Greetings!

My 11 year old grandson and I recently went to the sd nat history museumNatural History museum in Balboa Park (San Diego) and saw the most wondrous exhibit - Body Worlds (www.sdnhm.org).  It's an original exhibition of real human bodies that have been 'plasticized' so they remain intact.

All the skin is removed so you can see the muscles, bones, tendons and the organs.  Some are dissected and some are posed into everyday activities - ballet, skateboarding, the baseball player - so you can see how the body accommodates those strenuous activities.

It's a truly amazing spectacle and at first I felt like Alice in Wonderland after she went through the Looking Glass: a voyeur in a very strange landbw1 Most of us know what our insides look like, more or less, but there was something unnerving and yet magical in seeing so many bodies dissected and displayed in one location.

At first I found myself wondering about these people's lives - what they did for a living, did they have a happy life, were they young or old when they passed away and marveling at how generous it was to donate their remains for such a unique scientific project.

Then, as we walked through the exhibit, and as we began to fully appreciate the sheer miracle of lookingglasshow our body parts work together, it occurred to me: the media has us so focused on our outward appearance, we often forget that it's what we carry internally that forms the foundation of our well-being and without that solid foundation, nothing we do topically or surgically to our skin or face matters nearly as much as the care we give to our insides.

The phrase 'beauty is only skin deep' never rang truer.

We are all guilty of being caught up in the superficiality of appearance and have at least some dependence on visual chemistry.  But what was so obvious in this exhibit is that who we truly are, our personalities and our quirkiness and all the traits that make us individual is not, in any way, tied to our bodies.

No matter what your religious or spiritual beliefs (and with immense respect to all of them), the essence ofbw who we are lies not in our physical being but somewhere else.

None of the bodies on exhibit could speak or laugh or write a love letter or bake cookies.  They are just the empty vessel that used to house a living person.  It matters not what someone initially looks like; for how many times have you met someone you at first found unattractive, only to befriend them and eventually see them for who they really are and then found them beautiful?

So the next time you gaze critically into your own looking glass, remember to care for your internal self, find your own balance, and love yourself for the individual you are.  And if you get a chance to visit the Body Worlds exhibit, remember, as my grandson says, it is 'gross' - the highest compliment an 11 year old bestows.

Let The Sun Shine In

Shakespeare once said 'Eyes are the windows to the Soul'.  If that is true then windows are the eyes to your home and caring for them should be a priority.

bay windowHave you ever noticed how, right after your windows are cleaned, your home seems brighter? Happier? It's true.  Letting the sun shine in unencumbered by dirt, sand and bird deposits simply makes you feel good.

And while you're cleaning your windows, have you checked your blinds and shutters lately?  We can certainly replace them, but perhaps it would be easier and more cost effective to repair broken slats and loose shutter panels.  Or maybe they just need a thorough cleaning.

Don't forget your shower doors either.  Thoseshower door clear glass panels are gorgeous but can sometimes be the source of many an argument when family members forget to squeegee.

Executive Errands offers a treatment for glass and granite that helps water sheet away, preventing hard water deposits and leaving the surfaces sparkling like new.  Just say no - no more squeegee's that is!  Call Executive Errands today to find out how you can let the sun shine into your home and brighten your day!

Our Favorite Things

gaslamp segway

Have you been looking for something different and fun to do this summer?  Would you like to escape the summer heat?

Before our trip to the museum, my grandson and I, at the suggestion of a dear friend, took a two-hour Segway tour and it was absolutely one of the most fun things we have ever done!

Segway's are controlled by the motion of your body and can reach speeds up to 12 mph.  There is no better way to tour San Diego.  In that two hours, we saw Petco Stadium, the Martin Luther King memorial park, the Midway, the Star of India, a WWII memorial, the Gaslamp District and several othersegway san diego landmarks.

Easy to ride, the Segway is one of the best modes of transportation ever invented.  There is no stress or strain on your body and the only regret we had is that our tour was only two hours.  We definitely could have ridden longer.

There are three Segway tour companies in San Diego.  The one we chose, Gaslamp Segway, has knowledgeable and friendly guides and several tour options.  We highly recommend them.

["Our Favorite Things" gives us an opportunity to share people, places, events and things that we truly love and that you might too.  We have no business affiliation with any company or individual featured here.  We just want to share good things with you and if our recommendations help build business for someone else or saves you time or money, GREAT!!!]
Social Economics

Socioeconomics is the study of the relationship between economic activity and social life

So, just for fun, we are adding a special Summer series called "Products, Technology and Services that Reflect the Changes in Our Lives" - This month our focus is on Products and these are our Top 5 selections (in no priority sequence):

1)  Bottled Water - It is rare these days to find abottled water water fountain, but even if one exists, we still prefer to grab a bottle of water to go.  Even at home many people prefer bottled water over tap.  Somehow it seems easier to pull a bottle out of the fridge than filling a glass.  It's simple, pure, fresh and already cold

2)  Specialty Coffee - Aaahh the aroma of fresh brewed coffee!  Too bad we don't make it at home coffeewhere it could fill the air with it's bittersweet fumes.  Most of us grab coffee from a drive thru window.  Not only is specialty coffee quick and convenient, but every cup tastes good and we don't have to clean the coffee pot or throw out the grounds

3) Microwave Ovens - Zap It - the microwave makes cooking everything from hotdogs to Thanksgiving dinner a snap!  My first microwave, bought in mw oven1979, weighed about 50 lbs, was awkward in it's girth and cost $600.  Now you can carry them easily and pay a mere $60.  For most people, microwave ovens aren't used to cook a lot of meals, but they are the handiest and quickest way to heat up leftovers and pop a bag of corn and all with very few dirty dishes or cleanup time required

4)  Digital Video Recorder (DVR) - Finally, we are no longer a slave to the TV, nor do we have to sit dvrthrough an endless parade of commercials (except for Super Bowl, which no one wants to miss anyway).  The DVR has made it possible to catch your favorite TV shows and yet still have a life because you can watch them on your own time, not Primetime

5)  Fast Food - From TV dinners to Drive Thrus to prepackaged, prepared meals at the neighborhood grocer, making breakfast, lunch and dinner takes no time at all.fast food  Unfortunately if you don't make it yourself, you don't know what's in it and therefore it is probably not good for you, but no one can argue with the convenience.

Do you see a common thread?  Time, or lack thereof, has played a major role in changing the way we live and the products we buy.  Americans work harder and have less discretionary time than just about any other Nation in the World.

Time is rapidly becoming the new sought-after commodity, with its value rising in contrast to our lack of it.  If you, or someone you know could use more time, let Executive Errands help simplify your life.  We're your full service company 760.469.2487 www.executive-errands.com

reflectionMirror Mirror on the wall.... a famous line from an equally famous movie.  It seems that our lives are full of reflection.

Gandhi once said "The outward freedom that we shall attain will only be in exact proportion to the inward freedom to which we may have grown at a given moment. And if this is a correct view of freedom, our chief energy must be concentrated on achieving reform from within."

Perhaps each day we should reflect on who we are and how we can grow as a better person.  We should cherish and preserve our happy memories so that we may savor and pass them along to those who come after us.

We should strive to live in the moment and value the time we have for family and friends, our community and our faith.  And we should endeavor to remember that it is who we are on the inside that matters most because when you strip away our skin, physically we are all the same.
