Greetings!
Have you ever been a victim of plagiarism?
We're sure you've experienced it in some form. Maybe you shared a secret recipe with a close friend and soon found they were passing it off as their own. Or maybe you've become famous for a particular catch phrase only to hear it being repeated by a colleague who is taking credit for it. Or worse, your child earns an award for a short story and later you find out he copied it off the Internet. Each of these situations is an example of plagiarism.
Plagiarism is defined as the "wrongful appropriation," "close imitation," or "purloining and publication" of another author's "language, thoughts, ideas, or expressions," and the representation of them as one's own original work.
Each of the examples above are annoying and irritating, but it's only the third one that might actually carry any sort of legal ramification. That's because plagiarism is particularly hurtful, immoral and illegal when your Intellectual Property is affected.
Intellectual Property - or IP - refers to creations of the mind: inventions, literary and artistic works, symbols, names, images, and designs used in commerce. This may well include promotional and advertising pieces, forms, and other documentation you develop to promote your products and services.
If you've ever received two nearly identical discount coupons or promotions, offered by two different companies for the same maintenance service or product it's a sure bet one of them developed and paid for the design and the other one copied (plagiarized) it.
Recently we learned of a small company that was deliberately plagiarized by a large corporation. The small company spent several months researching a particular new Law, spoke to local experts, wrote informational articles and in the end, developed a set of IP advertising documentation including a new, proprietary form -- all in an effort to promote compliance to this new Law.
The large corporation decided they wanted to promote compliance too. Not only did they undercut the small company on price, but in their rush to compete, they also took all of the small company's Intellectual Property and passed it off as their own. This is a perfect example of a blatant and unethical act of plagiarism.
Since "creations of the mind" have been around for as long as man has enjoyed logical thinking, we took a look back through history to research the punishments for plagiarism. We were hoping we'd find something interesting like the Rack, or the Stocks or even thumb screws - you know some sort of medieval and public torture device that would teach offending plagiarists a lesson while still giving the wronged a modicum of perverse satisfaction....but alas no.
|
actual thumb screws |
About the best we could find is that most cases of plagiarism are considered misdemeanors punishable by fines of anywhere between $100 and $50,000 and up to one year in jail. Plagiarism can also be considered a felony under certain state and federal laws. For example, if a plagiarist copies and earns more than $2,500 from copyrighted material, he or she may face up to $250,000 in fines and up to ten years in jail.
With the advent of email and the electronic sharing of information, the control of your IP is particularly challenging. Even when you put confidentiality statements into your email signature to prohibit the copying or sharing of your emails (and attachments), some people will still violate your Intellectual Property and take it for their own.
The speed with which we can create and disseminate information means all of us should consider not only what we're sharing but also how deeply we need to safeguard it. We can't advise you how to protect your Intellectual Property but you should know there may be legal recourse for some instances of plagiarism.
And for those times when legal recourse is not warranted or cost effective, we think someone should bring back the Stocks. What a perfect punishment for plagiarism! It is swift, it is public and it is painfully humiliating with the added benefit of being extremely affordable. We're all about simplifying people's lives - perhaps it's time to return to simplified justice!

Our Favorite Things...The Wardrobe
Were you (or are you still) a fan of I Love Lucy? If so, you remember how she was always scheming to buy a new hat out of her grocery money and the episodes when she and Ethyl were in small dress shops.
There is a wonderful dress shop in Palm Springs that evokes the memory of Lucy and her crazy shenanigans. The Wardrobe, located at 108 S. Indian Canyon Drive in downtown Palm Springs, is exactly like the dress shops of old.
It seems to me there is only one of each item. The shop is small, intimate, has lovely clothes and a personalized level of customer service rarely seen in this era of big department store apathy.
Located at the corner of Tahquitz and Indian, The Wardrobe is a delight to both visitors and locals. They carry a wide range of sizes and everything from t-shirts to evening wear. In fact, they have some of the most unique evening wear in the Desert.
There are so few places to shop for evening wear that it's not uncommon to dread attending a large event because you're worried someone will be wearing an exact copy of the dress you're wearing.
If you've ever felt that way, try shopping at The Wardrobe. It's highly unlikely that two people would be caught in the same outfit.
The Wardrobe also carries lots of accessories, gifts and fun items, shoes, handbags and so much more.
For more information, please contact the owner, Sharon Jacobs, at 760.325.4330 When you're looking for fun and unique clothes? Try The Wardrobe.... One of our favorite places!
["Our Favorite Things" gives us an opportunity to share people, places, events and things that we truly love and that you might too. We have no business affiliation with any company or individual featured here. We just want to share good things with you and if our recommendations help build business for someone else or saves you time or money, GREAT!!!] |

Mother's Day is May 8th!
The history of how Mother's Day came to be is long and colorful and some celebrations can be traced back as far as 6000 BC.
Modern Mother's Day, as we know it today, most likely can be attributed to Anna Jarvis who in 1912 trademarked the phrases "second Sunday in May" and "Mother's Day". This is also when she created the Mother's Day International Association.
According to most references, Anna Jarvis was specific about the location of the apostrophe. She wanted it to be a singular possessive, so each family would honor their own mother, not a plural possessive commemorating all mothers in the world.
This is also the spelling used by U.S. President Woodrow Wilson in the law making official the holiday in the U.S., by the U.S. Congress on bills, and by other U.S. presidents on their declarations. One favored gift of Mother's Day is the gift basket. Gift Baskets can be customized for your mom. They can be traditional with perfumes and lotions or they can reflect her favorite hobby or even tools for the 'handymom'.
If you would like a custom designed gift basket for your Mom on Mother's Day, please contact us at 760.469.2487 You might find our service provider's pre-made baskets at Floris, our florist at 73647 Hwy 111, Suite B, Palm Desert (next to Keedy's on the frontage road) 760.346.7363 |
Fighting Dirty Dishes....
Have you noticed a yucky white film coating your dishes and flatware after they've been thoroughly processed through your dishwasher?
There are two causes of this problem:
- Hard water can cause film and buildup
- The recent phase-out of Phosphates leads to less effective detergent cleaning power
Phosphates are (were) the core strength of both laundry and dish detergents as they soften water and help prevent particles from redepositing on clothes and dishes, but phosphates can be harmful to the environment.
Governmental pressure to reduce environmental harm caused many States to ban the sale of detergents that contain phosphates. Laundry detergents dropped phosphates some time before the ban deadline of July 2010, but the effect on your clothes was minimal because washing machines have agitators that assist detergent to do its job.
Since dishwashers have no agitators, a lack of phosphates leaves your dishes with a white-ish film and can actually ruin the dishwasher when hard water deposits build up.
One way to combat this problem may be to use a product called Lemi Shine. Lemi Shine is a dishwasher additive that purportedly removes tough hard water buildup and film from dishes, glassware, and flatware while it cleans and deodorizes automatic dishwashers.
Lemi Shine was first recommended to us when we purchased a dishwasher for a client. The salesperson said he hears the same complaint daily - "my dishes have this nasty white film all over them" - and he said this product really helps.
The press for Lemi Shine says it:
- Shines dishes & glassware
- Removes tough hard water film & buildup
- Removes lime, calcium, iron & other
mineral deposits & stains - Cleans & deodorizes dishwashers
- Provides a like-new shine every time!
We have family members who've tried it and swear by its effectiveness. Lemi Shine runs right around $5 and may be found at any one of your local retailers (like Target and Walmart) or online from various distributers. |
Memorial Day Weekend...
Although the Memorial Day holiday was officially proclaimed in 1868 by General John Logan, this official recognition does not mark the holiday's true beginnings. It is impossible to credit any one person or place as the origin of Memorial Day because towns and communities all across America were taking time to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers in remembrance of their service to our country and the freedoms we enjoy - and they have been doing so since the first soldier fell.
In addition to remembering the men and women who serve our country, many people see Memorial Weekend as the kickoff of barbecue season. To help start you out right, here is a favorite steak marinade. It is absolutely delicious with Ribeye but was originally intended for a leaner cut, like Sirloin. Either one will work.
Steak Marinade:
1/3 cup red wine vinegar
1 Tablespoon sugar
1 Tablespoon reduced sodium soy sauce
1 Tablespoon olive oil
¼ Teaspoon coarse ground pepper
¼ Teaspoon marjoram
2-3 large peeled cloves fresh garlic through a garlic press (scrape all of it into the marinade)
1 heaping Tablespoon Grey Poupon Country Dijan mustard
Mix all well, pour into a gallon size ziplock baggie with one or two ½" - ¾" thick Ribeyes. Refrigerate and turn over every half hour for up to 4 hours. Grill to desired doneness.

Got Grungy Grout?
Think your tile is clean? Look again. Find a spot where there is no foot traffic, water or soap scum. Compare the grout in that area to the surrounding tile. Grout is one of those things we all have and often overlook when it comes to deep cleaning our homes.
Dirty grout can be a health hazard. In the bathrooms, it can be moldy. In the living areas, it can be dirt caked. In the kitchens there can be food and solvents pressed into the crevices. Salmonella anyone? That sound icky, we know, but grout is one of those areas that's difficult to clean and easy to ignore. Someone runs a mop or rag over tile, marble, or travertine and voila! We think it's clean. It just ain't so... Tile grout is chosen specifically to accent the colors and textures of the tile in your home. When the grout gets dirty, the overall design effect is diminished. You will be amazed at how much better any room looks once the tile grout is clean. In addition to properly cleaning grout, you should also seal it periodically. Not sure how often to seal it? Try this age-old test: Put a drop of water directly on the grout. If it beads up and sits on top, no need to seal; but if it sinks in and disappears, then it's time to reseal. Just be sure to do a thorough cleaning first.
And when you are ready to seal your grout, remember to select the finish (flat, gloss, semi-gloss) that best suits the finish of your tile. Ready to clean your tile? We can help. For more information or to request a referral for tile, marble, granite or travertine cleaning, sealing or polishing, please call us at 760.898.9604 or 760.469.2487 www.executive-errands.com |
New Services! Epoxy Floors & Concrete Overlays
Have you ever looked at your bare concrete garage floor and wished it looked a little nicer? Was easier to keep clean? Added some bit of value to your home?
Executive Errands is now offering epoxy and concrete resurfacing treatments for your garage floor. Even though these floors are still concrete (see both pictures - actual work by our service provider), they look like fancy stone.
If your concrete floors (garage or patio) are stained, discolored, cracked or have surface imperfections, resurfacing with a polymer-modified finish is an affordable alternative to removal and replacement.
It takes just three days to etch, prime and finish your floors to an elegant finish!
For more information or to quote your floor refinishing, please contact Executive Errands at 760.898.9604 or 760.469.2487 or by email at info@executive-errands.com |
Just for Fun....
If you have an iPhone or an iPad, you probably have a lot of fun finding apps. We want to spend the next few months sharing great apps so if you have one, send it to us at info@executive-errands.com and we'll share it here.
For this month, we're recommending RecipeGrazer - it's an amazing FREE app that looks like actual recipe cards, has full color pictures of the recipe and all ingredients. Perfect when shopping after work and you're not sure what to make for dinner.
This app is available for iPad for sure - it looks like it is available for iPhone but we've seen it work for some brands and not for others.
Check it out..... and if 'RecipeGrazer' doesn't return search results, try 'keyingredient'

The Cathedral City - Rancho Mirage (CC-RM) Soroptimist
Spring Fling fundraiser held April 9th was a fair success (or should that be 'faire' success since it was a Shopping Boutique?!?)
We raised a modest $2500 for House of Hope who desperately needs funding. Their regular State funding is at risk due to budget constraints and all Soroptimist clubs in the Coachella Valley are doing their part to help keep this vital and necessary program operational.
=====================================================================
In other Soroptimist news, we are collecting gently used bras for women in Africa. Our goal is to donate at least 5000 of these bras so if you have any you'd like to contribute, please contact us here at Executive Errands and we'll coordinate a pickup. 760.469.2487 Deadline to donate bras by June 1, 2011.
=====================================================================
We still have several CC-RM cookbooks available. If you're local to the desert, $20 gets you a beautiful and touching Best for Women cookbook filled with both delicious recipes and inspirational poems about women.
If you'd like one shipped to you, the cost is $25 to cover shipping, handling and packaging.
====================================================================
As always, the CC-RM Soroptimist club raises funds for House of Hope and other desert charities. Please do your part, if not for the women of House of Hope, then any local charity will do. It is imperative each of us takes the time to help those less fortunate and who are struggling to better their lives. |

Copy That! Is CB radio talk and means 'I hear you and I agree' not 'take the work of others'. Acts of plagiarism are symptomatic of a larger problem. Obviously it shouldn't be tolerated in any form, but when plagiarism happens within your workplace, the bigger question should be "why would any of my employees steal someone else's work in the first place?"
If you had to choose the single most important characteristic of a leader or employer, what might that be? Ethics? Morality? Honesty? Commitment? Follow through? Tenacity? Compassion? Grace?
In my book it's Integrity because if you have that, all the others follow.
You carry an immense responsibility when you're the boss. Everything about you - the way you act, the way you talk, how you treat people, your attitude and mood - all flows down throughout your company. It is the culture you create. It is the behavior your people mimic.
When you champion a cause, the whole company champions it. When you are happy, your employees are happy. When you are fair with them, they are fair with you. And when you respect them, the respect is mutual.
But it works the same way for negative behavior. When you cheat others, your people cheat. If you gossip, they gossip. If your focus is on beating down others, so too will your employees step on, squash and otherwise undercut the competition - and that includes stealing the work of others.
Just like children, your employees are a reflection of you, their boss/parent. The entire culture of your company is a reflection of who you are as a leader. Let's hope you lead with integrity. Copy That?
Happy Mother's Day and have a wonderful Memorial Day weekend! Leslie Spoor, CCS President, Executive Errands
