Greetings!

Horror StoryAs a professional company who cares for other people's homes, we hear all kinds of horror stories related to homes left unattended during the summer, or about those who were in the care of neighbors, friends, or amateur absentee home service providers.

We've heard many accounts of homes that were emptied by burglars posing as moving companies, floods of all sizes, homes left unlocked, pest invasions, vandalism, pool and landscape neglect, golf ball damage and the like.

But this month, we heard a story so unbelievable; we simply have to share it with you.  With permission from the homeowner, the following is a true story.  Names have been changed to protect the innocent and the guilty.  Sometimes the gall of people is beyond comprehension.

The homeowner's story starts with a question:  Do you care for homes when homeowners are gone for the summer?  Yes, of course.  That question was followed by many others - most of which were typical, but each question was permeated by an undertone of worry.

Finally their story emerged:  There is a man, Mr. X, who lives in their small community and he works for the association.  His job is twofold:

1.  Manage all the community services and

2.  Perform absentee home checks during the summer

FreezerBecause this man was sanctioned by the association, our homeowners elected to hire him.  For a long time, everything mostly seemed ok - occasionally Mr. X asked if he could leave something in their home for a short time (boxes or knickknacks for example).  And while the homeowner didn't like Mr. X using their home for storage, they okayed the occasional use.

That is, until one year when the homeowners came back to the desert unannounced for a quick weekend.  They found their freezer full of food.  Not their food.  Mr. X's food.

When confronted, Mr. X said he had all this excess food and thought it would be ok to store it in the homeowner's freezer since they were gone and not using it.   Because their visit was unplanned and this was the first time the homeowners had arrived to find Mr. X's items actually in their home, it made them question other actions that now seemed suspicious.

On one occasion, Mr. X called saying he had inadvertently locked his keys inside the homeowner's place and he was frantic to get into the house.  He called on a Saturday evening and wanted the homeowner to take the keys to the airport and send them counter-to-counter so he could get them as soon as possible.  When the homeowner declined, saying the home would be ok until Tuesday when the keys arrived via an overnight carrier; Mr. X was more agitated than the situation warranted.

webcamAll this made the homeowners uncomfortable and the food in the freezer was the last straw.  But needing to leave again and at the mercy of Mr. X's services, they didn't say anything for fear he would do something destructive to their home.

They did, however, install a small and unobtrusive webcam in the kitchen.

On a whim one day, the homeowner flipped on the webcam.... In the kitchen, plain as day, was Mr. X and his partner (a noted chef from a large golf club), cooking.  They had started a catering business and were using the homeowner's kitchen for food preparation.  Now the homeowner understood why Mr. X was so anxious to get the keys - he probably had food left out on the counter, spoiling or perhaps he had a catering event in progress.  Whatever the reason, using the homeowner's kitchen was totally unacceptable.

Once again, concerned that Mr. X would take negative action if fully confronted, the homeowners installed a motion-activated closed circuit camera system throughout the home.   They told Mr. X only that it was for normal security purposes.  The cameras stopped the catering business cold.

RainHowever, that season there was an unusual amount of rain here in the desert causing the homeowner's roof to leak.  It leaked so much in fact, there was a large hole in the ceiling and water went everywhere.  When did the homeowners find out about the water damage?  Not until they returned for the winter months.

Mr. X allowed all that damage to fester and exacerbate for months until the homeowner returned.  Once here, the homeowner gasped and demanded "Why didn't you call us?"  Mr. X's response?  "I didn't want to bother you".

The homeowner believes the extent of the damage to his home was a direct retaliation for the installation of the closed circuit cameras.  Can he prove that? No.  Perhaps Mr. X is just inept, but he ended up costing this homeowner thousands and thousands of dollars in repairs.

LegitimateThe moral of this story:  Just because someone calls themselves a concierge service or just because they say they care for homes in your absence, does NOT make them a legitimate home caretaker.  Be sure to check references and insurance before hiring anyone to care for your home - whether it is for a weekend, a month, or a season.

[[Update: This homeowner is now our client, but Mr. X still lives in that community and despite other homeowners who have experienced similar problems with him, he still continues to work for the association.]]

Our Favorite Things...

Fit in 42

F42The desert is full of gyms, personal trainers, boot camps, and exercise classes - most of them perfectly fine and offering services as advertised.  However, we just participated in a Fit in 42 session and liked it so much we want to share it with you.

Fit in 42 is a combination boot camp and exercise class.  Each one hour session is made up of 60-90 second intervals of exercise.

Sometimes a session is aerobic.  Sometimes it is free weights.  Sometimes it is calisthenics.   Some days you're working out on machines.  Most of the time there is a combination of various activities with a focus on aerobic exertion.  It is fast.  It is intense.  It is fun.

It is impossible to get bored and with 60-90 second intervals, the hour flies by.  Personally, I've tried many exercise programs over the years and while different people respond to different activities, this one was by far the most fun and entertaining.  And the results are nearly immediate.

CrunchThe Fit in 42 program is a full service program that does just what it says.  Six weeks of intense training, personalized meal plans, a Trader Joe's shopping trip to teach you how to create cost effective menus, and personal trainers who truly care about your progress.

Even if you have health or physical restrictions, they are wonderful about altering the program so you get the most benefit while still protecting your body.

Fit in 42 is presented by Next Level Fitness and operates out of the Palm Desert Athletic Club on Alessandro St.

For more information, please contact Gerry Washack at 760.485.4468 or by email at Gerry@nextlevelfitness.org .  You may visit their website at www.nextlevelfitness.org or www.fitin42.com

The next Fit in 42 class starts May 9th, and if you mention you saw them here, in the Executive Errands newsletter, Gerry will extend you a $250 off discount.  Valid through April 30th for new clients only.

Want to get your strength, vigor and body back?  Try Fit in 42.... One of our favorite things!

Is Your Copier Violating Your Privacy?

CopierMost people don't realize it, but most copiers and multifunction units (copy/fax/print/scan) manufactured after 2002 have hard drives.  And these hard drives save a copy of every document you copy.  Or scan.  Or fax.  Or print.

Talk about a compromise of your digital security!  And if that copier is tied into a network, then it may be gathering fax settings, passwords and network data as well.

Most people have no idea about these hard drives so when they recycle a copier or exchange it (if it was leased), thousands and thousands AND THOUSANDS of personal data documents are sitting there, waiting for someone to access them and steal your identity or that of your clients.

Digital SecurityFor organizations governed by HIPAA, GLBA, or other information security regulations, copier hard drives represent a possible legal liability if they leave your office or facility (for example, at the end of a lease) without first being cleared of private data.

It's a scary situation.  If you'd like more information about copier hard drives and possible solutions to protecting your digital privacy, please email us.  We have a new article available about this very subject and we are happy to provide it to you at no charge.

Protect Your Home from the Heat...

SunEven though spring officially began March 21st, the last week has provided a summer preview including triple digit heat.  The sun does wicked damage to homes, patio furniture, outdoor kitchens, windows, roofs, plants and pools.  In fact, there isn't much the sun doesn't damage out here.

Before you leave for the summer, we'd like you to consider some protection for your outdoor areas.

We are now offering custom made patio furniture covers and outdoor kitchen covers.  Protect your barbecue, outdoor heaters, fine furniture, or your entire kitchen island.

Patio CoversThese covers are made onsite and same day.  They are made from the finest outdoor materials the market offers such as Sunbrella awning grade fabric, UV resistant thread and they are mold and mildew resistant.  These products withstand the toughest of climates -  like our desert heat.

The workmanship of these covers is backed up by a three year warranty and the Sunbrella fabric is backed by a five year warranty.

These covers come with a wide variety of securing mechanisms.  From drawstrings, to Velcro to zippers - your covers will be secure even in the windiest of areas.

outdoor kitchen coverAnd, as an added bonus, these patio furniture and outdoor kitchen covers color coordinate with our awnings too.  If you already have retractable awnings, or if you would like to install them, why not match them to your patio covers for a finished, complete look?

Awnings can help save on your electrical bills this summer as they shade your windows.

Solar ShadesAs an alternative to awnings, you might want to consider solar screens.  These beautiful shades can protect your windows and home from 90% to 95% of the sun's harmful rays yet still let you see outside.  What a wonderful way to save on electricity without compromising your view!

For more information or to request a referral for covers (patio furniture, outdoor kitchens, barbecues, etc), awnings or solar shades, please call us at 760.898.9604 or by email at info@executive-errands.com

Before You Leave for the Summer!

SummerIn addition to covering your outdoor furnishings and using awnings or solar screens to shield your home from the harsh rays of the sun and before you close up and leave for the summer, here are a few recommendations to help your home stay up to par while you're away.

1.  Have your AC serviced - you want to be sure the condensate line is clear (it's one major cause of home flooding), your filters are clean and your unit is functioning properly.

2.  Leave the thermostat at 85 degrees - your home needs humidity and buckets of water are ineffective. Plus you want the AC unit running often enough that people think someone is living in your home.

3.  Clean your windows - the sun can bake hard water deposits from sprinklers and dirt into the glass, etching it permanently.  Ideally, your windows should be cleaned quarterly, but at a minimum have it done before you leave for the summer, when you get back and after scalping.

checklist4.  Adjusting the hot water heater to 'vacation' or to 'low' is a personal preference

5.  Verify your pool man and gardener have adjusted timers for the longer and hotter days and don't forget the low voltage lights!

6.  Arrange to have a responsible and legitimate company check your property while you're away.  Weekly is preferred because even 7 days is a long time when something goes wrong.

7.  If you use a home check service, authorize them as the first call on your alarm system - that way a local person is immediately available.

homechecklogo8.  If you have a golf cart, be sure your home check service is checking water levels and running the cart monthly to help preserve battery life.

9.  Have your roof inspected. Check for loose tiles, gaps around vents, openings that rodents or other pests may access.

Executive Errands can facilitate or manage all of these items on your behalf.  We are the trusted source for absentee home care.

4)  Please use the 'Forward' button below when sharing this newsletter with friends and colleagues.  Last month we wrote about a company, someone liked it and sent it to that company's Corporate offices in St. Louis, which then sent it back to the local company! We had no idea until the local company contacted us to say 'thank you'.  We love that the newsletter gets shared with so many people, but we can't track that sharing unless you use the 'Forward' button.  Thank YOU for sharing!!

Rose colored glassesI never initially think the worst of anyone (you can eventually earn the right for me to think the worst of you, but it takes a lot).  Is that stupid or pollyana-ish?  Maybe.  But because my brain doesn't think of ways to get around 'the system' or to con someone or to take advantage of anyone, I am constantly surprised when other people do.

Mr. X in the main story above?  I would never, in my wildest dreams, ever think to utilize a client's home for anything.  Ever.  The fact he would so brazenly disrespect those homeowners boggles my mind.  That's the same as the people calling us every year to ask if we hire house sitters.  What they really want to do is 'house squat'.  They want to live somewhere nice for free over the summer.  Excuse me?  Really?   Um, no, I don't think so.

RespectOne year, early on in this business, I approached a realtor about giving her free gift certificates for our absentee home services so she could give them as a thank you to her second home buyers.  Her response?

She was worried that if she referred her clients to us, we wouldn't refer them back to her when they were ready to sell or worse, that I would become a realtor myself and take those clients away from her.  Holy Moly!   Has she never heard the phrase 'honor your sponsors'?  Again, it would never occur to me to do that to someone.  Not just realtors, but in any context.

As I write this section, I find myself sitting here shaking my head.  I am perplexed by people like the ones above.  It is so much easier to do a good job, be truthful, give someone the benefit of the doubt, be nice or friendly or simply give 100% to whatever it is you're doing.  And I guess it is ok I don't understand those people or don't ever think people would intentionally cheat someone, but wow, the surprises seem to be more and more frequent and that, my friends, is a sad trend indeed.

CompassWhat has this world come to anyway? What about integrity and hard work and a moral compass?  I know it's been a tough few years for a lot of people, but that doesn't excuse bad behavior.

On the positive side, I also know lots of people who started their own business in 2006 - for whatever reason, that was a big year for entrepreneurs - and we are all still growing.  Some are doing better than others, but we're still around and thriving and we didn't have to shortcut anything or anybody to get here.

In fact, when I really think about it, there are far more good people than bad ones, at least in my sphere of experience.  One thing I do know for absolute certain is that at the end of the day, all we have is our integrity.  It should be protected, preserved and cherished.

Have a wonderful April and Happy Easter!
