluation of your existing Home Theater system, please contact us at 760.469.2487 www.executive-errands.com

The Facts About Water...

rainWe just had rain - and quite a bit of it in some areas of the desert.  How did your roof hold up?  Oftentimes we forget just how harsh the sun and wind can be on our roof - lost or missing tile, cracks, gaps opening around vents, normal wear and fatigue.  Even rodents, seeking shelter from the heat, will exacerbate or leverage cracks to gain entrance to your attic space which not only poses a nuisance, but also leaves your roof vulnerable to water leaks.

If you're not sure when your roof last had an inspection or if you've already seen leaks, give Executive Errands a call.  Our service provider offers free roof inspections so you can have peace of mind.

If your roof is already leaking, we can facilitate the repairs or, in serious cases, assist with the flood dry out and remediation.  So when it comes to water, Executive Errands can help you stay dry and comfortable.

For more information or to get roof inspection for your home, please contact Executive Errands and we'll put you in touch with our roofing experts.

Promoting Your Community...

There are still home buyers out there, but they are extremely selective.  Executive Errands often gets emails asking us about the benefits of living in one community or another; or maybe a buyer hasn't reached the comparison stage yet so they ask for a recommendation of a community that might be a good place to live.

videographerHow does your community stack up?  Do you promote the benefits of your community?  Many associations are adopting social media, public awareness campaigns (i.e. billboards or other advertising) and some are creating videos for Youtube or to display on their websites.

These days it pays to promote your community and a video is a visually beautiful, versatile and long lasting way to do it.  For more information or to get a video production consultation, please contact Executive Errands and we'll put you in touch with our videographer.

springpad logoAre you ever out and about and see something you need to write down but are at a loss for paper and pen?  Or maybe you put something into your smart phone, but then can't find it or there are so many notes you can't make sense of them.

Enter Springpad, the latest (and coolest) app for phones and iPad.  Springpad allows you to make notes, enter tasks, snap a picture of a barcode, take a picture or click a 'favorites link', create a visual bulletin board or partially enter something then use the internet to find supporting or supplemental information.

You can create virtual notebooks to catalog your information so it is easy to find later and then it syncs everything to your other mobile devices.  The Springpad website (http://springpad.com) says to "think
of Springpad as your own place in the cloud - a high-powered internet-connected personal database of everything that's of interest to you, even if you're not ready to do something about it right away."

springpad appAs an example, say a friend or colleague suggests a book for you to read.  You can type the name of the book into Springpad, then search for a link to it for later purchase and read book reviews, check pricing, and save everything for later when you're ready to take action.

In addition, and this is the coolest part, Springpad knows what you've saved and will notify you if there are price drops, changes in product availability, deals of the day, news, useful links and other relevant offers for the things that matter to you. It's like having your own personal assistant.

The Springpad app is FREE and there is a video tutorial on their website.  It is available for smart phones and iPad.  Keep your facts straight.... check out Springpad!

New car backHave you noticed that the little blue BMW with the loud pictures and Executive Errands wrap is missing from the desert landscape?  That's because, sadly, it was traded it in for a new vehicle.

Someone said the Executive Errands BMW being gone is like the Rancho Mirage Elephant sign had been razed.  Ok, it's not that big of a crisis.

It was just time for something a little bigger, a little sleeker and with fewer maintenance issues. Here then is the new and improved Executive Errands corporate vehicle! Classy, fun and way up off the ground.  Be sure to keep an eye out - this one will be all over the desert too!

ipad booksBusiness books are a great way to spark your creativity and rejuvenate your enthusiasm, especially when you are self-employed.  I used to be a book snob, preferring hardback versions over paperback, even when I traveled and had to lug the darn things around.

These days I prefer e-books, downloading them to my iPad.  As the iPad is with me all the time, I find I read more often; sometimes sneaking in a chapter or two between meetings.

Book sales in general have exploded, particularly with the new e-book option.  In February 2011, the Association of American Publishers submitted the following statistics:

  • Book sales for the year ending 2010 reached the $11.67B sales mark which reflects a 3.6% increase over calendar 2009.
  • E-book sales continue to break records with a 164% increase over 2009 to reach $441.3 million for the year.
  • 2010 December sales rose +2.4% over December 2009 ($1.58B versus $1.54B)
  • Downloaded audio books increased 38.8% to $81.9M versus $59M in 2009

And then there are my precious business books which saw a sales increase of 5% over 2009 to $812.9M

used booksE-books are convenient, but not as satisfying to read.  I like to highlight inspirational passages and bend down the pages to hold my place.  And while you can do this virtually with electronic books, it doesn't feel the same.

Plus there is the smell of books.  Walk into any used book store or library and you'll know what I mean.  I love that smell.  Paper and ink and well loved pages.  When I pick up a used book, especially a well used book, I often wonder who held it before me and what it meant to them.

I've always been an avid reader.  When I was a kid I was a proud library card holder; picking an author and reading everything he or she published.  All the Nancy Drew Books.  A Tree Grows in Brooklyn.  Catcher in the Rye.  The Bobbsey Twins.  Just a few of the ones that pop immediately into my mind.

Today, I mostly stick with business books as I look to stay current, to find new ways to improve my business and strive to stay motivated.  I would encourage you to read a book, any book.  Make the time to stretch your mind, get lost in another world or just enhance your knowledge base.  Add some facts and figures.... You'll be glad you did!
