Greetings!
Can you survive without electricity? For me, the answer is 'not very well'. During the heavy rains this past month, my home lost power at 5 am one wet morning and it didn't come back on until 4 pm. Eleven hours with no electricity on a dark and overcast day is a very long time when you're ill-prepared.
My laptop, bless its little harddrive heart, lasted 4 hours, but it didn't much matter because there was no internet access. My phones, both cordless, didn't work. There was no heat, no lights, no TV, no stove, nothing. Thank goodness for my cell phone - my only link to civilization.
And, as embarrassing as this is to admit, not only were the batteries in my flashlight dead, but I couldn't initially locate the release lever for the garage door because it wasn't where I expected it to be (and trying to find it in the dark was a challenge). As my faithful readers know, I just moved into this home in November and had no idea where the circuit breaker panel was or, for that matter, the utility meters. Worse, it never even crossed my mind to find out until the power went out.
So, as I sat looking around at my inoperable home, I thought: "what if this had been an earthquake?" We tend to get complacent about the fact the ground moves here, even though the recent tragedy in Haiti should be a stark reminder. True, we have better building codes than Haiti but our homes are built on sand too and liquefaction is a real and true potential for extreme damage.
As someone who lived within 10 miles of the epicenter of the 1994 Northridge earthquake, I can tell you that even here, where we're fairly well built and most construction is single story, factors like magnitude, depth, duration and seismic path can level even the sturdiest structures.
So despite my previous experience, I was unprepared to be without electricity for even a day, much less the week or more you can endure during a serious disaster. We're all familiar with the guidelines for keeping water and non-perishable foodstuffs and having an emergency preparedness plan, but here is a common sense checklist just in case you're like me and need a reminder about the little things: 1) Keep batteries on hand and at least one flashlight working and close by. My son-in-law keeps one tucked between the mattress and box spring on his side of the bed so he always knows exactly where it is. You may even want to invest in a solar flashlight so batteries aren't an issue.
2) Make sure everyone in your family knows where the emergency shut off items are and how to work them. This includes the location of the circuit breaker panel, how to recognize a tripped breaker and how to reset it. And don't forget the garage door release lever - the security guard at our community had quite a number of requests to help get garage doors open the day the electricity went off so as intuitive as it seems, make sure everyone knows about it.
3) Keep candles, matches, and a battery operated radio in an easily accessible (and easily remembered) place. The radio is paramount. During the Northridge quake we had no idea what was happening around us until almost a week after the quake and, trust me, it is an isolated and scary feeling when you have no information.
4) Keep a list of emergency numbers handy, including your utility companies - I rely on the internet phone directory and thus have no phone books in my home. And while my cell phone has email and internet access, in the event of a catastrophe none of that may work.
My loss of electricity wasn't a major disaster. Heck, it wasn't even a minor disaster, but it served as a reminder that we are all dependent on the automation of our surroundings.
Take a moment to consider the way you live and work. What do you use most? What is your backup plan when services are interrupted? A little forethought can go a long way toward minimizing the aggravation associated with minor hiccups and may be vital during a major tragedy.

Our Favorite Things
911-only Cell Phones
Did you know that you don't have to pay for cellular service in order to call 911 from a cellular phone? It's true. Your carrier may not admit to it, but since 1997 the FCC mandates that unactivated cell phones without a monthly service contract must be allowed to make emergency 911 calls.
If you have elderly or very young people around who can't manage a full service cell phone, AA Communications markets an affordable cell phone for 911-only calls. These phones require no monthly contracts and there is no cost for the 911 call. This is the perfect solution for someone who can't afford monthly service or doesn't want a cell phone, but who does want to be prepared in the event of an emergency.
And if you have community swimming pools, AA Communications offers a 911-only cell phone system specifically designed for swimming pool areas. Water proof and with a long life battery, you can have an emergency call system with no monthly contract fees, no charges, and without the cost of expensive land lines. It might be worth checking to see if your insurance carrier offers discounts that would offset the nominal cost of this important safety feature.
Emergency cell phones - one of our favorite things!
["Our Favorite Things" gives us an opportunity to share people, places, events and things that we truly love and that you might too. We just want to share good things with you and if our recommendations help build business for someone else or saves you time or money, GREAT!!!]

Absentee Home Checks
More Than Water Management
One of Executive Errands' primary tasks is performing absentee home checks. Many of the homes here in the Desert are second and third residences and may be empty for months at a time therefore having someone check weekly is a must.
However, absentee home check services are often misunderstood. Yes, we do weekly water management (flushing toilets and running faucets) but more than that, we help keep activity in your home, monitor your other services (pool and landscape maintenance for example), and perform a myriad of other checks and tasks intended to help keep your home maintained and ready for your arrival.
In addition to the weekly checks, we are often the 'first call people' for security alarm systems and are your single point of contact in the event of an emergency. When there is excessive wind, torrential rain or seismic activity, we are here to check on your home and to coordinate emergency services on your behalf or until you can get here.
While we can't prevent emergencies, we can certainly identify them at the earliest opportunity which may help keep any costs associated with problems to a minimum.
Knowing you have a local person dedicated to your home and performing regular weekly checks can give you peace of mind.

New and Expanded Services
No one will deny the pets in our lives are important members of our family. Executive Errands has always offered pet sitting and pet walking services, but we've added a new and improved Service Provider who does both of those and so much more.
If your pet would enjoy a play date or if you just need a few hours of day care, your pet may be dropped off to enjoy that time in friendly day care locations all around the Desert.
If you have exotic pets (birds - especially parrots - rodents and reptiles), our new Service Provider has specialists for them too.
For regular customers of the pet service, there is a safety policy wherein your pets are checked in the event of an emergency. So if you work away from home for long periods of the day or week and there is an emergency, you can rest assured someone else has the safe care of your pets in mind.
In addition to pet sitting, day care and pet taxi, our new Service Provider also offers private cage-free pet boarding, pet care at your hotel, yard cleanup, dog bathing and they can administer medications.
There are several good pet care services in the Desert, but finding one with the appropriate license and insurance specific for pet care is a challenge. Executive Errands is very happy to have added a company to our network who not only meets those requirements, but who also has an excellent reputation for quality pet care.

Safety First - Products & Services
We here at Executive Errands are safety conscious and our Service Providers are too. We offer several products and services intended to help keep your home safe.
One of these products is seismic gas shutoff valves that attach to your gas meter and are designed to automatically shut off the gas if the ground moves over a predetermined magnitude. Should the valve be tripped accidentally, they are easily reset with a simple screwdriver.
Also available is a water shut off switch that is installed inside the home (usually in the kitchen or laundry room). This switch has a 90 second opening and closing feature which prevents the force of the water from damaging your plumbing connections when the water is turned on. We love this switch because when it is in the 'off' position, there is virtually no chance of flooding from inside your home. We flip it on when we arrive to do absentee home checks and turn it off when we leave. Simple, Easy, Effective.
And we have a Service Provider who offers earthquake assessments to help you decide which items in your home need to be secured to prevent movement and potential loss during an earthquake. Using both tethers and gel, all of your valuables and heavy items can be safely secured. As anyone who's been through an earthquake can attest, most loss and injuries result from falling items and projectiles. Don't risk incurring an injury or losing treasured items. Call to schedule your assessment today!
And please remember - referrals to our Service Providers are free. No matter what you need, Executive Errands is here to help.

Preventative Maintenance
Keeping your home and family safe isn't just about natural disasters. It is equally important to keep your home properly maintained. We're all guilty of procrastinating nuisance tasks but especially here in the Desert where the weather can be harsh, we should follow a preventative maintenance schedule for our homes. Preventative Maintenance includes the following:
Garage door inspections - are your springs in good working order? Are the sensors properly aligned? Are the belt and bearings properly lubricated?
AC and Heater checks - do you change your filters regularly? Is your condensate line running free? Are you sure there are no leaks in Freon lines, loose fittings or improperly seated duct work?
Skylights - when was the last time you had your skylight inspected? The glass seal can fail and yet it could be several seasons before the skylight leaks. Do you notice discoloration around the skylight or in the glass? Bubbling? Cracks? It may be time to have your skylight inspected
Roof Inspection - how old is your roof? Even small leaks need to be corrected because mold can be hazardous to your health. Don't see drips? Look for soft spots or bulges in the drywall. They may be roof leak indicators.
Chimney and Fireplace cleaning - creosote, the black oily substance that coats the inside of your chimney in wood burning fireplaces, is a fire hazard and can build up quicker than you might think. Have your chimney and fireplace professionally checked and cleaned
Drainage is another problem that doesn't surface (pun unintentionally intended) until the rains come. Most of our homes have minimal gutter systems, if any. Water running off your roof can disturb the soil along the perimeter of your home. Between the wind blowing pea gravel away and soil settlement, you might find the drainage around your home inadequate. Our landscapers can assess and resolve your drainage concerns.
Spring cleaning - excess clutter is a fire hazard and can invite pests into your home and garage. If the mere thought of sorting through clutter makes your heart race,Executive Errands can help clean out your garage, closets or drawers. We can be the catalyst you need to get organized, arrange for charity donations/pickup, assist with filing or any number of tasks that help un-clutter your home and your life.
